Missouri Nursing Schools

Missouri is the home of a number of well-recognized nursing schools.

Missouri is the home of some nationally ranked nursing schools. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the growth of the job market for nurses will grow by some 22 percent over the next decade. Attending a top-rated or well-recognized nursing program can be the first step in securing a high-paying position with a hospital, private practice or research institution. Students in the state of Missouri have a number of high-quality choices available.

University of Missouri--Kansas City

The University of Missouri in Kansas City (UMKC) has one of the nation's top nursing programs, according to U.S. News and World Report. The UMKC School of Nursing ranked as one of the top-100 nursing colleges nationwide according to U.S. News and World Report's most recent rating of nursing schools, which was last completed in 2007. UMKC ranked 95th overall. One of the hallmarks of UMKC's program, as with any other top nursing program, is its wide array of degree offerings and research emphases. UMKC offers not only the traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing for traditional nursing students, but also the RN to BSN track, which is an accelerated program for licensed registered nurses with an associate's degree already working in the field. The program also has an accelerated BSN track that allows enterprising students to move quickly from the bachelor's degree program directly into the PhD program. A Doctor of Nursing Practice degree is also offered by UMKC. The PhD program at UMKC specializes in a number of important research areas including muscle fatigue and aging, HIV prevention, violence prevention, end-of-life and cancer care, the connection between prenatal programming and diseases that manifest in adult life and, finally, the relationship between cardiovascular health and exercise.

St. Louis University

St. Louis University (SLU) is also one of the top nursing programs in the nation, according to the U.S. News and World Report rankings. As the 54th highest rated program in the United States, SLU's School of Nursing owes much to its Catholic Jesuit tradition and its emphasis on academic excellence and hard work. The SLU program differs from the UMKC program and many others in that it places far more emphasis on the training of nurses within the context of their regular work environment, rather than the classroom setting. This "interprofessional" training introduces upcoming nurses to the necessary interpersonal dynamics of working in a hospital or any other setting where they are required to work cooperatively with other professionals in the medical field such as doctors, surgeons, administrators and other nurses. In addition to the traditional BSN program, SLU offers the RN to BSN track and an accelerated BSN degree track for students entering the program with a bachelor's degree or higher in another field outside of the nursing profession. SLU offers four different graduate degrees, which include the Master of Science, an accelerated Master of Science, the Doctor of Nursing Practice and the PhD.

University of Missouri--Columbia

The University of Missouri in Columbia (MU) is the home of the state's best nursing program. U.S. News and World report ranked MU's program at No. 47 in the United States for 2007. Like the programs at SLU and UMKC, MU's program offers degrees that run the gamut from the bachelor's degree up through a PhD. Like SLU, MU offers an accelerated program for students working outside of the field with a bachelor's degree in a field other than nursing. The RN to BSN program offered at Missouri is offered in an online format so that nurses already working in the field can continue to do so while completing their BSN degree. Graduate degrees include the Master of Science, PhD and the Doctor of Nursing Practice. The University of Missouri is the home of one of the state's most prominent medical schools and research facilities. Students in the nursing program benefit from a direct ongoing relationship with the medical school and its facilities.
