Legal Aptitude Questions

Legal aptitude questions test your ability to excel in legal programs.


The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a test that was first administered in 2008, and it used to determine admission to 11 National Law Universities in India. It uses what are called "legal aptitude questions," to test the ability to study law. It is used for both admission to undergraduate legal programs and postgraduate legal programs.


Undergraduate Test Format








Undergraduate law candidates take a 200-question test.








The two-hour test is composed of 200 questions that are each weighed equally in scoring. The test is comprised of the following subjects: English with 40 questions, General Knowledge/Current Affairs with 50 questions, Elementary Mathematics with 20 questions, Legal Aptitude/Legal Awareness with 45 questions, and Logical Reasoning with 45 questions.


Postgraduate Test Format


The postgraduate test has several types of questions.


The two-hour test has 200 marks or points, but questions are weighted depending on type. The objective questions total 50 and they are worth one mark each, the short answer questions total 10 and they are worth five marks each, and the two essays are each worth 50 marks. The test subjects are contracts, torts, criminal law, constitutional law and legal theory.


Legal Aptitude Questions


A legal aptitude question may ask about legal arrest.


The legal aptitude questions test knowledge of legal principles, case law, statutes and constitutions. Some questions require that you reason by applying legal principles. Typical questions ask about legal arrest, sovereign immunity, judicial process, legislative process and executive power. Below are a few sample questions.

Preparing For the CLAT


Some students purchase books to prepare for the CLAT.


Commercial courses are available to prepare you for the CLAT. Some students purchase books and study on their own. Memorizing valuable information is crucial as so much of what is tested is factual in nature.
