Check A Teacher'S Credentials

All parents want to make sure that their child is receiving the best education by a teacher who is certified to teach a particular subject. Unfortunately, non-certified teachers are receiving jobs in schools on a regular basis. Follow the steps below to check a teacher's credentials.

Instructions

1. Find out the teachers full name. A search cannot go very far without this information. Also, know what state in which she received her teacher's certification.

2. Request a meeting with the teacher and ask her any questions you may have about her education and certification. Do not ask personal questions.

3. Meet with the principal or superintendent from the school the teacher works at and ask to see the teachers application and resume. These are public records.

4. Research information about the teacher. Use microfiche at your local library to look for any information about her. Also, ask the school officials if there is a website in your state that checks these credentials. California and Texas offer such a service, and IBM offers a national service for many school districts.

5. Contact the state board of education that this particular teacher is certified through and they will be able to tell you what subjects she is certified to teach and what grades this certification is good for.
