Transition A Child To A New School

If you have recently moved or your child is moving up into a new grade, you may have to deal with transitioning. A transition to a new school can be hard on both of you, but here's some things that you can do to help your child during the process.

Instructions

1. Get all paperwork together that you'll need for your child's new school. This will most likely include a birth certificate, a report card, medical and immunization records and proof of your new address (if you moved to a new home). Check with the school to see what paperwork is required.

2. Remain positive about your child's new school. If your child sees you as being apprehensive or worried, it may rub off on him. Stay upbeat and remind your child about all of the wonderful things about the new school and making new friends.

3. Acknowledge any feelings that your child has about transitioning to a new school. She may be nervous or scared, so don't ignore these insecurities. Let your child know that she can talk to you about anything at anytime.

4. Have your child meet other children that attend the new school. If you have moved to a new school district, it may be a good idea for your child to meet and befriend some local children before school starts. This way, your child will have a buddy for that very first day at their new school.

5. Visit your child's new school. You and your child can meet her teacher, go and meet the school principal, find her classroom and locker, the cafeteria, the bathrooms and the library. This will help her feel more comfortable in an unfamiliar environment.

6. Suggest that your child get involved at their new school. Participating in sports or school clubs can help your child feel as if he is part of the new school. It can also help him find friends who have similar interests.

7. Keep routines at home as constant as possible. When your child is transitioning to a new school, changes at home can be too much pressure.
