Online learning has become more popular in recent years. Online learning provides a convenient option for traditional and nontraditional learners alike, but it can also present unique challenges that are different from those found in a traditional classroom.
Time Management
In an online classroom, a student has to manage his own time. In a traditional classroom, there is a specific schedule to follow for class time, instruction and assignment completion. In an online classroom, a student must make the time to finish his work.
Technological Savvy
In a traditional classroom, when students use technology, they have a teacher present to assist them in learning that technology. In an online classroom, a student must be able to use her computer to send emails, participate in discussion board forums, upload documents and participate in live chat sessions.
Instructional Assistance
In a traditional classroom, students meet with the instructor in person for regular class sessions. In an online classroom, instructors can help students via phone calls or emails, but they are not available for one-on-one assistance or tutoring.
Flexible Scheduling
In a traditional classroom, students must attend classes on a specific schedule. In an online classroom, students will have weekly assignments but also have the freedom to complete those assignments when they have time.
