Have A Good Year In Middle School

Moving from elementary to middle school is one of the most difficult transitions that a student goes through during his educational experience. Some students struggle to adapt to the new environment and people, while many students thrive in the new setting. Parents and students should be aware that the transition to middle school prepares them for success during the current school year and future school years to come.

Instructions

1. Learn teacher pleasing behaviors. Positive behaviors, such as being responsible, showing respect and giving effort, make it easier for a teacher or administrator to help and assist when trouble or problems arise. Gaining the teachers and administrators as allies through consistently demonstrating respect and responsibility is the most important step a student takes.

2. Create a positive social network of friends. Many students struggle to make and retain friends during the middle school years. Work to keep friends and maintain strong relationships by being positive and helpful, especially when difficult times arise.

3. Join an athletic team or other extracurricular activity or organization to make the school year fun. During the middle school years, students have many different activity choices. Schools design these activities specifically for the students to discover new interests or build upon previous interests. Also, these activities are a great way to spend time with or meet new friends.

4. Maintain a strong sense of self. Middle school is a formative age for students. Middle school students need to feel comfortable in their own skin and stand up for what they believe in. Conversely, this is a time for students to challenge what they already know and ask questions to those around them to help shape their maturation process.

5. Study and prepare hard for a future career path. Middle school students need to explore various career choices through observation, study and experience. Find a role model and a career or occupation to job shadow for better learning opportunities. By understanding the multitude of options that lie ahead of them, students set themselves up for success in middle school and beyond.
