Tools For Online Teaching

Online teaching tools enhance learning.

Online teaching and learning continues to grow in popularity. Not only is learning online convenient, but it can also be significantly less expensive than a traditional college. Effective online teachers understand the different needs and learning styles of today's busy students. Understanding the basic tools necessary for productive online teaching will ensure a successful experience for both the student and the teacher.

Chat Rooms

Online chat allows for communication between the students and the teacher at a moment's notice. This is ideal because in an online environment it is easy for students to get lost on an assignment or become disengaged in a course. Chat rooms provide an environment that replicates a classroom for both socialization and learning purposes.

Bulletin and Discussion Boards

Requiring students to post responses to assignments on bulletin boards or to debate class topics on discussion boards fosters writing skills by requiring such things as complete sentences and proper grammar. Posting also assists in developing the communication skills of the students. In a traditional classroom students would ideally debate and work through various assignments in a large or small group environment. Discussion boards allow for this type of communication and learning through the Internet.

Email

Knowing communicate correctly through email is more important than ever. Today email is used more than any other form of communication in a business environment. There is a difference between writing an email to a friend and writing a professional email. Teaching students when and use email in a business setting will enhance their ability to procure a future job.

File Sharing

File sharing, or peer to peer technology, allows users to share files from one computer to another without the use of a flash drive or CDR. Teachers can share class materials, test, assignments and research materials.
