Prepare For A Med School Interview

Prepare for a Med School Interview. So, you've taken the MCAT, you've submitted your application, and now you have an interview, CONGRATULATIONS! Many students don't make it this far. Now, all you have to do is nail the interview! Following these steps before your interview will help you relieve a lot of the anxiety that comes with an interview and help you perform well at the interview!

Instructions

1. Make travel arrangements ASAP

You don't want to stay in Shady Bob's Motel by the Hour, but you don't have to break the bank to stay at the Marriot for a night. Find a place you think you will be comfortable sleeping at, you don't want to have more excuses not to get a good night's sleep the night before!.

2. Your appearance

This is definitely something you want to take a little time on. You should appear professional and prepared! Go out and buy (if you don't already have) a nice suit. Be conservative, this isn't the time to flaunt your assets (except academically!). I wore a black skirt suit with a white blouse to my interviews. For the ladies, if you are opting for a skirt suit, be sure you can walk easily and go up/down stairs! It should not have a high slit and should be at least knee length. Avoid wearing flashy jewelry. Do not wear an engagement or wedding ring (no rings, preferably). Stay classy and simple: a pearl necklace. For shoes, wear something you can walk in! You will more than likely have a tour of the campus and that requires a lot of walking! Do not wear open toed shoes. Wear simple makeup! Remember you will probably be under harsh fluorescent lighting!

3. What to bring

You should purchase a leather bound notebook that holds business cards, blank paper, your resume (on resume paper) and references, and a pen.

4. Look at the medical school's website

Read up on the research being done at the school, the school's mission/philosophy. You want to be familiar with this information for your interview!

5. Plan questions you are going to ask your interviewers. You can write these down in the paper in your leather bound notebook.

6. Interview prep

Think about questions that you will likely be asked during your interview such as: What are you strengths and weaknesses, What would you bring to our class, Why should we accept you, Where do you see yourself in 10 years, What drew you to medicine, If you could change one thing about your past, what would it be, etc. Do mock interviews with your friends or a parent. Visit studentdoctor.net interview feedback forum to see what students that have interviewed where you are going to interview have said. Think about personal stories that demonstrate your qualities!

7. Brush up on current events.

Read the news, and have an opinion. A very popular medical school interview question right now is about healthcare reform. Know the facts, what changes are being suggested, and have an opinion about it! Think about what you would do differently!

8. The night before

Don't stress out. Think about your answers to anticipated questions. You've prepared for this interview for a long time, so you should be ready! Be sure to smile and thank the interviewers for their time!

9. After the interview

Write the interviewers thank you letters and put them in the mail ASAP!
