Get Clearance From Selective Service

The Selective Service provides a way to draft men in times of emergency for the Department of Defense.

Most men living in the U.S. are required to register with the Selective Service by the time they turn 18 years old. This applies even to non-citizens living in the U.S. as legal aliens, illegal aliens and refugees. Male applicants for federal financial aid, federal jobs and federal training programs must be registered with the Selective Service to be eligible for these opportunities. Additionally, security clearance with federal agencies requires verification of Selective Service registration. Registered individuals and third parties have several options for verifying registration that make the process simple.

Instructions

1. Show your Selective Service registration card. Men who register by mail receive this proof of registration in the mail 30 to 90 days after registering. Men who register using the Selective Service's online registration webpage receive the card in 2 to 3 weeks by mail.

2. Check Selective Service registration online at www.sss.gov. This form of verification is conveniently accessible and requires the last name, social security number and date of birth of the person being looked up. This system only works for men born beginning Jan. 1, 1960.

3. Call the Selective Service System at (847) 688-6888. Prompts direct callers through the automated verification system. The caller must know the social security number and date of birth of the person they are verifying.

4. Request verification by mail. This form of verification is protected by the Privacy Act and requires the registrant himself to make the request or requires written permission from the registrant for the third party to make the request. Requests for verification by mail should be mailed to:
