Scholarships For Black Youth

Scholarships for Black youth help with books, computers and tuition.

You can go to college with the financial help available from various not-for-profit organizations, who set up scholarships for Black youth earning a college degree. There are scholarships available for students majoring in mathematics, journalism and architecture. Some of the scholarships are paid directly to the student, while others are paid to the enrolling college. Once you apply and receive a scholarship, check if it is renewable. You must reapply each year, if the scholarship can be renewed.

National Society of Black Engineers

The NSBE provides several scholarships for students studying engineering. You must be a member of the National Society of Black Engineers to qualify for application. The annual membership fee in 2010 was $5 for pre-college members, $15 for collegiate members and $50 for graduates. The application process is done online through the NSBE website. You may apply for more than one scholarship, however, you can only receive two awards each year. If the scholarship also includes an internship, you may only participate in one internship and must decide which one, prior to the scholarship being awarded.

Ronald McDonald House Charities

You must be 21 years of age or younger, live within the geographic area of the participating Ronald McDonald House and be an American citizen to receive the African-American Future Achievers Scholarship. Other criteria include having a 2.7 or higher grade point average and disclosing any other scholarships for which you applied. One parent must be African American or Black Caribbean to be eligible for this scholarship. Most of the scholarships are a minimum of $1,000; however, this amount varies according to the participating Ronald McDonald House.

Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship

If you have chosen criminal justice as your major, then you may apply for the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship. You must provide proof of financial need, enrollment in an accredited college and also write a 250-word essay. The essay centers around Martin Luther King Jr. and his beliefs, and should reflect your actions to emulate his philosophies. You are also asked to provide information concerning your grade point average.

United Negro College Fund

The UNCF website has a general scholarship application which makes you eligible for the various scholarships offered to UNCF members. There is also a list of other available scholarships from companies and organizations, listed on the UNCF site, that may require a separate application and review process. Each scholarship requires different criteria for eligibility. Some of the companies offering the scholarships include AT&T, Frito-Lay and the Hershey Company.
