New York State Government Grants

Municipalities, non-profit organizations and individuals located in New York State can benefit from New York State government grants. Whether paying for higher education, funding performing, visual arts or music programs, acquiring and developing land for recreational use, or a host of other needs, New York State provides funding to improve quality of life for residents.

New York State Council on the Arts Grants

The New York State Council on the Arts provides approximately 2,500 grants annually for non-profit arts organizations along with individual units of local government. While individual artists are not directly funded, non-profit organizations may sponsor an artist for a particular project. Public college and universities are ineligible for funding. For 2011, all grants are over the amount of $2,500, but generally fund one-half or less of the proposed project. Full proposal amounts are rarely funded.

Tuition Assistance Program

The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation oversees the New York State Tuition Assistance Program for eligible college students living in and attending an accredited public or private institution of higher learning in the state. Only U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents may apply for TAP grants. Award amounts depend on financial status, tuition amount and number of immediate family members currently attending college.

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Grants

Nonprofit organizations, local government agencies and municipalities may be eligible for the various grants offered through the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Grants. Many of these grants require matching, either in funds or in-kind work. Acquisition grants allow counties or towns to purchase open space or parkland, while the parks programs provides funds for recreational development. The snowmobile trail grant program provides money allowing local governments to develop and maintain these trails.

New York State Housing Corporation Grants

The New York State Affordable Housing Corporation funds eligible non-profit organizations and governmental agencies for acquisition, rehabilitation or renovation of existing housing stock for the benefit of low and moderate-income residents. For 2011, maximum grants range up to $35,000 per unit, with an additional $5,000 for designated high-cost areas. All grantees assume responsibility for financial eligibility of the eventual home buyer.
