Cope With Homesickness In College

Being away from your family, friends and the environment that you’re used to be in can be a rough experience to go through. Many college students deal with homesickness, and it’s completely normal. If you’re having a problem with being homesick and you’re wondering how you can cope and get through it so you can just enjoy your college experience, here are some things you can do that may help.

Instructions

1. Concentrate on building your college life. Focus on looking into clubs or sports to join, visit various beginning of the year events and prepare yourself for college classes. When you’re busy on getting yourself settled, you’ll be less likely to focus on being homesick.

2. Avoid talking to those back home in excessive amounts. Constantly calling, emailing and instant messaging your family and friends back home won’t help you to focus on your college life. The only thing it will do is keep you homesick and hold you back from moving forward. Talking in limited amounts is fine, but don’t overdo it.

3. Spend time with new acquaintances. Instead of focusing those that are back home, start spending time with new people that you met and start forming some friendships. New friends will be able to help you get out and have fun when you’re feeling upset and help you to build new relationships.

4. Write in a journal. This will help you to release your feelings without holding back. Putting it all out on paper may help you to move past your homesickness a lot quicker. This is especially useful if you don’t feel like you can spill all of your feelings to your acquaintances just yet. Try to write in it a little each day, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
