The Average College Tuition Costs Per Year

When you attend college, you might pay tuition and expenses equal to the value of a luxury car, or you might pay close to nothing. The average college tuition increase per year generally outpaces inflation, but this point does not factor in outside financial help that students might receive. Also, many students have several options for a low-cost education or ways to defray some of the rising costs of a college education.


Identification


The average cost of a college education does not give you the true cost of what students pay, because the average differs greatly depending on what type of university you attend. A student at a public two-year university paid about $2,713 in tuition and fees in the 2007-2008 school year, but add all expenses and the total jumped to $12,000. Students at four-year universities paid just under $20,000; and those at four-year nonprofit private schools paid about $35,000 during the 2007-2008 school year, according to U.S. News and World Report.


Considerations


Because of the wide spectrum of college costs, it is better to use the median cost of college tuition, which was about $9,000 in 2010, according to College Board. Also, published figures do not include offsets, such as financial aid and scholarships. Financial aid brought the average total expenses at a four-year university down to about $10,000 and those at a nonprofit four-year university to about $17,000 in the 2007-2008 school year.


Rising Costs


In general, college costs increase at about twice the rate of overall inflation in the economy, or 8 percent for college tuition, according to the website FinAid. This means that the price of tuition doubles about every nine years, which means a person born today probably will pay close to three times the average price of tuition at the time of his birth.


Tip


It always pays to apply to several colleges and compare their financial aid offers, regardless of their published price. Apply for aid as early as possible, because colleges tend to give awards at the beginning of the year. Consider attending a two-year college and matriculating to a four-year university -- you might even receive a scholarship for transferring with high grades. Take advanced-placement courses during high school. If you score high enough on the AP exams, the college awards you credit. Also, study for entrance exams, such as the ACT and SAT, because colleges give more aid when you far exceed their admission requirements.

The Volunteer in Services to America (VISTA) program is a part of Americorps, an independent federal agency dedicated to bettering the country and its communities through volunteer service. VISTA focuses on eliminating poverty and helping better low-income neighborhoods. This program offers the ability to earn an education award to be applied to paying down qualified outstanding student loans.


Instructions








1. Know the VISTA volunteer requirements. You must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer in the VISTA program. A criminal history and background check also will be conducted during the application process.


2. Understand the time commitment. Unlike other Americorps programs, you must be available full-time (at least 40 hours a week) for a period of one year to qualify for an education award or end-of-year stipend payment.


3. Recognize the benefits. In addition to a $4,725 education award or end-of-year stipend payment, VISTA volunteers also may qualify for limited health care benefits, dependent child care cost-payment assistance, a modest living allowance and payment of relocation expenses.


4. Perform your volunteer service. Complete one full year of full-time service in the available volunteer program of your choice.


5. Make a decision regarding the award. You may claim either an education award or elect a year-end stipend. The dollar amounts are $4,725 for both.

3. Research graduate schools. The first level of searching is done online. Review the various websites of journalism graduate schools. Find schools that meet cost and curriculum requirements. Some schools have programs online for busy professionals who need to work while attaining a masters degree in journalism. Make calls and visit the schools that make your final cut to determine which ones are best.


4. Create a portfolio. One advantage for journalism undergrads is that they have written extensively and can easily create online and hard copy examples of their work. Other professionals may do the same thing with some extra work. The Internet offers ample opportunities for anyone with basic writing skills and a desire to write. Not only will this give others examples of writing capability, it also gives the writer an opportunity to get feedback professional editors.


5. Find an internship. Once accepted to a journalism masters program, it's a good idea to look for a media outlet in search of interns. This provides on-the-job experience for the potential graduate, a chance to apply education and a possible job opportunity upon graduation.

Mathematician Careers

Mathematicians study numbers and develop theories and principles by discovering relationships between them. Much of their work is used to solve engineering, business, economic and computer problems. They typically work in comfortable, air-conditioned offices with other scientists, or in classrooms as part of university faculty. While they may have access to computers and other calculating devices, most use old-fashioned blackboards or whiteboards to calculate equations.








Types


There are two types of mathematicians, though their work often overlaps. Theoretical mathematicians expand on basic knowledge without necessarily finding its practical uses. Many work for colleges, combining both teaching and research. Applied mathematicians solve practical problems with mathematical principles and often work for business, industry or government. As of May 2009, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says that both types earn a median $93,580 per year, with a low of $50,960 and a high of $142,460.


Related Jobs


Other positions use mathematics heavily. Actuaries analyze statistical data to predict risk and payouts, primarily for the insurance industry. They earn a median $87,210. Statisticians collect and analyze numerical data and turn it into information useful for other fields such as business or agriculture. They earn a median $72,820. Economists study supply and demand chains such as labor, natural resources, machinery, sales and production to forecast trends in business, inflation, employment, interest rates and the costs of goods and services. Their median annual wage is $86,930.


Education


Mathematicians working in private industry require at least a Ph.D., since they often work in research laboratories as part of technical teams. Entry-level jobs in the federal government require at least a bachelor's degree, while businesses typically require a master's degree or higher. Many educational programs encourage math students to double-up on courses related to the field, such as computers, economics or engineering. This makes them more desirable to employers, since many math majors in business work in related fields.








Outlook


The BLS predicts mathematician jobs to grow by 22 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is much faster than average for all jobs. Advancing technology will drive this growth since it requires applied math. Computer software development, operations research and financial analysis are just some of the fields that are expected to grow. Job competition will be strong, however, since at 2,770 total jobs, the field is small. Those with a strong background in related fields will find the best opportunities.

Apply For Government Student Loans

Government student loans help pay for college.


Student loans are one of many ways that students obtain funding for college or university. Though the amount of government student loans vary, applying for government student loans is a similar process in every state. There are requirements, such as attending college or university, but applying for the loan takes only a few hours.


Instructions








1. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Any government aid, especially federal aid, requires the FAFSA be filled out before aid can be awarded. The FAFSA requests information about the school, personal tax information, parental tax information and other similar information. Each state will have similar forms, though there are some variations based on state taxes.


2. Select the option for student loans. There are options to receive grants, work study programs, scholarships and loans on the FAFSA. In most cases, the grants, scholarships and work study programs are need-based only, but loans are usually available to most students. For federal loans, select the option to receive loans.


3. Fill out information about the type of student loan requested. Since the federal government offers both subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans, the information for each loan needs to be filled out. In general, these will be within the FAFSA application or at the end of the application.


4. Sign papers sent in the mail. The government loans allow for the application to be filled out and sent over the internet, but the final paper is sent through the mail requesting a signature and the amount of the loan.


5. Apply for state loans. Some states have student loan options on a state government basis. These often require a FAFSA before they can be filled out. Many of the state loans are designed for graduate students, such as PLUS loans through the state. Parents can also apply on behalf of their children.


6. Fill out state tax forms for state loans. The state loans require information about state tax information. Some states have loans for lower income families but do not have options for higher income families.


7. Send all of the application forms through the online sites. Though signatures will be required in many cases, the application forms for both state and federal student loans are submitted directly online.

Gain Dual Citizenship In The U S

The U.S. allows for its citizens and citizens of other nations who qualify for U.S. citizenship to hold dual citizenship. While the United States permits citizens to hold dual nationality, there are nations that do not. If you are from a country that does not allow dual citizenship and you wish to obtain U.S. citizenship, you will lose your current citizenship when you become a U.S. citizen. Check with your department of state to verify whether or not you can hold dual nationalities. The application process for dual citizenship in the U.S. is no different than the regular application for citizenship.


Instructions


1. Identify a connection. You cannot just "apply" for dual citizenship to the United States, or any country for that matter. You must have a connection in order to apply for citizenship. In the United States, you can apply for citizenship either through family connection, marriage, or by a minimum length of legal residency (legal through a work or residency visa for at least 5 years). If you do not qualify under one of these connections, you are not eligible (yet) to apply for U.S. citizenship.


2. Apply for citizenship through family connection. Children under the age of 18 adopted by a U.S. citizen automatically gain U.S. citizenship, as do children born to a U.S. citizen on foreign soil. However, for those who wish to immigrate into the United States as relatives of U.S. citizens who are either above the age of 18 or are a non-immediate family member, application for citizenship cannot occur until the Petition for Alien Relatives, form I-130, has been both filed, granted, and followed by the I-485 application which grants permanent residency. Only after 5 years of permanent residency can an immigrant to the United States apply for citizenship.








3. Apply for citizenship through marriage. Spouses of U.S. citizens who are living in the United States can apply for citizenship after 3 years of marriage. If you are neither married nor in the United States yet, you will need to file a petition to receive the K-1 fiancé visa, marry the U.S. citizen within 90 days of entry on the visa, and apply for permanent residency (also the I-485 form). After three years of legal permanent residency you can apply for citizenship.


4. Complete the N-400 form. The form can be found at the USCIS website (refer to resources below) print and complete the form. Never lie on a government form. Attached with your application form, you must include a $595.00 application fee in the form of check or money order made payable to the Department of Homeland Security. At the time of your interview, you will also be required to submit a biometrics fee of $75.00.


5. File the application for citizenship. You must file your N-400 application for naturalization with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) filing center that holds jurisdiction over your area. There are two filing centers in the U.S.: if you live in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Guam, or the Northern Mariana Islands, file your application through the Phoenix, Arizona center, all others file through the Lewisville, Texas center.

6. Attend the appointed interview and examination for naturalization. After submission of your N-400, it will be reviewed and you will be scheduled to attend an interview at the nearest USCIS center. At the interview, you must pass an English and civics exam as well as provide biometrics data. Upon completion and satisfactory results of the exam and interview, you will be asked to swear an oath of citizenship, and will then be granted documentation of U.S. citizenship.

Write A Personal Statement For A Gene Therapy Phd

Applying to institutions of higher learning for admission to their PhD programs requires mountains of paperwork, but the most challenging composition for candidates with more passion for figures and formulas than creative writing is a personal statement. Not only can it be daunting to find the right combination of words most likely to set you apart from the crowd, but the sheer terror of knowing that while you may have the intellect of Salk or Sabin, your writing skills are closer to those of Homer Simpson. But luckily admissions committees are not looking for "Gone With the Wind" when they open envelopes filled with required paperwork. They seek a compelling personal story that only you can tell.


Instructions


1. Examine criteria and guidelines received from universities to which you intend to apply. Some colleges give applicants their maximum word count, the freedom to craft a general statement and offer no suggestions for writing it. Others require a candidate to answer one or more specific questions within a set number of words. Be prepared to write both.


2. Ask yourself what there is about your life, personality and ambitions that makes you a good candidate for a Ph.D. program. List all impressive, unique personal accomplishments and honors you have earned. Add a list of the people who have most strongly influenced you and explain why. As an exercise in focus, write a sentence about yourself that nobody else can write and you're off to a good start.


3. Draft a second list composed of academic accomplishments and out-of-classroom experiences that lead you to conclude that gene therapy is the field in which you belong. Don't limit accomplishments to scientific disciplines. You may also possess terrific business or managerial skills learned as an undergraduate, so don't leave them out.


4. Assemble a final list of examples describing personal growth and ethics. Experiencing physical or monetary difficulties that forced you to leave school for a period may not be the stuff of which personal statements are made in your mind, but admissions committees don't agree. Such experiences show your character, resolve, commitment and conviction. Explain how bumps in the road influenced the way you look at others and yourself. Your strengths as a human being will help you stand out.


5. Don't be tempted to write a "one-size-fits-all" personal statement and then send it to every school to which you are applying. Academicians agree that the time you've saved isn't worth risking being eliminated because the document has "all-purpose" written all over it. Remember that the folks evaluating your documents have probably been doing this for years.


6. Avoid going back in time to add weight to your profile. Supporting information about high school experiences are seen as filler interjected by candidates with no recent accomplishments. Politics and religion have no place in your personal statement either. As a rule of thumb, use the name of the school to which you are applying to show that you took time to research the facility, faculty, programs and campus and have concluded it's a good fit for you. The more you match your talents and personality to the facility, the better candidate you will become in the eyes of those making the cuts.


7. Pretend you are composing an e-mail to very intelligent friend. Tell the story of your life, your ambitions, your hopes and your dreams. Be specific and logical. Avoid using clichés and statements that sound arrogant, preachy, silly, all knowing, off-center and self-serving. Spend the most amount of time crafting your opening and closing paragraphs. Stuff these two sections with the most compelling information, the most notable facts and the best testaments to your aspirations.


8. Ask at least three people to read the draft. Ideally, one reader should be skilled at spelling, punctuation, syntax, word and sentence structure. Ask a writer friend to help you smooth out the rough spots so your story has logical transitions and moves along effortlessly. Pay particularly close attention to the word limit you have been given.

Find And Qualify For Scholarships

Planning out your college career goals is an exciting, and often overwhelming process. Between choosing a major, where you would like to study and visiting schools, you may overlook an important part of going to college: cost. Most families cannot afford to pay for college tuition, books, or room and board without some assistance. Scholarships are a great way to help curb your college costs, and there are scholarships available for just about every student situation and skill set.

1. Ask your guidance counselor for information on any local scholarships you may be eligible for. Even if your grades are not the best, you may be eligible for scholarships pertaining to your extracurricular activities (especially if these activities influence your chosen area of study in college), work history or even family situations. You school guidance office should also have access to scholarship information for nationwide scholarship opportunities. Local scholarship opportunities can include local businesses, grocery stores, and religious organizations.


2. Research your club or organization websites or speak with your club adviser about scholarship opportunities. Organizations like the National Honors Society (NHS) recognize excellence in high school academics and leadership skills through volunteering and other activities. The United States NHS website notes that since 1946, the NHS has provided more then $10 million in scholarships.








3. Check online scholarship services. 1. Consider your child's spelling/reading level. Gather some ideas about words your child spells well, and words he stumbles over. Does your child have a weekly spelling list or vocabulary worksheet from school? Did he bring a textbook home with new history words?


2. Consider your child's interests. Besides words used at school, think about terms used in her hobbies. Possible ideas might include soccer, outer space, sharks, dinosaurs, and animals. Be creative!


3. Consider silliness. Make every third or fifth word silly to keep your child interested. Depending on the age group, mild bathroom humor can be helpful.

Basketball Scholarship Limits

There are three major governing bodies for college basketball: the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics comprise four-year schools, and the National Junior College Athletic Association is for two-year schools. Each has its own rules setting limits on college basketball scholarships, but even within the governing bodies, there are separate limits with distinct rules for each division -- sometimes with differences for men's and women's basketball.


NCAA Division I


NCAA Division I teams have the most funding. These are the teams you see on TV during March Madness. Each is permitted 13 men's scholarships and 15 women's scholarships a year. Most Division I basketball scholarships are full rides, because the NCAA regards Division I basketball as a "head count" sport. A team member receiving any kind of institutional or athletic department aid is counted against the basketball team's head count limit, even if the player primarily was recruited to play another sport -- unless it's football. Even noninstitutional financial programs -- federal Pell Grants, for example -- cannot be used to give the athlete aid beyond what the NCAA defines as a full scholarship which includes tuition and fees, room and board including 21 meals a week, books and supplies; other permitted expenses related to attending the school, including medical care and insurance would also be included. For all NCAA schools, the cost of a "full" scholarship cannot exceed the amount listed in official school publications as the cost for attending the school.


NCAA Division II


NCAA Division II schools are allowed the equivalent of 10 full scholarships for both men's and women's teams. "Equivalent" means the scholarships can be split among team members. For example, one player might receive a full ride, but another scholarship may be split with one player receiving tuition, fees, books and supplies and another player getting the room and board along with ancillary permitted expenses portions. In Division II, if a player participates in more than one sport, the scholarship money can be split against the limits for each sport.


NCAA Division III


Athletic scholarships are not allowed in Division III. However, athletes can receive academic scholarships or need-based financial grants or loans as long as they meet the criteria used to give aid to other students. In addition, the school can direct the athletes toward outside financial aid for which they might qualify, including grants from federal and state programs.


NAIA Division I


Both men's and women's teams are allowed 11 scholarships, but athletes receiving academic or need-based grants from outside sources are not counted against the limit. Athletic scholarships can cover only tuition, fees, books, supplies, room and board; partial scholarships are common.


NAIA Division II


The rules regarding scholarships are the same as those for NAIA Division I except each team is limited to six scholarships.


NJCAA Division I


Scholarships at the top junior college level can be full rides, with tuition, fees, books, supplies, room and board included. However, schools can provide partial scholarships, too. The limit is 15 scholarships for both men's and women's teams.


NJCAA Division II


Men's and women's teams in Division II also get 15 scholarships, but room and board can't be included -- only tuition, fees and books.


NJCAA Division III


As with NCAA Division III, there are no athletic scholarships available for this group of two-year schools. Athletes can qualify for academic or need-based aid.


Scholarship Terms


Athletic scholarships are year-by-year. They are typically renewed each year, but a high school basketball player getting a scholarship offer is not guaranteed four years of aid.

Motivate Adult Learners







Teaching adults is its own field, with its own challenges and methods. As a teacher of adults, your task is specialized: they already know most of what they need, but are receiving instruction on something specific like a computer program or a language. Stay focused on what you are instructing and use the general methods below to keep your students working along with you.


Instructions


1. Find their interests. Experienced teachers do this by getting to know their students, through icebreakers and introductory activities, focusing on names, hobbies and occupations. Appealing to a student's interests is a main part of engaging someone of any age.


2. Keep the pace. Don't let the lessons get bogged down in technical details. Find your own "big-picture" approach to the subject that teaches the "why" more than the "what." This will keep your students focused; they can find the smaller details themselves as they continue learning.








3. Find the right activity mix. Do only what's necessary. Your adult students are already knowledgeable on a wide variety of topics; don't hit them over the head with redundant or tedious material, such as grammar in language. Teaching below an adult student's level is a common mistake and has a negative effect. Try to work with your adult students to keep ahead of them so that they are challenged.


4. Find "hands-on" activities. Work to apply your lessons to the everyday, letting students practice the teachings in a realistic environment. For language, this is conversation. For IT, it may mean getting students into actual engineering or programming environments. Just lecturing will not help your students like the hands-on aspect will, and as educations evolves, instructors are learning this crucial part of adapting to modern methodology in teaching.


5. Use group work and group activities to keep your students engaged and challenged. In any group of adult students, there is the potential for a larger interaction. Set up tasks, quizzes or projects where your students work with each other, delegating roles and solving problems in groups. This is a very effective way of enhancing your lessons.

A main idea sentence is the key to cohesive, effective writing. The main idea is the leading point that guides your readers so they easily can decipher the point of your writing. A few simple steps can produce effortless main idea sentences.


Instructions








1. Identify the topic. All writing has a topic, and the topic is the most general idea in a piece of writing. The topic can usually be condensed into one word. Some examples include "children," "music" or "food."


2. Pick a direction. The direction is how you want to talk about a topic or what you want to say about it. If you were writing about children, you might decide to write specifically about the stresses involved in parenting or the money requirements inherent in raising a child. Both would be suitable directions.


3. String the two together. When you join a topic and direction, you have a topic sentence. An example might be, "Raising children requires financial stability to avoid undue stress on parents." In this case, "raising children" is the topic while "requires financial stability to avoid undue stress on parents" represents the direction.








4. Think of an umbrella. A main idea sentence is sort of like an umbrella in that it covers all of the possible examples you might use in your writing. Once you write a topic sentence, decide whether you can expand it into a paragraph or essay without repeating yourself or including extraneous details to fill space.


5. Put your main idea sentence to use. As you write your paragraph or essay, let your main idea keep you on track. Do not write anything that does not fall under the umbrella of your main idea sentence. Repeat your main idea at the end of your writing to bring a piece full-circle.

Do Laundry In A Dorm

Laundry is not always fun no matter where you are but a dorm can make it an even more unpleasant. All dorms are different when it comes to location of the laundry, some being on your floor or some in the basement. Look on the bright side if your laundry is in the basement at least you will get your exercise.


Instructions


1. Purchase a laundry bag, basket or hamper. You can easily drag a bag down the hall, carry a basket on your hip or a wheel hamper on wheels to the laundry room.


2. Check with your dorm to see whether the machines take quarters or another form of payment. Washers and dryers often take quarters, but some colleges have you use your student ID instead.








3. Bring laundry detergent, fabric softener and dryer sheets from off campus. Many dorms have dispensers to purchase these items from but it can get expensive.


4. Decide on a day to do laundry once a week, so your laundry doesn't get overwhelming. You'll want to pick a time of day when the laundry is least busy. Watch the first few weeks of school and see if there's a pattern so you can choose both the day and the time to set aside for your laundry.


5. Sort your dark and white clothes before you go to the laundry room. Have two laundry bags and separate them as you take them off to eliminate this step.


6. Follow the directions on the machine on use them.








7. Set a timer so you can keep track of when your laundry is done. Leave your basket next to the machine in case you are not back when the timer goes off, otherwise the next person may put your clean clothes on the floor. Alternately, you can just sit in the laundry room and study while your clothes are washing.

Definition Of Education Tax Deductions

In the United States, education tax deductions are reductions from taxable income allowed on an individual taxpayer's income tax return under the Internal Revenue Code. Although tax deductions are very similar to education tax credits, and indistinguishable by the vast majority of tax payers, the two forms of educational tax benefit work in a slightly different way.


General


Education tax deductions are claimed by individual income taxpayers for certain qualified education-related expenditures on Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. The amount of the education tax deductions are used to offset the taxpayer's total income, which is used to compute the taxpayer's adjusted gross income and, subsequently, the taxpayer's taxable income. Education tax deductions often have little benefit for taxpayers in very low-income tax brackets or who pay no income tax.


Tuition and Fees Deduction








There are two types of education tax deductions: a student loan interest deduction and the tuition and fees deduction. The tuition and fees deduction is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the amount of gross income for up to $4,000 of higher education expenses, including tuition, books, boarding and other educational fees. The deduction is on a per taxpayer basis (as opposed to a per student basis) and is phased out and eventually eliminated for high-income taxpayers.








Student Loan Interest Deduction


The second type of education deduction is the student loan interest deduction. This deduction allows the taxpayer to reduce gross income dollar-for-dollar for up to $2,500 in qualified student loan interest. Like the tuition and fees deduction, the student loan interest deduction is on a per taxpayer basis. The deduction is available until student loans are fully repaid, not only when the student is enrolled, although the deduction is phased out for higher-income taxpayers.


Credits


There are several education tax credits available under the Internal Revenue Code. Since these credits operate so similarly to education tax deductions, they are generally discussed simultaneously. While tax deductions reduce the amount of the taxpayer's taxable income, credits directly reduce the amount of the taxpayer's tax liability. Thus, if the taxpayer has a $5,000 tax, a $1,000 credit will reduce the amount of the tax to $4,000. Credits may be either refundable or nonrefundable. A nonrefundable credit may reduce the amount of tax to a minimum of $0. A refundable credit can reduce the amount of tax to a negative value and result in a payment to the taxpayer.


Types


The education tax credits available under the Internal Revenue Code include the Hope credit, the American opportunity credit and the lifetime learning credit. The Hope credit is available for students in the first two years of post-secondary education and has a maximum value of $1,800 per eligible student. The American opportunity credit is available for students in the first four years of post-secondary education and has a maximum value of $2,500 per eligible student. The lifetime learning credit is is available for students in all levels of post-secondary education and has a maximum value of $2,000 per eligible student.

Write A Letter To Ask For A Recommendation

Requesting a letter of recommendation is an important part of the admissions process.


The best way to ask for a recommendation is in person, creating a face-to-face connection that allows your recommender to remember exactly who you are and what you have done in the past. If the situation, however, does not allow you to arrange a personal meeting with your potential recommender, you should write a letter or email that creates that same experience, making sure the recipient remembers who you are and establishing a meaningful personal connection.


Instructions


1. Begin with a salutation. Depending on the nature of your relationship with the person you can be more or less formal, but make sure you are being respectful. Standard salutations like "Dear Dr. Smith" are always appropriate, but you can omit the person's title or last name if you usually addressed them by another name.








2. Remind the person how you know them, especially if he is busy and hasn't seen you in a long time. Statements like "I hope your project has gone well since I left the lab last August" serve to establish a connection and place you in the person's memory.


3. Establish a connection. Depending on the nature of your relationship with the person, you can choose to include an anecdote that he will remember fondly, or simply discuss what the relationship has meant to you or to your career. Sentences like "My time in the lab was enormously fruitful and has determined many of my academic interests since," are usually well received.


4. Transition to a request for a letter. Begin by updating the person on your plans and why you need the letter of recommendation. If the person knows you well, he will be interested in knowing what you are up to, so do not be afraid to elaborate. Keep the tone friendly and upbeat. After providing the context, state that you would like a letter of recommendation.


5. Allow the person to decline. You want a letter of recommendation written by a person who has the time and interest to do so. Clearly state that you understand if he does not have enough time at the moment to write a letter, allowing him to politely decline if he can't produce something that will help you get into the program you want.


6. Provide complete details on the process. Inform the person of exactly what you need and when you need it by. Including complete contact information for yourself in case he has any questions.








7. Thank the person for his time. Finish the letter cordially, even if he cannot ultimately write your recommendation.

Nuclear Medicine Training Schools

Nuclear medicine technologists often use X-ray imaging.


The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the number of jobs for nuclear medicine technologists will increase by 16 percent through 2018. This is slightly higher than the average rate of job growth for all other professions. Nuclear medicine technologists use diagnostic imaging such as X-rays and other tests to assist physicians in diagnosing disease. Employment requirements in the field vary by state. For this reason, schools offer certificate programs, associate degrees and bachelor's degrees in the field to meet student needs.


University of Central Arkansas


The University of Central Arkansas offers a Bachelor of Science in the field of nuclear medicine technology. The program has accreditation from the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation. The program is a collaborative effort by UCA and the Baptist Medical Center. Students complete three years of coursework at UCA and one year of additional clinical coursework at the BMC. Admission to the clinical coursework is on a competitive basis, so there are no guarantees that students will complete the final year of study at BMC. Students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 throughout their other coursework and complete prerequisite courses in various fields such as chemistry and biology. Courses include areas of study such as nuclear physics and radiochemistry, radiobiology and patient care.

Medical College of Georgia


The Medical College of Georgia offers a Bachelor of Science in radiological science with a nuclear medicine technology emphasis. The school offers two routes to the degree. Students with a certificate or associate degree can pursue the "bridge" program that allows them to apply 30 credit hours toward the bachelor's degree. The other is a transfer program for students with no background in the field. These students complete two years of study wherever they choose and then the final two years at MCG. The programs require 124 credit hours to complete. Courses offered include advanced radiological patient care, sectional anatomy, principles and practices of nuclear medicine, intro to cardiology and applied research.

University of New Mexico


Students wanting to pursue a certificate program can do so through the University of New Mexico's Department of Radiology. This program is a 14-month intensive program that combines classroom instruction with hands-on experience. The school offers a Bachelor of Science in the field as well. This program requires students to complete 134 credit hours for graduation. Courses taken as part of the program cover areas such as medical imaging theory, radiation safety, clinical radiopharmacy, imaging instrumentation, professional ethics and nuclear physics.

Rotc Basic Training

ROTC basic training is taken during the freshman and sophomore years of college.








Army ROTC (Reserve Officer's Training Corps) is a college level course that educates students in leadership, motivation and physical training. The class is divided into two components: during student's freshman and sophomore year they take the basic course, also known as basic training. Students who complete the basic course are under no obligation to join the United States Army; a commitment does not become necessary until a student's junior year, which marks the beginning of the advanced course.


Freshman Year


During their freshman and sophomore years of college, ROTC students participate in the ROTC basic course. This consists of physical training, field training exercises, one elective class and one lab. Although all colleges and universities will not have the exact same classes, the GoArmy.com website describes a typical freshman year ROTC curriculum as follows: introduction to army leadership, army customs and traditions, military operations and tactics, goal setting and accomplishment and health and physical fitness. Students in their freshman year of ROTC are not yet required to commit to the Army.


Sophomore Year


During their sophomore year, students take classes on the role of an officer in the United States Army. They will once again be required to take one elective class, one lab, and further their field and physical training. According to GoArmy.com, students should expect to take course work in applied leadership theory, communications, principles of war and military operations and tactics. By the close of their sophomore year, students are still under no obligation to the United States Army.


Leader's Training Course


For individuals who wish to take ROTC but have less than four years remaining in college, they can take the Leader's Training Course. This four week advanced course is offered during the summer at Fort Knox, KY. The course is an accelerated replica of the two-year basic training course typically taken during the freshman and sophomore year of undergrad. There are four phases of the Leader's Training Course (LTC) .


First Phase








Students in the first phase of the Leader's Training Course begin Physical Training (PT) and Drill and Ceremony (D & C). Students also work together in a Team Development course to confront obstacles and difficult situations in simulated tactical scenarios.


Second Phase


The second phase of LTC is spent learning military tactics. Students are trained in Combat Water Survival Training, marksmanship and land navigation, all the while learning work together as a team. During this phase, students also participate in additional simulated combat scenarios.


Final Phases


During the third phase of LTC, students take turns leading their squads, to get hands-on sense of army leadership during combats and ordered missions. In the final phase students participate in Family Day, receive awards and graduate from the program.

1. Housesitting is a great way to live rent-free. You can find people to house-sit for through university newspapers, Craigslist, friends and acquaintances or through the Web resources listed below. Boat-sitting is another option, but there's no central clearinghouse for people looking for boat-sitters. You'll have find boat owners who want someone to live on their boat on your own.


2. Bartering is another option. You can offer to be a live-in housekeeper or nanny in exchange for a free room in someone's apartment. Make sure to do background checks and draw up a contract to protect yourself.


3. Apartment managing is yet another way to live rent-free. In exchange for your free apartment, you are expected to do routine maintenance and cleaning. It can be a lot of work, so be prepared for this one.


4. Find an "illegal" apartment building. Landlords of these places rent them out even though they are not up to residential codes. Not an option I would recommend, but it does happen.








5. Rent your own place and take in enough people to pay the rent. A good option if you don't have the time to work for your free rent.


Reduced Rent Options


6. House-sharing is a way to live at an extremely reduced rent. This is especially good if you don't have the time to devote to apartment managing or bartering. You live with an elderly person and pay reduced rent while helping around the house.








7. Attend a college in New York City and get grants and/or loans to cover room and board. You can also look into being a residential adviser at one of the colleges.


8. Find a rent-controlled apartment or sublet. Check Craigslist for the best options.

Alternative Schools In Maryland

Individual attention is an important feature of alternative education.








Maryland has diverse types of alternative schools in both the public and private education sectors, although the majority of alternative education is typically provided by private schools. Schools for troubled teens, schools with a curriculum based on biblical teaching, an international organization supporting home schoolers, and schools with an alternative education philosophy, such as is found at Waldorf-Steiner schools, are all available in Maryland.








Accelerated Christian Education


There are a significant number of schools across Maryland offering the Bible-based curriculum from the Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) organization. The ACE teaching program has been popular since the 1970s, and led a revival in Christian education with high academic standards. The cornerstones of the program are that students learn to take responsibility for their own education, and that they see life from God's point of view. Most of the schools define themselves as Christian, but some of them represent specific denominations, such as Baptist and Mennonite.


The Learning Community International


TLCI, as it is usually referred to, is a private educational organization providing educational programs to home-schooled children in Maryland. Its Individualized Learning Empowerment program aims to support the personal strengths of each learner. Trained staff work with parents and students from kindergarten to year 12 to create a home school curriculum for each child. It is not a school as such, as it has no campus, but it offers an alternative to standard public and private schools. The school was founded in 1984 and is accredited by the Commission for International and Trans-Regional Accreditation, as well as other accrediting bodies.


Waldorf Schools


There are two Waldorf schools in Maryland, one in Baltimore and another in Bethesda. The schools are coeducational and take children from kindergarten to the 12th grade. Waldorf schools are based on the educational philosophy of Rudolph Steiner, who opened his first school in 1919. Waldorf schools place great importance on working with parents. The schools also use teaching methods that stimulate creating thinking and natural curiosity. The schools are licensed by the state and are members of the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America.


The Tomorrow Program


The Tomorrow Program is run by Maryland public schools and is available to selected students in grades nine through 12 at Chesapeake, Dundalk, Kenwood, Patapsco and Sparrows Point high schools. The program's aim is to increase the number of students graduating from high school through identifying young people in need of extra support services. Troubled teen students are provided with personal counselling, an individualized study program and career path advice. Student selection is based on recognition of student potential and recommendation by a middle school principal.
