Scholarships For Black High School Students Interested In Engineering

African American engineering students can find money to help pay their college tuition.

As the numbers of African American engineers increase, the numbers of patents and products that African Americans create and own can also increase. This leads to economic health and scientific productivity. Money is available to help high school students who are interested in majoring in engineering earn an undergraduate degree. Some scholarships will also help eligible students pay for their graduate degree at an accredited college or university.

National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering Scholarships

African American, Latino and Native American high school seniors who perform at high levels academically while they are in high school and who exhibit leadership qualities are eligible to receive a National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering scholarship. These students must also demonstrate a commitment to working in the engineering or science fields when they graduate from an accredited college or university. As of 2011, scholarship recipients received $1,500 a year to use toward their tuition.

National Society of Black Engineers Scholarships

Members of the National Society of Black Engineers are eligible to receive one of the organization's annual scholarships. Monies for the scholarships come from donations received from foundations and businesses like ExxonMobile, Rockwell and Oracle. Students are required to earn at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) in high school to qualify for the scholarships. They must major in engineering and demonstrate a desire to work in the field after they graduate. As of 2011, scholarships ranged from $500 to $5,000 for each award recipient. The maximum number of scholarships a student can receive in a single year is two.

Xerox Technology Minority Scholarship

Students must enroll in a technical major (e.g. engineering) to receive a Xerox Technology Minority Scholarship. As of 2011, scholarships were distributed in amounts that ranged from $1,000 to $10,000 per student. The student's name, street address, GPA, major, amounts of other scholarships they received and their expected graduation date is required on the scholarship application. A cover letter and a resume must accompany the student's scholarship application. Scholarship monies cover the cost of tuition, books and fees.

Kodak Engineering Excellence Program Scholarship

African American students who attend North Carolina AT&T State University, an accredited historically black college or university (HBCU), and who are in their junior year and majoring in engineering or computer science are eligible to receive a Kodak Engineering Excellence Program Scholarship. The maximum amount of the scholarship is $9,000 per student as of 2011. The scholarship is funded by the Eastman Kodak Company and awarded through the United Negro College Fund.
