Credit Requirements To Get Into Any Four Year College

The exact credit requirements needed to get into a 4-year college will likely vary based on the college of your choice. Some colleges and universities may put an emphasis in one area while making allowances in another area. However, there are some core requirements that all colleges look for in prospective students. Among these core requirements are credits in math, English, science and social studies.


English Requirement


English is one subject that all 4-year colleges and universities will look for in prospective students. Most of them require 4 years of high school English credits to meet the basic entrance requirements. Students who are interested in applying for college should consider taking writing-intensive courses in high school. These may not be an entrance requirement, but they will certainly make your application look good. The same is true for honors and advanced placement classes. Math Requirements


Math is another subject that is absolutely needed to get into a 4-year college. Similar to English, college admission boards want to see at least 4 years of math; however, having only 3 years may not necessarily disqualify you for admission. Your math credits should include algebra, geometry and at least one more advanced level of math. Honors and advanced placement credits will also help your application.








Social Studies Requirement








Colleges have different entrance requirements on the subject of social studies. Most 4-year colleges would like to see at least 3 years of social studies. The remaining colleges require more than 3 years. Your social studies classes should include world history, civics and economics, and United States history.


Science Requirement


The science requirements of 4-year colleges will likely vary. Most 4-year colleges or universities advise that applicants take at least 3 years of science. In some cases, only 2 years of science credits are needed. The decision rests in the hands of the admission board. It advises prospective students to take physical science, earth science and biology. Chemistry is also an option for students who want to raise their chances of admission.


Elective Requirement


Core classes are not the only credit requirements needed to get into college. Four-year colleges and universities also look at what elective classes applicants have taken in high school. Some colleges require at least 2 years of foreign language. More than 2 years of foreign language would obviously look great for college admission boards. In addition to foreign language, colleges also look for credits in fine arts, such as music and dance. This is especially true for entrance into a major that relies heavily on fine arts. Physical education is another class that colleges and universities are requiring. Even upon entrance into college, students may be required to take at least one semester of college-level physical education.

High School Cheerleading Injuries

While they don't happen as often as in other sports, high school cheerleading injuries tend to be more severe.


Cheerleading has become the leading cause of catastrophic injury in young female athletes, according to Amy Miller Bohn, a physician at the University of Michigan Health System department of family medicine in Ann Arbor, Mich. And while they don’t happen as frequently as in other sports, high school cheerleading injuries are more severe. They account for at least 65 percent of all catastrophic injuries in high school, according to the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injuries. That makes cheerleading the most dangerous activity in school.


Ankle and Wrist Sprain


A sprain is what happens when a ligament stretches or tears.


A sprain occurs when ligaments - the strong bands of tissue that connect bones within a joint - stretch or tear. Ankle and wrist sprains, two of the most common injuries among cheerleaders, can result when the ligament has suffered a hard, awkward or unnatural landing. Symptoms of a sprain are hard to dismiss; they include pain and/or tenderness, swelling, bruising, coldness or numbness in the foot and/or hand, inability to walk or bear weight on the joint and severe stiffness. The most common treatment for a sprain is rest, ice, compression and elevation. And depending upon the severity of the sprain, it could lead to chronic instability if left untreated.

Most shoulder injuries are the result of muscle strains or ligament sprains and, if treated properly, can usually be healed within two to six weeks, provided there are no serious underlying medical issues. That's why it is important to stretch before each practice and performance. Symptoms of shoulder injuries are often described as a sharp pain or a dull ache. It is important to identify the cause of pain with the help of a physician and treat it as prescribed to avoid re-injury.

Of all the injuries cheerleaders are at risk of, head and neck trauma can be the most serious.

"If you get dropped or get in the wrong position and land on the head or neck, you can die or become paralyzed," says Dr. Harris. "More often you end up breaking something. But that's still pretty serious."

Walden University


Walden University also offers the public health degree. This university is online and allows the student to complete the degree on a part-time or full-time schedule. This degree requires the completion of 56 quarter credits. Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0. The tuition cost for this program is $430 per quarter credit hour as of October 2009. The total degree cost is $24,080. Walden University is a regionally accredited university.


Capella University


Capella University is an online school that offers a master of science (MS) in public health, management and policy. This degree is offered completely online and can be taken at the student's own pace. This degree requires the completion of approximately 14 classes. The cost of each four-credit course is $1,692 as of October 2009. The cost of the program is approximately $24,000, plus a $350 graduation fee. Capella University is a regionally accredited university.


Ohio University


Ohio University offers the master's of public health degree through distance learning. This program requires the completion of 42 semester credit hours. According to Ohio University, the program will "Provide graduates with a foundation of public health skills and knowledge, including community assessment methods, analytic skills, research strategies, program implementation, evaluation, and policy development within an ethical and culturally sensitive perspective." The cost of the program is not listed on the website and potential students are encouraged to call the university at (740) 593-4675. This program is not regionally accredited. This will affect the graduating student if their career choice will require a state license or certificate.

Does A Debt Management Plan Affect College Financial Aid

With the cost of a college education skyrocketing, people are going deeper into debt than ever before to gain the tools necessary for a successful career. However, if you've experienced credit problems, it's natural to worry about how this will affect your efforts to go back to school or to help a child go off to college for the first time. This is especially true if you're enrolled in a debt management program.


Debt Management Programs


A debt management program, also known as a DMP, can be a life-saver if you fear you'll never get out of the vicious cycle of credit card debt. When you sign up for a debt management program, you'll receive reduced interest rates, enabling you to get out of debt as quickly as possible. You'll also know that at the end of the program, you'll be out of credit card debt for good. However, the fact that you're on a DMP is indicated on your credit report, and it can be hard to secure additional credit while on the program.


Financial Aid


Virtually all college students receive some form of financial aid. The different types of financial aid include scholarships issued by the school, grants provided by outside agencies, federal loans and private loans issued by banks. While most of these forms of aid renew annually, the policies regarding repayment differ significantly. Scholarships and grants do not need to be repaid, whereas federal and private loans must be paid back after the student graduates.


Credit Requirements








The good news about federal loans is that your credit isn't even considered when applying. Though these loans must be paid back, they are available to anybody who applies. The only exception to this is the PLUS loan, which only requires that you not have bad credit -- in this case, no defaults or nothing more than 90 days past due. Private loans, on the other hand, are approved in a similar fashion to conventional loans. A poor credit score will likely mean that you can't get a private loan. If you have a low credit score and you're co-signing for a child who is about to enroll in college, this could make him ineligible for the loan.


Debt Management Programs and Student Loans


The fact that you're in a debt management program has no bearing on your ability to secure a Stafford Loan, a Perkins Loan or any other type of federal loan. This also applies to a PLUS loan, provided you didn't have any significant setbacks before joining the program. Your status on the debt management program also shouldn't impact your chances of getting a private loan. If your credit score is good enough, the lender won't even look at your credit report closely enough to see that you're on a DMP. You should be able to secure any necessary financial aid you need, regardless of your being on a debt management program.

Private colleges offer free tuition programs to make higher education a reality for many deserving and promising students.








To make education ever more accessible, private colleges have launched several enticing "affordability initiatives," which include eliminating tuition fees altogether as of February 2011. Some private colleges award free-tuition scholarships based on family income. Others emphasize a distinct field of study, while still others exact a mandatory work requirement. Many private institutions augment full scholarships with "no loan" financial aid programs that replace student loans with grants.


Work-based


Working colleges provide all students full scholarships with mandatory work requirements.


Alice Lloyd College of Pippa Passes, Kentucky, expects students to work 10 to 15 hours per week on a campus job matched to experience or preference. It accepts students from 108 central Appalachian counties in five states.


Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, exacts at least a 10-hour workweek in one of its 130 campus work areas.








Deep Springs College of Deep Springs, California, requires its all-male student population to work at least 20 hours a week doing ranch work and manual labor, such as feeding animals and mopping floors.


College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri, requires 15 hours a week at a campus work station, such as the computer center or clinic, and two 40-hour workweeks over holidays or vacation.


Focus-based


All enrolled students receive full scholarships at these discipline-focused institutions.


Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City specializes in art, architecture and engineering. Webb Institute in Glen Cove, New York, offers a double major in naval architecture and marine engineering. Curtis Institute of Music is a prominent music conservatory in Philadelphia. Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Massachusetts, provides half scholarships to all. Two Bible colleges offer full scholarships also: Barclay College in Haviland, Kansas, and Saint Louis Christian College in Florissant, Missouri.


Income-based


Family income defines free-tuition eligibility at most private colleges.


Tufts University in Medford/Somerville, Massachusetts, and John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio, assist students with family incomes of less than $40,000 per year; John Carroll University also uses grants to cover other expenses.


Cut-off family income is $60,000 a year for recipients at University of Chicago in Illinois, Soka University in Aliso Viejo, California, and Columbia University in New York City; Columbia University also offers free room and board.


Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, grants full scholarships to students with family incomes of $75,000 a year or less, as does Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, which additionally covers other student expenses with grants.


Stanford University in California provides full scholarships to students from families earning less than $100,000 a year and covers room and board for those with less than $60,000 a year family income.


Location-based


In Fairfield, Connecticut, both Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University offer full scholarships to high school graduates from nearby Bridgeport and Fairfield County; cut-off family income is set at $50,000 a year.


College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts, invites city residents who live on family incomes of less than $50,000 a year to enroll for free.

Ohio State University's College of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1885 and has graduated more than 7,000 veterinarians. The college's Veterinary Medical Center treats more than 30,000 animals per year. Degree programs are offered in veterinary bioscience, preventative medicine and clinical science departments. Tuition for Ohio residents is $8,638 per quarter with three quarters comprising the academic year. Cost per quarter for non-residents is $19,792. Living expenses and the cost of books can add an additional $23,000 per year.








Clemson University


South Carolina's Clemson University has a full-service Animal and Veterinary Sciences department. Students can earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal and Veterinary Sciences with specializations such as pre-veterinary science and equine business. The university also offers Master's and Doctoral graduate degree programs in Animal and Veterinary Sciences. South Carolina residents pay $12,346 in tuition and fees per year with room, board, supplies and books adding around $8,000. Yearly tuition for non-residents is $27,858.

Start A Dental Assistant School

Not all dental assistants are required to attend training or complete a formal education program prior to working in an actual office assisting a dentist. For some, on-the-job training can provide them with the skills and knowledge they need. Some dentists don't want to train assistants, though, which is why it's important for colleges and other organizations to start dental assistant schools.


Instructions


1. Obtain support from local dentists. Before you start a dental assistant school or training program in a specific area, it's wise to consult with dentists and obtain their support. These dentists often can serve as resources by donating some of their older, used equipment, as well as by donating their time by guest lecturing in a class. They also can play a critical role in the success and recruitment of a dental assistant program by pledging to only hire graduates from the school.


2. Seek out funding to start the school. Starting a dental assistant school can be expensive because of the cost of equipment and paying instructors and staff. While this cost can be cut down by acquiring used equipment through donations from dentists, some type of grant or loan funding is likely to be needed to pay for all the other expenses. Grants may be available from the state or federal government if the area where the school is located has a need for trained dental assistants. Schools also have the option to seek out donations from individuals and private foundations.


3. Lease or purchase a facility. Dental assistants train in a lab setting that resembles a dental office, except multiple mini-stations or dental chairs are set up in one room. This allows more than one student to practice a task or skill at one time. As for school staff, an administrator is required to manage the daily operations of the school while administrative assistants and office professionals answer phones, provide answers to inquiries from the public and process enrollments, registrations and student records for the school.


5. Create the curriculum. To be accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation, a school must develop curriculum for a dental assistant training program. All the tasks and skills that a school plans to teach dental assistants must be broken down into units of study. In addition to classroom and lab instruction, a curriculum for a dental assistant program may contain hours and credits for practicum experiences that allow students to practice their skills in an actual dental office.


6. Write policies and procedures. Dental assistant schools are like other schools in that they need policies and procedures for handling emergency situations. In addition, dental assistant programs may need to develop and write policies pertaining to their admission's process and the requirements for a student to complete dental assistant training.


7. Apply for accreditation. Many states require dental assistant programs to be accredited, but this isn't done through the state. Instead schools apply for accreditation through the American Dental Association, and if accreditation is granted, it is recognized by the state. To apply for accreditation, dental assistant training programs must submit an application along with a self-analysis report to the Commission on Dental Accreditation. This report is completed by school administrators, instructors and staff who analyze their strengths and weaknesses in providing a dental assistant program. Two members from the commission along with a person from the dental board in the school's state make a site visit to confirm or deny the accuracy of the self-study. They then submit a report on their findings to the commission, which decides whether to give a program full, partial or no accreditation.


8. Market the program and recruit students. Once accreditation has been granted, schools can begin marketing the program and recruiting students to fill the dental assistant training programs and classes. While advertising in newspapers and on television can spread the word to the general public, niche marketing can bring higher enrollment numbers. Dental assistant schools can do niche marketing by focusing on such events as career fairs for the unemployed and high school college nights as these target people looking for careers available through short-term training.

Eli And Samuel Craft

If you tell a child to listen for God's direction, his literal mind will expect a big, booming voice from the sky. The story of Eli and Samuel in 1 Samuel 3 illustrates instead that God's voice comes softly, and a child must listen carefully and be willing to respond to his call to hear what he is saying. You can use crafts based on the Eli and Samuel tale to illustrate how a child should respond easily to God's direction. Help children demonstrate their understanding by using story models to retell the tale of God's call to Samuel.


Samuel and Eli Puppets








Kids have more fun retelling stories with puppets in hand. Use yarn, wiggly eyes, fabric scraps and markers to create Samuel and Eli puppets out of old clothespins. Or cut out paper figures of the characters and glue them to a craft stick, paint stick or drinking straw to make stick puppets.


Clothespin Beds


Props can enhance the telling of the story of God's nocturnal call to Samuel. Make model beds for Eli and Samuel using slotted wooden clothespins, craft sticks and cardboard. To make the bed posts for the head and foot of the bed, hot glue a slotted wooden clothespin to each end of two craft sticks so the slots are perpendicular to the sticks. Cut two 1-inch wide strips of cardboard to the length you want the bed to be. Slide the ends of the strips into the clothespin slots to make the sides of the bed. Cut a cardboard rectangle the width and length of the bed and lay it across the craft stick supports on either end. Use small doll figures or puppets of Eli and Samuel to re-enact the story. If you want, you can make a blanket for your characters out of fabric scraps.


God's Direction Windsock


God's direction is like the wind, which nudges a windsock to move in a certain direction. Just as the windsock easily yields to the wind, so believers are to follow Samuel's example of yielding willingly to God's instruction. Have the children decorate a wide strip of construction paper or craft foam with markers, glitter and sequins. Wind the paper or craft foam into a cylinder and staple at the top and bottom of the join. Punch a series of evenly spaced holes around the circumference of the bottom edge. Tie ribbons, yarn or crepe paper strips through the holes, letting them dangle freely. Punch two holes opposite each other in the top edge and tie on a ribbon or yarn hanger. Hang the windsock in a breezy area as a reminder to listen for and respond to God's call as Samuel did.








Listening to God Mirror


The busyness and noise of life often distract people from hearing God's "still, small voice" (1 Kings 19:12). A mirror craft gives children a daily reminder to slow down, turn off the TV or video games and listen to God, just as Eli advised Samuel. Cut out a circle of colorful construction paper a little bigger than the circumference of an old CD and glue it to the printed side of the CD. Cut out another circle in a different color, smaller than the first, and write in the center, "Speak Lord." Glue this in the center of the first circle. Cut out a third circle, just large enough to cover the center area of the shiny side of the CD. Write on it, "I am your servant and I am listening." Glue this circle in the center of the reflective side. Keep the mirror in a highly visible place as a reminder to respond willingly when God calls.

Calculate The Greatest Common Divisor

The greatest common divisor (GCD), also called greatest common factor, is often used when trying to simplify fractions. Numbers can be broken down into factors, such as 2 x 3 = 6 where two and three are factors of six. The greatest common divisor is the largest factor shared between two numbers. When trying to find the GCD of very large numbers, use prime factorization to cut down on your work. Prime factorization works out which prime numbers, or numbers that can only be divided by 1 and themselves, multiply together to create the main number. Multiplying the common prime factors is a shortcut to the GCD for larger fractions.








Instructions








1. Find the greatest common divisor of the fraction 9/15 to simplify the fraction. Write out the factors of 9 which are the numbers that 9 can be divided by: 1, 3 and 9. Write out the factors of 15: 1, 3, 5 and 15. Circle the factors that the two numbers have in common: 1 and 3. Divide both numerator and denominator by the greatest common divisor of 3: (9/3)/(15/3) = 3/5.


2. Find the greatest common divisor of 42/108 to simplify the fraction. Write out the prime factors of the numbers only since the numbers are so large. Begin with 42: 1, 2, 3 and 7 (since 1 * 2 * 3 * 7 = 42). Find the prime factors for 108: 2, 2, 3, 3 and 3. Circle the common prime factors and multiply them together to find the greatest common divisor: 2 * 3 = 6. Divide each part of the fraction by 6: (42/6)/(108/6)= 7/18.


3. Find the greatest common divisor and simplify the fraction 45/75. Find the prime factors of 45: 3, 3 and 5. Find the prime factors of 75: 3, 5 and 5. Circle the common factors and multiply them together to get the greatest common divisor: 3 * 5 = 15. Divide each part of the fraction by 15 to simplify the fraction: (45/15) / (75/15) = 3/5.

Register To Take The Gre

Making the decision to apply to graduate school is a major step that requires unwavering commitment. One of the first steps you need to take is to sign up to take the GRE (Graduate Record Exam). Almost all graduate programs require that you supply your GRE scores as part of the application process. Here are some simple guidelines to make the process of registering for the GRE a bit easier.


Instructions


Online Registration


1. Find the official GRE website that allows online registration to take the GRE (see Resources).


2. Select the option "Register to take the GRE computer-based general test." Click on "Online registration." You will be prompted to select the test for which you are registering.


3. Select "GRE general test." You will then be prompted to select the "Country/location." Select the United States, then you will be prompted to select the state. Once you have done this, another screen will appear that has several options such as "Locate a test site," "Schedule an exam," "Reschedule/cancel" and "Exam confirmation."


4. Select the option to schedule an exam. Make sure that GRE test is selected in the first box. In the second, the United States should already be selected. Select the state in which you are wanting to take the exam and then click "Next" at the bottom. On the following screen, select "Schedule an exam."


5. Throught the following screens are licensing agreements, to which you need to select "I agree." When you get to the page of exam selection, select the "GRE - Graduate Record Exam" option and click "Next." When you select "Next," you will be given a list of testing centers. Select the center at which you wish to take the exam by selecting "Schedule appointment." You can select seating availability in a 3-month period or for a specific date and time.


6. After you have selected the date, time and place that you wish to take the exam you will be asked to enter personal contact information. Following this screen, provide credit/debit card information. After you complete this process, you will be given confirmation information. Keep this information for your records.


Registration through the Postal Service


7. To register to take the GRE through the regular postal service, visit the online GRE registration site. Select "GRE" for the type of exam. Then select "Register for a GRE test." On the next screen, select "GRE general test."


8. Select "Register for GRE computer-based general test." There will be a sub-section titled "Mail." Click on "Authorization Voucher Request Form." This voucher is in PDF form and you will need to print this out.


9. Fill out the form completely and mail it to the ETS-GRE address provided at the top. Do not fax this form. You must mail this form with the appropriate payment in the form of a check or money order.


10. You will receive a voucher in the mail. At that time, you must call to schedule an appointment. The voucher will have an expiration date so call well before then.


11. If for some reason you lose the voucher, it can only be replaced once. You must contact the GRE program to get a replacement.

Become a Paramedic


Paramedics provide emergency medical care in a pre-hospital setting. They have more skills and training than basic emergency medical technicians (EMT). Paramedics treat various types of injuries and illnesses. They may provide routine care such as stabilizing a fracture. Other times paramedics need to perform life saving procedures such as administering medications and performing CPR. Paramedics usually have standing protocols which allows them to perform certain procedures if indicated. Read on to learn more.


Instructions


1. Become a basic emergency medical technician (EMT). Paramedic training requirements vary by state. Many paramedic schools require a student to be certified as an EMT before they can become a paramedic. Training to become an EMT can be found at community colleges, adult education programs and private vocation schools.


2. Apply to a paramedic program. Contact your local office of emergency services to find a list of schools in your area. Paramedic programs usually range from eight months to two years.


3. Learn perform procedures such as CPR, intubations, cardioversions and EKG's. Take classes in pharmacology, anatomy and physiology.


4. Complete an internship. Paramedic programs usually include a specific number of hours be completed working in an emergency room, a fire department or on an ambulance. Students will learn to recognize and treat medical conditions such as heart attacks, respiratory problems and injuries from trauma and drug overdoses.


5. Obtain additional certifications. Many paramedic programs will require students to take classes and pass certifications tests in advanced cardiac life support, and pediatric advanced life support.


6. Pass a state exam. After completing a paramedic program graduates will need to pass the licensing exam in their state. The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians also offers a national exam for paramedics.


7. Apply for a position. Fire departments employ paramedics. Contact your county and city employment office for information. Paramedics are also hired by private ambulance companies, emergency rooms and air ambulances.

Go To College In Norway

You must be fluent in Norwegian to apply to most regular degree programs.


Norwegian institutions offer a broad array of exchange programs taught in English, making them suitable places to go study abroad if you hail from an English-speaking country like the United States. Similarly, many Norwegian institutions offer degree programs taught in either English or Norwegian, making them more accommodating to international students who know little of the local language. Nonetheless, if you are interested in studying abroad in Norway, you'll still need to prepare for the disruption that comes from culture shock and the costs of moving to a new country. Fortunately, there is some consolation in that public Norwegian institutes of higher education were still offering free tuition, even to international students, as of 2012.


Exchange Programs








Be warned that participating in an exchange program is going to disrupt your studies. Even assuming that you are able to pick up the right courses to study towards your degree while abroad and that your school recognizes those courses, unfamiliarity with your destination is likely going to cause your grades to slip. Your best hope of finding a Norwegian exchange program that causes minimal disruption is to consult the appropriate office for a list of institutions associated with your school. On the other hand, if you feel that the choice of destination and the experience of studying abroad are more important than your school's recognition of academic credits, you can find a convenient list of exchange programs complete with links to host institutions on Norway's official website. Alternatively, you may also want to consider a shorter exchange program set during the summer to truly minimize the disruption to your studies.


Degree Programs


Norway has an online list of institutions and undergraduate and graduate degree programs that are taught in English at each institution. You can also follow the links to the institutions' websites to see what degree programs are offered only in Norwegian. Some institutions might let you apply for these programs even if you cannot speak Norwegian, although admission will come with additional requirements. For example, the Norwegian Embassy in the United States notes that you cannot actually begin regular degree studies at the University of Oslo if you are not fluent in Norwegian until you've undergone their one-year language program. According to the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education, you'll need at least a high school diploma plus either one year's college education with a minimum C grade or three Advanced Placement tests with minimum grade 3 if you are a U.S. student applying to an undergraduate degree program.


Completing the Application


Filling out the application form for a Norwegian degree program requires you to provide personal identification and all of the appropriate academic transcripts. For example, if you are a U.S. student applying for an undergraduate program, you'll need academic transcripts from both your high school and your college if you need that extra year to qualify. Since you are applying to become an international student, you'll also need to provide a copy of your passport and documentation to show that you can support your education in Norway financially. You may also need documentation of Norwegian language proficiency if you are applying for a program taught only in Norwegian. Confirm all necessary documents for the specific program to which you are applying since each institution has its own requirements. Missing even one document means an automatic rejection.








Last Steps


Barring a few short exchange programs that last less than 90 days in length, you'll need to apply for a student residence permit instead of a visa. If you are from the United States, you must go submit your application for a student residence permit in person at the nearest Norwegian Foreign Mission; locations can be found on the website for the Norwegian Embassy. You'll need to deposit a sum of Norwegian kroner equal to full support from the Norwegian State Education Loan Fund into a Norwegian bank account for your permit application to be successful. For 2012/2013, that sum is either 90,800 Norwegian kroner for the full year or 45,400 for one semester. As of September 2012, those sums were worth approximately $15,608 and $7,804, but exchange rates can fluctuate daily.

Applying to an art school at the collegiate level is a stressful process, but if you stay organized and establish a strong portfolio, your art should guide you to the best program. It cannot be emphasized enough: Your portfolio should contain the best work you can do. It will be the primary factor in the schools' decision-making process.


Instructions








Choosing a Major


1. If you are applying to a college-level art program, hopefully you already have some experience with art. At the undergraduate level, students typically choose a preferred medium, such as drawing, painting, digital art, sculpture or printmaking. Art history is also an option for those seeking a more traditionally academic course of study.


2. Once you have decided on your major, research art schools that specialize in that particular medium. You may also want to make a list of the other factors you find important in your college search. For example, do you want to stay within a certain geographical area? Don't waste your money paying application fees to schools you aren't really considering. Consider all possible financial-aid options, but don't bother applying to schools you know you cannot afford or are not willing to take out loans for.


3. Three to five applications should be sufficient for an undergraduate. Students applying to a graduate program may want to select a few more schools. Read over all application material, and highlight or underline the exact requirements for each program you plan on applying to.


4. When applying to art school, your portfolio will probably be the most important aspect of your application. Regardless of your chosen medium, your portfolio must show your best work on a technical level. It's your only chance to convince a college of your skill and talent. Again, read over each application carefully, as schools have different portfolio requirements. Depending on your medium, your portfolio may consist of slides of your work.


5. While GPA is not completely irrelevant, after your portfolio/slides, the next most important parts of your application will probably be your letters of recommendation and/or essay responses. It's great if you are articulate, but if you know someone in the industry who can write a letter for you, even better.


6. You will need to write an artist's statement to accompany your portfolio and application. This may count as one of your application essays, depending on the specific school's requirements. Your artist's statement should say something about why you became an artist. Consider your favorite artists or those who have most inspired your work. Try to place yourself within a long tradition of art while highlighting your own unique vision.


7. Keep all of your materials separated by school. Usually the applications come with a checklist of all requirements. Go through each checklist and make sure you haven't forgotten anything before sending it all out.

What Do You Need To Become A Judge

Judges are committed to seeking justice and enforcing laws for their jurisdiction.


Judges oversee court procedures and apply the laws that are current for their jurisdiction. These workers often set legal precedents via their rulings, and they must have a thorough knowledge of local, state and federal regulations. Industry requirements for a judgeship may take years to complete but are well worth the effort -- judges enjoy high prestige from serving on the bench, and wages for some positions top $100,000 based on 2009 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.


Bachelor's Degree


The absolute minimum education required to be a judge is a bachelor's degree. Ideally, if you want to be a judge, your bachelor's degree should be in criminal justice or a related field. As you earn your bachelor's degree, take classes such as history and government, political science, logic, public speaking, composition and economics. Your academic institution likely will require core classes not related to criminal justice, such as biology and math, as well.


Law Degree


According to the BLS, based on 2009 data, 40 states permit nonlawyers to become judges. However, prospects are much better for those who have served as attorneys, as these workers have more industry experience and are more familiar with regulations. Go to law school and obtain a law degree. During law school, take classes such as criminology, constitutional law, legal research and writing, federal litigation, mediation and dispute management, psychology and law enforcement in society. The exact courses you take will depend on the kind of law in which you are interested (e.g., civil, criminal, state, federal, bankruptcy, family). Upon graduation, you will have a Juris Doctor degree. Law school typically takes three years to complete.


Admission to the Bar and Exams


Lawyers must be members of the bar association or bar commission for the state in which they serve. Because some states require judges to be lawyers and because most judges have experience as attorneys, you'll probably need to apply for admission to the bar association following graduation from law school. Admission to the bar association requires you to take an exam. If you want a federal judgeship, you also will need to take an additional law exam administered by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.


Appointment or Election


Judges are either elected or appointed. Whether you need an election or appointment depends on the judgeship you seek. For example, a federal administrative law judge requires appointment by a federal agency, and appointments are for lifetime tenure. State judges often need nominations from a nominating commission consisting of members of the state bar and members of the public. Some trial judges are elected for four to six years, while other trial and appellate court judges serve 14 years to life. Elected judges may seek re-election to a judgeship.


Background Check


A background check is done on all those who apply to be members of a state bar association. Judges should have a clean criminal history and ideally should have a consistent employment history, as well. Credit and financial history is not quite as important as the criminal and employment histories, but it can become more important in some areas of law (e.g., bankruptcy).

The $500 scholarship is awarded annually to one recipient based on her academic and employment history as well as extracurricular activities. U.S. Army Health Professions Scholarship Program


If you're interested in a counseling psychology career in the armed services, the U.S. Army Health Professions Scholarship Program provides both two- and three-year scholarships for counseling psychology students. Get A Band Booked On The College Circuit

For most independent touring bands, live performances account for a major portion of their income. With most clubs or local venues paying very little, the lucrative college circuit offers an attractive opportunity. Unfortunately, breaking into the college entertainment circuit is often a difficult and challenging process. But for bands that make it through the gauntlet of auditions and screenings, it can mean an incredible boost to their tour schedule and income. This article will provide some basic information on the applications process and some useful strategies for getting your foot in the door.








Instructions








1. Assemble a band press kit. This package should include glossy photos, a demo CD or copy of your latest release, a band fact sheet or bio, references from club owners or promoters and any live-performance reviews that you have. Place these materials in a folder to avoid losing individual pieces.


2. Become associated with either the National Association of Campus Activities, the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities or a booking agency that is a member of these organizations. The NACA and APCA represent the major points of contact between bands and the college circuit. Although you can attempt to book gigs directly with colleges, it is a much easier process to work through the NACA or APCA. If you wish to join the NACA or APCA, you will need to submit an application for your band. This can be accomplished via the organization's website, for a fee. Check the website for current membership fees and renewal periods. An easier step is to become a client of a booking agency with ties to the NACA or APCA. Lists of booking agencies that specialize in the college market can be found on the Internet or in a number of publications available in major book stores. (See the list in Tips.) These publications break down agencies by region and booking specialties.


3. Contact several agencies that match your band's genre or specialty and inquire about becoming a client. Typically, the agency will at first ask for a press kit. They will later follow up with requests for further information or material, and possibly an in-person interview. Be patient, as this can sometimes be a long process.


4. Once you have an agent, inquire about a slot in one of the regional booking conferences presented by the NACA or APCA. These conferences offer a wonderful opportunity to showcase your band to lots of colleges at one time. It is also a great way to make contact with college buyers and let them get to know you.


5. Continue to promote your band as usual. Although you may have a booking agent, much of the promotional responsibility will fall on your shoulders. Keep playing, sending out promotional material and working with your agent to develop a working schedule of college gigs.

Teach Language To Children With Autism

Using plastic letters can help your autistic child learn language.


Autism is a developmental disability that usually presents itself within the first two years of life. The disorder impacts a number of developmental areas such as creativity or communication, both verbal and nonverbal. Communication problems vary from child to child; some autistic children are completely nonverbal, while others may speak a great deal. Those children that do speak often say things without context or content. Speech and language can be taught to autistic children, though it will probably not be to a normal ability level.


Instructions


1. Structure your day with a strict activity schedule. Children with autism need to have a day they can anticipate. Changes in schedule will often upset your child and will cause him to shut down. Schedule lessons at the same time each day.


2. Find a good study area. Some autistic children are incredibly sensitive to sound, so you'll want to find the quietest section of the house to work in. Other autistic children can see the flickering of fluorescent lights. Find a room where there is plenty of natural light so the flickering will not distract your child.


3. Demonstrate words with actions or pictures. Most autistic children are visual thinkers as opposed to auditory thinkers. If you want your child to learn words, use flash cards where there is a picture of the word or action you want her to use so she can associate visual action with auditory sounds. Acting out the word is also another method of teaching vocabulary.


4. Encourage your child to draw or do another kind of art to help learn verbal behaviors. Since most autistic children are often very artistically talented, an art project will speed learning along. Ask your child to draw the word you want him to learn.


5. Teach letters to your child by touch. Some autistic children respond better to new concepts when they can feel and handle objects associated with that concept. This is especially true of older children. Buy plastic letters and give your child each letter to hold as you teach it.








6. Respond immediately when the autistic child uses language. Sometimes autistic children do not readily understand the connection between language and communication. If your child says "cup," respond by giving her a cup. This will teach her that her words will have an impact on those around her, and can be used to get basic needs fulfilled.








7. Turn on closed captioning while watching TV. Sometimes closed captioning can help autistic children learn read by matching the printed word with the verbal cue.


8. Teach your child sign language if they are nonverbal or do not show signs of improvement with other language learning. Some nonverbal children find making gestures easier than stating words because it is a visual mode of communication.

In 2008, the highest-paying employers of interior designers were the federal government at an average annual salary of $70,900.

The states of Utah, Colorado, Massachusetts and Florida had the highest concentration of interior designers as of May 2008. Designers in these states averaged annual salaries of $54,720, $43,230, $60,370, and $47,560, respectively.


Highest-Paying Areas


As of May 2008, the areas where interior designers received the highest average annual salaries were Nevada at $67,110, New York at $65,230, the District of Columbia at $61,400, Alaska at $61,360 and Hawaii at $61,010.

Calculate How Much You Can Borrow On A Stafford Loan

The most common type of federal student loan is the Stafford loan, which is available to all students who meet the government's basic eligibility guidelines. These include being a citizen, national or permanent resident, attending an accredited school and being enrolled at least half-time. However, students can only borrow a limited amount per year. Funds can only be used to pay for school, so students cannot borrow more than the difference between other financial aid and the cost of attendance. In addition, the federal government caps a student's borrowing each year, depending on the student's year in school.


Instructions


1. Contact your school's financial aid office and ask how much your cost of attendance is for this school year. The school calculates the cost of attendance as the sum of all expenses, including tuition, fees, books and living expenses.


2. Subtract each type of financial aid you are already scheduled to receive. These include federal grants and work-study, school grants and all types of scholarships. The result is your maximum borrowing based on cost of attendance.


3. Look up your annual limit in the table on the Federal Student Aid website. Your annual limit is based on your year in school and, for undergraduates, whether you are a dependent or independent student.


4. Add up the amount you have already borrowed through Stafford loans before this school year. If you do not know your total, look it up through the National Student Loan Data System.








5. Subtract your total borrowing from $31,000 if you are a dependent undergraduate, $57,500 if you are an independent undergraduate or $138,500 if you are a graduate student. The result is the amount you are allowed to borrow before you reach your aggregate loan limit.


6. Compare the results in Steps 2, 3 and 5 and choose the least of the three to get your maximum Stafford loan for this year.

Take The Sat

Taking the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) is necessary for gaining admission to many U.S. colleges. The SAT generates a lot of fear in students, but there are several ways to be prepared for the test. Learning about the structure of the test is a good method for preparing for the test.


Instructions








1. Prepare for the test by learning a few relaxation techniques. Learn focus your energy without allowing yourself to become tense. Learn to stay relaxed and focused for the four hours it will take you to complete the test.


2. Review a SAT test preparation book, or take an SAT preparation course if possible. Study vocabulary words and math problems in particular.


3. Read the directions thoroughly for each section, so you understand how each section works. Answer the questions as quickly as possible while taking the time to double check your answers.


4. Skip over any questions that you are not sure of or that take too much time to try to solve. Skip to easier questions rather than run out of time and leave the test unfinished.








5. Go back to the skipped questions after completing each section. Eliminate as many incorrect answers as possible, crossing each out as you identify it. Chose the best possible answer from the remaining answers.


6. Take advantage of the scrap paper available to work out math problems. Ask for more scrap paper before the beginning of each section if you expect to need it. Have at least two sharp pencils ready before beginning each section.

If you play sports in high school and excel at them, you might be able to fund your college education by way of a sports scholarship. While the top high school athletes are sought out by colleges and universities and offered scholarships, other athletes can get scholarships, too. Many smaller colleges offer scholarships but don’t have the resources to recruit. It’s your job to find a way to approach them.

1. Research colleges and universities that you might be interested in attending. Keep in mind that the larger universities with major sports programs will be seeking the top athletes across the country, so if you’re not one of the top athletes in the state, look at smaller schools.


2. Call the colleges and universities to find out the names of the athletic directors and the coaches of the sport you play. Make sure you get the spelling of the names correct. Keep a list so you can keep track of whom you contact.


3. Solicit a friend or a parent to record your athletic performances. The entire game doesn’t have to be recorded, only your performances. For sports such as track and field, only the events in which you participate need to be recorded.








4. Edit your DVD recording to highlight your best moves or plays. If you’re not knowledgeable about edit the DVD, have a friend do it. You can also find editing services in the telephone book.


5. Write letters to the athletic directors and coaches at the colleges you’re interested in. Make sure you have someone check your letter for grammar. You can use the same basic letter and simply change the addressee for each submission. Note in the letter that you’re interested in playing at that specific college and that you would like to be considered for an athletic scholarship. Note also that you’ve included a DVD of your performances, and invite them to future sporting events.


6. Follow up with any letters of interest by visiting the college. Make sure you call ahead of time to let them know that you intend to come. Show enthusiasm for each college.


7. Be ready to accept the scholarship when it’s offered. Sometimes offers are rescinded, so you want to accept the offer soon after it’s made.

Federal Guidelines For Receiving Fseog Grants

One of the Title IV programs from the U.S. Department of Education, the federally funded Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, or FSEOG, essentially gives free money to students with financial need in order for them to pay college tuition and expenses. You can apply for this grant the same way as you do for other federal student aid programs: by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. Due to limited funding, however, many schools require that you submit your application by a set priority deadline.


Eligibility


Schools award FSEOG funds to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. Financial aid administrators determine your need by evaluating your Student Aid Report and expected family contribution (EFC), which are generated after you complete the FAFSA. You can only receive the FSEOG if you attend a program or school that doesn't exceed four or five years and which leads to your first academic degree. You're not eligible if you're seeking a second bachelor's degree, a graduate degree or a professional degree.


Priority








Federal guidelines mandate a priority order in which financial aid officers award FSEOG funds to eligible students. The "first selection group" consists of students who have the lowest EFCs and who are eligible for federal Pell Grants. For example, if you receive the Pell Grant and have an EFC of "0," you're part of the first selection group. After awarding grant monies to the entire first group, the "second selection group" consists of students with the lowest EFCs and who are not receiving the Pell Grant. If a student loses eligibility for the Pell Grant during the academic year prior to the disbursement date, the school must also cancel his FSEOG award.


Categorizations


Federal guidelines allow schools to create categorizations of students so that the FSEOG can be made "reasonably available" to all eligible students in each category. These categories can be based on criteria like class standing, date of application, enrollment status or a combination of other factors. In deciding the percentage of FSEOG funds to be allocated to each group, federal guidelines leave this decision up to the schools. Schools cannot develop categories for the purpose of excluding a group of students. Also, schools may not set EFC cut-off scores or award the FSEOG on a first-come, first-serve basis.


Award Amounts


During the 2010-11 academic year, you can receive a minimum FSEOG amount of $100 and a maximum of $4,000. If you indicate on the FAFSA or to the school that you're going to enroll for less than a full academic year, the school can prorate your FSEOG amount and award less than the $100 minimum. Also, students who enroll in study-abroad programs can receive up to a maximum of $4,400.








Disbursements


A school can disburse FSEOG funds to its students at its discretion. The only federal requirement is that the school must disburse funds to your student account at least once per term. The school can, however, disburse FSEOG funds to your account during the term in whatever installments it decides best meets your financial need. This typically only happens if you incur fees at an irregular rate or have other financial resources that pay your student account at different periods throughout the term.

Learn With Play Mats

Purchasing or making a play mat or rug for your child will help her learn and enjoy herself at the same time. Babies and younger children can enjoy touch-and-feel activities and older kids can learn the alphabet, the geography of the United States or play games. The possibilities are nearly endless with the lessons you can teach kids with play mats.


Instructions








1. Buy a touch-and-feel play mat that includes rings for babies to pull on, animals that they can touch and different textures that babies and toddlers can feel. You can also make your own by sewing baby toys, felt and fuzzy animals and rings kids can pull on to a heavy blanket.








2. Make a teaching play mat by using a piece of carpet, butcher paper and extra large binder clips. Cut the butcher paper to roughly the same size as the piece of carpet. Draw a map of the United States that includes all the states and clip it to the carpet with the binder clips. Your child can now hop from Arkansas to Texas. Use the butcher paper to draw up any learning lesson you choose. Write the alphabet in block letter. Number from one to 20. Put Spanish words with English translations on your learning play mat. Change your mat as often as you wish. There are many learning play mats available for sale, also.


3. Make your child's room into a game room by taping a piece of butcher paper to the floor and drawing a hopscotch board, a marble-throwing board or a checker board. Have your child draw their own maze on butcher paper. You can also use the butcher paper simply as a drawing space to help your child expand their artistic talents. If your child has one favorite game, consider a commercial play mat that will last much longer than a paper mat.
