African American women
who are pursuing a college degree can apply for financial assistance from a scholarship. Winning a scholarship helps the student avoid falling into debt by taking out numerous loans. The more scholarship funds a student receives, the less money she will need to borrow. Scholarships for undergraduate African American women are often awarded based on merit and financial need.
NANBPWC National Scholarship
The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc. offers a scholarship to select African American women. The scholarship is available to students who are entering their first year of college. Students must meet a 3.0 grade point average requirement to be considered. Students are required to submit an essay on a specified topic when applying for assistance. All requirements must be met in the year the student is graduating from high school and enrolling in a college or university.
The Three Sisters Scholarship Foundation
The Three Sisters Scholarship Foundation is open to students who graduated from Evanston Township High School in Illinois. During the selection process, preference is given to African American female students. Students must plan to enroll in an undergraduate program at a four-year college or university to be considered. As of the 2010 to 2011 academic school year, the scholarship awarded up to $1,000 to two select students. Students who excelled academically and were involved in sports are also given preference.
The Ethel Lee Hoover Ellis Scholarship
The Ethel Lee Hoover Ellis Scholarship is available to African American females in their sophomore or junior year of college. The scholarship is administered by the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club, Inc. Students must be a business major and meet a 3.0 grade point average to be considered. Students must also be residents of certain states including South Carolina, West Virginia and Florida.
Women of the ELCA Amelia Kemp Scholarship
The Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America sponsors the Amelia Kemp Scholarship for women of color. African American women who are at least 21 years of age and who are members of the ELCA can apply for financial assistance through the scholarship. As of the 2010-2011 academic school year, recipients were awarded $1,000. During the selection process, a student's involvement in the ELCA and goals are considered.
