Most Expensive Colleges In Arkansas

College costs


Arkansas has 23 colleges and universities that offer four-year degree programs. All but one of the five most expensive schools are small and private, so they do not receive state funding. Cost estimates are for the 2009-2010 school year and are based on a two semester, nine-month school year, taking 15 credit hours per term. It includes tuition, fees, room and board, books and supplies. All five of the most expensive schools offer their students financial assistance.


Hendrix College


Hendrix is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It requires an ACT score of 27 and specializes in educating students who will go into professional fields requiring advanced degrees. Located in Conway, the college has 1,463 students and more than 95 percent of the faculty hold doctorates or equivalent degrees. Hendrix offers undergraduate degree programs in 31 majors and master's degree programs in finance and business. All students receive some financial aid, averaging $21,604 per year per student. The cost to attend Hendrix is $37,936, not including books.

The Fayetteville campus has 18,648 students and grants undergraduate degrees in 200 fields of study. A minimum ACT score of 20 and a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale are required for admission. About 70 percent of students receive some type of financial aid. U.S. News and World Report ranks the undergraduate program 24th best among public colleges and universities. Kiplinger Financial lists it in the top 100 U.S. schools for value based on educational cost. The cost is $27,340 for non-residents and $18,462 for residents.

John Brown University


John Brown University, a private Christian liberal arts college located in Siloam Springs, has 2,000 students. It specializes in digital media and photo graphics but there are 47 undergraduate degree majors and 13 master's programs. The University requires an ACT of 26 and accepts 62 percent of applicants. About 95 percent of students receive financial aid. The cost to attend John Brown is $26,916.

Lyon College


A good place to study.


Lyon is a liberal arts college in Batesville affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). It has an enrollment of 500 and specializes in educating students who will later earn advanced degrees in professional fields. The base ACT required for admission is 27. More than 90 percent of the faculty hold doctorates or equivalent degrees. Undergraduate degree programs are offered in 19 majors plus nine pre-professional track programs. U.S. News and World Report ranked it fifth among the nation's liberal arts colleges for value received in educational quality. Lyon College's cost is $25,404.

Harding University


Harding University is a private Christian university, with primary financial support from the churches of Christ. This multidisciplinary institution has an enrollment of 6,100 students. The main campus is in Searcy but there are satellites in Bentonville, North Little Rock, Memphis and seven foreign countries. Undergraduate degree programs in 86 majors are offered and 12 pre-professional, seven master's and two doctoral degree programs. The cost is $23,194.
