University of Illinois
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of three campuses that make up the University of Illinois. Founded in 1867, the school offers a broadcast journalism bachelor's degree program that covers a sequence of classes that includes multimedia, radio and television reporting. Within this degree program, students can choose elective courses that provide instruction in sports broadcasting. The school also offers several closely related degree programs, including advertising, journalism, media studies and cinema studies.
University of North Texas
Located in Denton, Texas, the University of North Texas offers a major in radio, television and film that includes several focuses, including broadcast journalism. This discipline requires students to complete courses that specifically cover perspectives related to radio, television and converged media production, including sports broadcasting. Students learn from faculty members who are recognized scholars and experienced media members. This program gives students access to media and broadcast working professionals through several organizations, including the Broadcast Education Association, the Texas Association of Broadcasters and the University Film and Video Association.
Hofstra University
Hofstra University is located in Hempstead, New York, and offers several media-related degree programs, including television and radio production. The school's broadcasting programs help students think critically, communicate effectively and produce high-quality multimedia works. Further, sports broadcasting students will receive training and instruction that will enable them to effectively pursue careers in several media capacities, including producers, writers, directors and distributors. Hofstra's Department of Radio, Television, Film is staffed by award-winning and experienced faculty members and is one of the school's fastest-growing educational departments.
Webster University
Located in St. Louis, Missouri, Webster University was founded in 1915 and, as of 2011, offers several media and broadcasting undergraduate degree programs, including journalism, media communications and broadcast and digital journalism. Within the broadcast and digital journalism degree program is a course that provides instruction on sports broadcasting. Specifically, the course covers the style, strategies and techniques of play-by-play announcing and color commentary. Students in this course will cover analysis as to how sports is dramatic, entertaining and journalistic.
Other Schools
Several other colleges throughout the U.S. are known for providing broadcast journalism instruction and degree programs, including the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, Columbia College in Chicago and Howard University in Washington, D.C. Each of the schools combine journalistic and broadcast instruction with applications in the sports broadcasting field.
