What Type Of Mba Is Best For Consulting

An MBA in a specialized field can lead to a rewarding business consulting career.

The MBA (or Master of Business Administration) degree has become a popular option for those in the business world seeking a higher, specialized education. Students can concentrate on an individual field of their choice while attaining highly sought-after training in the world of business. In a sense, many of the career fields that follow an MBA involve a fair amount of consulting, but some may be better prepared than others.

MBA in Entrepreneurial Management

More so than some of the other degree designations, the MBA in entrepreneurial management offers students the opportunity to study the inner-workings and managing or consulting techniques involved with a small business. Experienced business owners or management often study entrepreneurial management and return seamlessly to their roles as CEOs, CFOs or other upper management. The degree typically focuses on finance and strategic management, with a built-in consulting component for those not directly involved in their own business.

MBA in Accounting

The accounting specialization directly prepares students for basic bookkeeping, treasury, corporate finance and consumer consulting work. Because those with accounting degrees usually spend much of their career doing work for large corporations, the field is particularly apt for those interested in consulting. In "Top MBA Programs," David Petersam notes that, "Top level corporations are currently on the lookout for graduates with corporate accounting and CPA (Certified Public Accountant) qualifications," as are government and military groups.

MBA in Marketing

For those interested in advertising and commercial consulting, the MBA in marketing supplies students with the ability to function in an ever-changing commercial world. Graduates of this program go on to consult in corporate advertising for world-class marketing firms or directly as part of an inhouse corporate marketing team. Marketing students work in both the creative and business aspects of the corporate world, depending on their experience and background. A marketing focus often leads to a lucrative career in corporate advertising.

MBA in Health Care Management

One of the largest and constantly growing sectors of the financial world is health care. Whether students work directly for insurance companies, HMOs, the government or a health services/products corporation, graduates within health care management are sure to have job security for years to come. Consulting opportunities abound for those with an MBA, particularly in the private field of health care consulting to corporations or the government. Most programs are tailored to either work in specified research-related or consulting fields.
