Oakland, California, located on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay, is the state's eighth-largest city and hosts two community colleges, both of which are part of the four-school Peralta Community College system. A third community college is located in the nearby small city of Emeryville, with a second campus south of Oakland, in San Leandro. Other nearby communities in the East Bay region of California are home to two more community colleges in the Peralta system: Alameda (College of Alameda) and Berkeley (Berkeley City College).
Laney Community College
Laney Community College is the larger of the two Oakland-area community colleges belonging to the Peralta Community College system, enrolling about 13,000 students, and is located in the heart of downtown Oakland. Laney offers 44 associate degree programs and 28 professional certificate programs, including coursework in welding technology, Latin American studies, Environmental Control Technology, Cosmetology, Carpentry, Culinary Arts, and a wide range of arts, humanities, and science classes.

Merritt College
Merritt College, which also belongs to the Peralta Community College system, is located in the Oakland hills. It has about 7,000 students and offers vocational and technical programs in two divisions. The first division, Humanities and Social Science, also encompasses classes in physical education, legal administration and human development. The second divison, Business, Math and Sciences, also includes programs in real estate, landscape horticulture, medical assistant training and nutrition.

Western Career College
Western Career College is technically in Emeryville, just across the city line from Oakland. It offers a number of associate degree programs in medical , legal, and technical disciplines, including dental and veterinary programs, registered and vocational nursing, respiratory therapy and massage therapy. There is a second campus south of Oakland in the city of San Leandro as well.
