Blackberry Tour 101

Research In Motion's BlackBerry Tour 9630, as of 2011, is the most recent version of the Tour line of smart phone and was released in July 2009. Features such as a 3.2-megapixel camera, GPS and Bluetooth connectivity have earned the device positive reviews from CNET, an electronics review website. After purchasing the Tour, you'll need to take a few steps to enable the phone to work as it was intended.

Inserting the Battery

Now that you've purchased the BlackBerry Tour 9630, you first need to provide it with power. Remove the battery cover by pressing the cover release button on the back of the phone. Making sure the battery aligns with the phone's connectors, insert the battery and replace the battery cover. If the battery is charged, the phone powers up and displays a dialog box to confirm the date and time. Incorrect time and date information can be changed by clicking "Edit," setting the correct information and clicking "OK." If the battery is not charged, connect the phone to a wall outlet using the battery charger.

Connecting to the Network

After the Tour is powered up, you need to connect to your service provider's wireless network. Assuming you have purchased a wireless data plan with a wireless provider, this can be done by clicking "Manage Connections" from the phone's home screen and then by selecting the "Mobile Network" check box. If you are within your provider's coverage area, you are able to connect wirelessly to the provider's network. If you are not within the coverage area or are in a poor reception area, you can still use the phone's applications that do not require network connection.

Setting Up Email

Your BlackBerry Tour 9630 is equipped to handle up to 10 email accounts, which you can set up either directly on the phone or from a computer.

To set up email from a computer, you need to contact your provider for specific instructions.

To do it from the phone, click "Setup Wizard" on the home screen and then "Email Setup." On the next screen, select the "I Want to Create or Add an Email Address" option, then click "Next" and then "Next" again on the following screen to open the email setup website. If you agree to the terms and conditions, click "I Agree." Choose your email service provider on the following screen, enter the email address information, click "Next" and then "OK." If you want to establish an email account on the phone, click "Create," complete the desired email address and password information, provide or choose a security question, answer the question, then click "Next" and "OK." Click "Close" to log out of the email setup website.
