Types Of Letters For Scholarships

Several types of letters accompany scholarship applications. Students write most of the letters, but recommendation letters are written by people close to the student who have knowledge of their skills and capabilities. Before you apply for any scholarships, understand the differences between the letters you may have to write or submit as part of the application process.


Application Letter


Scholarship committees often request applicants to submit a letter of interest with their applications. Each scholarship committee has different requirements for their interest letters, but the basic elements remain the same for most. These letters usually express the student's career goals, educational background and why she wants the scholarship. Include results-oriented sections about your work history, academic successes and other activities that relate to the scholarship's purpose and mission in your letter.


Recommendation Letters








Scholarship committees usually request recommendation letters from applicants to accompany their applications. Applicants commonly request these recommendations from favorite teachers, school administrators, work supervisors or other nonfamily members who know them well. Recommendation letters speak to the applicant's academic successes, extracurricular activities, and may also address the student's financial need. Computer Project


Due to the high frequency circuitry in a computer, these machines unintentionally radiate RF (radio frequency) energy. Computer manufacturers address this problem by including some RF shielding inside computer cases, but there is still some RF leakage. Determine the magnitude of RF energy that surrounds a computer, checking all sides, top and bottom, for RF radiation. Do this by placing a computer in the middle of a room on a small table and turn it on. Use a handheld AM radio tuned to a spot on the dial where no stations can be received. Walk around the computer and hold the radio above and underneath it. Note the volume (magnitude) of hum or buzz in the radio, indicating RF radiation. Draw a three-dimensional map showing the relative magnitude of RF radiation at various locations and distances around the computer.


Botany Project

Determine if clothing made from synthetic materials (such as polyester and rayon) hold up better than clothing made from natural fibers (such as cotton and wool). Accelerate or simulate "wear and usage" by cutting materials into strips, and place some outside, where they will be exposed to weather elements, and bury others in the ground. After several months, evaluate the test strips and compare them to a set of strips that have remained indoors at room temperatures and out of sunlight.

Pronounce Spanish Words

Vowels


1. Pronounce all vowels with one sound. There are no diphthongs in Spanish. The letter A is pronounced "ah." Say the word mal as "mahl."


2. Pronounce the vowel E as "eh." The word esta is pronounced "ehs-tah."


3. Say the letter I by saying "ee." The letters mis are pronounced "mees."


4. Say "oh" every time you see the letter O. The word mariposa is pronounced "mah-ree-poh-sah."


5. Pronounce the letter U as "oo." The word uno is pronounced "oo-no."


6. Blend vowels together that are next to each other. Pronounce the word puede as "pooeh-deh."


7. Speak the letter Y by saying "ee." The word muy is pronounced "mooee."








Consonants








8. Leave the silent letter consonants silent in Spanish, just as you would in English in most cases. There are a few exceptions. For example, the letter H is silent. Hay is pronounced "ahee."


9. Do pronounce the letters CH in Spanish just as you pronounce them in English.

Evaluating

Planning


Based on the evaluation, plan a curriculum for your tutoring sessions. For example, if the student took a sample ACT, look at the questions that the student answered incorrectly. If they all involved percentages, for example, you will know to focus on that skill during your tutoring sessions.


Motivating


Different techniques motivate different students to perform. Some students are truly motivated to attain a certain score on the ACT. If so, set that goal with them at the beginning of the tutoring sessions, and after a few months, have them retake a sample ACT. Seeing their scores improve will motivate them. Other students will need external motivation. For these students, you can suggest that they take a break when they complete five sample problems correctly. All students can be motivated through encouraging words from their tutor. Support them, sympathize with them and urge them to reach their goals.








Teaching Test-Taking Skills


Make sure that students know the details of the ACT. Explain the format of the test to them and review each type of question. Give them experience in taking the ACT by timing them as they complete sample problems.

Columns To The Grade Center

Blackboard saves you work by calculating students' grades for you.


Blackboard is an online learning tool that is the complete package for distance courses. It holds all of your course materials such as your syllabi and your lecture notes, it has a discussion board component and even hosts a virtual chat. The best feature, according to many instructors who use it, is the Grade Center. Once you set up the grading center with your assignments and their relative weights and values, Blackboard calculates the grade for you and the students can check their grades at any time. However, you need to add grading columns in for them to be calculated.


Instructions


1. Log into Blackboard and select the class to which you wish to add an assignment column, and open the Grade Center by clicking on "Evaluation" and selecting "Grade Center."


2. Click "Create Column" under the Grade Center heading. This column will allow you to add an assignment, quiz or test and then adjust the total grade to account for the added item. The column information menu should open.


3. Type a name for the column in the "Column Name" field.


Then, click "Score" under the "Primary Display" drop-down menu. This will show the student her score on an assignment.


Click the drop-down menu under "Category," then select the appropriate grouping: assignment, test, quiz or discussion. This will add the item to the correct category -- in case your categories such as quizzes are weighted.


Finally, enter the total number of points possible.


4. Assign a due date by clicking on the calendar next to the "due date" field. Then, select a time the assignment is due by clicking up or down on the time settings.


5. Click "Yes" under "Include this Column in Grade Center Calculations." This will allow the student to see his running grade total.








Then, click "Yes" under "Show this Column to Students." This will show the students their grade on this assignment.


Finally, click "Yes" under "Show Statistics (average and median) for this column to Students in My Grades" if you would like the students to be able to compare their grades to other students. Click "No" if you would like to keep the average and median provate.








6. Click "Submit" to save your settings. The column should now appear in the Grade Center.

Read A Geiger Counter







A Geiger counter detects ionizing radiation such as beta and gamma particles, and some models also detect alpha particles. The primary component of the Geiger counter is a tube filled with a gas that conducts electricity when struck by radiation. This allows the gas to complete an electrical circuit. This typically includes moving a needle and making an audible sound. Geiger counters can measure radiation in a variety of units, depending on the application.


Instructions


1. Measure radiation with sound. Geiger counters usually have a speaker that makes a "click" each time it detects a particle. This method measures alpha and beta particles in counts per minute (CPM) such that a high CPM sounds like radio static.


2. Obtain a visual display of the CPM value. Some Geiger counters also translate the CPM value into a visual representation, such as an LED display or meter.


3. Define the roentgen equivalent in rem. This is a unit of radiation dose given as r = WR where r is the radiation in rems, W is the biological efficiency of the radiation and R is the absorbed radiation in roentgens. Rem is not an exact measure of the radiation itself; rather it is a measure of the effect that radiation has on the human body.


4. Measure radiation in millirems. Geiger counters in the United States typically measure radiation in millirems (mR), since the rem is a large unit of radiation for most purposes. By comparison, the normal background radiation is about 100 mR per year.








5. Convert radiation in units of CPM to radiation in units of mR. Geiger counters commonly use a conversion ratio of 1,000 CPM = 1 mR. This conversion ratio is not exact due to the definition of the rem.

What Is A Trade School

Trade schools also are known as technical schools, vocational schools, vo-tech schools and career schools. Many of these institutions use the term "college" rather than "school." All these generic titles tend to be used interchangeably. A vocational school provides students with marketable skills necessary to acquire and perform a specific job.


Identification


A vocational school involves education beyond high school--or sometimes in conjunction with high school--focusing on specific work skills. Trade schools are considered practical rather than academic, and most award certification or associate degrees.








A wide variety of careers require trade school education. These include aircraft mechanics, automobile mechanics, dental hygienists, electricians, hairdressers, surgical technicians, veterinary technicians, welders and many others.


Benefits


Technical colleges have several advantages over university educations. They are less expensive than colleges, and many of the programs require only 2 years to complete. Class sizes are small right from the start, and students begin learning their chosen field during the first semester. Trade schools typically have very high placement rates--over 90 percent within 6 months in many cases.


Types


Some programs require apprenticeships, which can last up to 5 years, depending on the job. Apprenticeship programs combine classroom work with job training supervised by a professional at the journey level. A journeyman is the level between apprentice and master. Apprenticeships are typical for industrial electricians, millwrights, plumbers, sheet metal technicians and many other technical careers.


Other programs require internships or externships, usually lasting a semester or two. A few of these careers include criminal justice workers, electronics technicians, printing and pre-press operators, and veterinary technicians.

Important considerations are tuition and fees, opportunities for financial assistance, quality of the facilities, extra services, graduation rate and the placement rate of graduates.








Features


Many lucrative careers with great job outlooks can be acquired with a trade school education. Study For A Psychology Exam

5. Go back and look over your text a week before the exam. Study all the chapters you went over if this is for a high school class. Read through what you've highlighted if this is a college class. Reading your notes everyday makes this part easier and allows you to get more from the reading.


6. Sleep well the night before you take the exam. You want an alert mind during the exam; you won't get that if you deprive yourself of sleep the night before. Don't answer any of the questions until you've read through every question and option. Give your subconscious mind a chance to work over the test while you go over one question at a time.

Get Ready For A Middle School Dance







The key to a successful middle school dance is preparation of both the body and the mind. Middle school students worry about fitting in, so know what to expect and anticipate the high drama and emotion of a middle school dance. Teach Online Nursing

Registered nurses are the backbone of hospitals, nursing homes and other medical facilities across the United States as they lead a nursing team in providing around-the-clock care for sick or injured people. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, a 2008 report found that the U.S. could be facing a critical RN shortage of 500,000 by the year 2025. Colleges and universities are doing everything they can to help overcome this deficit by growing current nursing programs and expanding to online learning. As a nursing instructor, you might find yourself soon affected by this if you're required to teach online nursing.


Instructions








1. Learn the software being used. Many colleges and universities provide some type of training for instructors who are new to teaching classes online. If you find yourself teaching online nursing for the first time, you should make plans to attend training or meet one-on-one with the instructional technology department on your campus to learn set up and run your online classroom.


2. Upload the class information. Before the class begins, it is important that you upload the syllabus, lesson plans and assignments. Most software programs for online classes allow instructors to create start and end dates for assignments and tests, which makes them not accessible until you want them to be. You also need to include your contact information so students in your nursing class can get in touch with you when they have questions.








3. Provide lectures to students. You still need to provide the same education and training for nurses that is offered in traditional classrooms, which means that you need to find a way to provide lectures during the length of the course. You can choose to upload PowerPoint slides, notes or even videos of yourself presenting the lecture which students can complete at their own pace. If you have students doing labs or activities, try to show them what to do in a video since you aren't there to visually watch them and provide feedback.


4. Create labs students can do themselves. Some labs can be done by the student on their own, such as taking a person's blood pressure. However, for things that can't be, such as IV or catheter insertion, you need to arrange a time for the student to attend a lab setting and learn how certain medical procedures are done. This is a great time for you to see what the student has learned and retained while you provide feedback to help them.


5. Hold virtual office hours and encourage student interaction. Nursing students often have lots of questions about the information they are learning because it is complex. You may find it easier to hold virtual office hours a few times each week in which you are available in the online class chat room to answer student questions rather than respond to several emails. You can also encourage students to interact with each other by having a discussion board.


6. Arrange clinicals. While the classroom and some lab portions of nursing are able to be taught online, clinicals are something that students must do in person. You need to determine with your nursing department what type of clinicals you need to arrange for your students. Some schools allow students to do independent clincials at their own convenience through a local hospital or nursing home in their area while others arrange clinicals at a specific time and location that students must attend regardless of where they live.


7. Help students prepare for the National Council Licensure Examination. As the students near completion of the nursing program, it's important that you help them prepare for the NCLEX. This national exam is taken by nurses to get their licenses, and prospective students often look at a school's pass rate when determining whether to attend their nursing program. To get good, quality students in your future nursing classes, you need to help prepare students in your online nursing class to pass the test.

Transfer To A University To Earn A Bachelor'S Degree

Transfer students may not need to repeat courses they took elsewhere.


One of the major advantages of going to a community college is that courses you take at the college can be considered exactly the same as courses at a regular university. Because of this, many students will go to another university and have their classes counted as if they took them at the university. This is known as transferring to a university.


Instructions


1. Apply to different universities using their applications. Many universities let you apply online to their programs, however, some still use a mail-in application. Be sure to specify that you are applying as a transfer student. Contact your university to determine the proper way to apply. Be sure to list your school/college history in the application. Wait for further information to be sent to you from the universities before proceeding to the next step.








2. Request copies of official transcripts from each school you went to. Universities will ask to see official transcripts before making an acceptance decision. Be sure to have the colleges or schools mail the transcripts directly to the address given in the information the university sends to you. While waiting for acceptance letters, start thinking about which schools you want to go to more than others.


3. Choose the college you want to go to from the colleges that offer you admission into their program. Typically, this is done by visiting a website listed on the acceptance letter or mailing in a form that comes with the letter.


4. Mail the official transcript from the current college or school you are attending after your final grades have posted. Send it to the address listed in the acceptance letter from the university you decided to attend, or to a different address if they provide one.








5. Set up an appointment with a counselor at your university to determine what classes you will need to take your first semester.

Get A Ged In Knoxville Tennessee

A graduation ceremony is held for those who earn a GED in Knoxville, Tennessee.


The GED is for adults 17 years of age and older who did not complete traditional high school. In Knoxville, Tennessee, the Adult Education program offers classes in Pre-GED and GED. There is no fee for materials or instruction, but there is a cost for taking the test. There are grants available to qualified students from Knox County Schools. According to their website, students who are 17 years old will need a release of compulsory form from the last school attended and an age waiver, which must be approved by the school board and Superintendent.


Instructions


1. Select a location to attend a GED class. In Knoxville, you can attend Adult Education at Knoxville High on Fifth Avenue or Pellissippi State at the Hardin Valley Road or Magnolia Avenue campuses.


2. Call Adult Education to register for GED classes.

Attendance is required at the six hour orientation to begin GED classes with Adult Education. Two orientations are offered per week to accommodate different schedules. 3. A GED Practice Test is required.








Attend classes and take a Practice Test. In the State of Tennessee you must take a GED Practice Test before you can schedule the GED exam. The GED Practice Test is the same difficulty as the real GED but half the amount of questions and half the time, according to the Knox County Schools website.


4. Take the GED exam at an Official State Testing Center. Official State Testing Centers in Knoxville are located at Knoxville High and Pellissippi State. You will need to present the transcript of your Practice Test and a picture ID card.

American Meteorological Society Scholarships

AMS offers scholarships to study atmospheric sciences, including weather.


The American Meteorological Society (AMS) works to promote atmospheric, oceanic and hydrological sciences through supporting education in meteorology, sponsoring certification programs, publishing journals and sponsoring conferences and exhibits. AMS offers a range of scholarships for undergraduates and graduates in the fields of oceanic sciences, hydrological sciences or atmospheric sciences. Government institutions, society members or corporations sponsor many of the available scholarships.


Freshman Undergraduate Scholarships


AMS offers scholarships to high school students planning to study meteorological science in college. Applicants must be entering a college or university in the year they are applying, and must be United States citizens or permanent residents. This is a competitive scholarship and applicants will be evaluated based on academic record, recommendation letter, SAT scores and written essay. The total scholarship is worth $2,500 to $5,000 for each of the first two years. Students need to complete an application form and send the AMS copies of their high school transcripts and SAT scores and letters of recommendation from a high school teacher.


Undergraduate Named Scholarship


The AMS undergraduate named scholarship is available to students beginning their senior years in college or university in the year they apply. Applicants must be majoring in a meteorological science, must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average and must be United States citizens or permanent residents. Applicants are accepted based on undergraduate academic record and faculty recommendations. The value and number of these scholarships varies from year to year so check the AMS website for current information (see Resources).


Minority Schoarships


The AMS offers separate scholarships to high school students planning to study meteorological science in college or university and who belong to minority groups "traditionally underrepresented in the sciences." This includes Hispanic, Native American and African-American students. Students must be planning to attend a university in the year they apply. The funding for these scholarships comes from donations and varies form year to year. Applicants are evaluated based on the same academic criteria as for the freshman undergraduate scholarships.


Graduate Fellowships








AMS offers graduate fellowships sponsored by corporations and government bodies. Applicants must be starting graduate school in a meteorological science in the year they apply and must already be accepted to a graduate program. Applicants must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.25 and must be United States citizens or permanent residents. Applicants are evaluated based on undergraduate grades, Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) scores and recommendations. The award amount is a single $24,000 stipend and some travel expenses.


History of Science Fellowship


The AMS History of Science Fellowship is offered to students currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the history of meteorologic sciences. The Fellowship includes a $15,000 stipend intended to help pay for one year of Ph.D. research. Students awarded a fellowship will also be given an AMS mentor to assist them. Applicants must already be admitted into a Ph.D. program. To apply, you will need a cover letter, curriculum vita, copies of graduate and undergraduate transcripts, a detailed description of your Ph.D. research and topic and three letters of recommendation.

Prepare The Dd Form 282 As A Word Document

Mailing paper documents is becoming less and less common as more individuals and organizations move to the electronic transfer of documents. Microsoft Word, a word processor included in the Microsoft Office bundle of applications, has become one of the most popular formats for sharing documents. The DD form 282 is a printing requisition form used by branches of the military to request the use of supplies. Preparing a DD form 282 as a Word document will allow you to send the document to the recipient via email.


Instructions


1. Fill out the DD form 282.


2. Scan the form. Save the file in an easy to find place, such as your desktop or your pictures folder.


3. Open MS Word. Select "Create a New Blank Document."


4. Click on the "Insert" menu, hover your mouse over "Picture" and select "From File."


5. Navigate to the scanned form and double-click on it. Use your mouse to re-size the image by clicking and dragging on the edges of the image.


6. Click on "File," then "Save As..." Type in a name for the document, then click "Save."

Teach Adults Life Skills

Developing life skills helps ensure that people are able to function independently and responsibly. Although it's optimal to begin modeling constructive habits during childhood, adults can still benefit from being taught life skills. Empower adults to take control of their lives by presenting information without being judgmental or condescending. This commitment to inspired teaching can lead to positive outlooks and corresponding behaviors.


Instructions


1. Establish a positive rapport with adult students to retain their attention and respect. Combat negative feelings that often keep adults from seeking assistance with life skills by expressing your desire to provide both instruction and consistent support. Listen to students' concerns to formulate the best strategies for individual success. For example, some students may require more assistance with budgeting than other classmates.








2. Assign homework to reinforce that learning isn't confined to the classroom. This allows you to spend more class time actively engaged in activities. Get creative with the assignments to encourage compliance. Suitable activities include practicing for role-playing sessions, creating oral presentations and learning important budget calculations.


3. Develop interactive lesson plans. Explain that learning life skills requires active listening and participation. Challenge students to perform tasks that demonstrate understanding such as performing mock job interviews, or making meal plans based on dietary or budget restrictions. Including theses demonstrations and role-playing scenarios helps reinforce important messages and allows you to gauge individual progress.








4. Immerse students in real-world scenarios to see how they respond to different situations. Seek assistance from outside agencies to give students the skills and confidence to handle personal affairs. Suitable trips include visits to grocery stores, car lots and employment offices. Assign projects that build upon classroom lessons and test commitment to active learning.


5. Invite guest speakers to share useful tips with the class. Suitable lecturers include loan officers, college recruiters and local entrepreneurs. Schedule group activities during the visits to keep students actively engaged. Encourage guests to bring visual aids, which may include pamphlets, video clips and quick-reference guides.

Opening a story of any kind can be a challenge; however, it is particularly true when opening a record store. Let's face it --- people are fickle about their music. If you are not diverse in your musical offerings and don't possess a wealth of knowledge about a range of musical styles, chances are you won't be quite as successful. Here are some tips to help you open a record store and maintain a loyal clientele.

1. Obtain financing to launch your new business, particularly if you plan to open a retail record store. After all, this is a lot different from selling records to your friends from your basement. There are employees to be hired, operating costs, investments in musical inventory and more. Like any other store, you need to obtain financing of some sort, usually in the form of a business loan, to have the cash up front for your myriad of investments. You can also ask for gifts or donations from family and friends. If you go this route, set up payment plans if you are getting a loan from someone you know. You do not want to sour a relationship over money loaned to start your new venture. You should also have a sound business plan to show potential investors so they know that they will eventually recoup their money. In fact, most reputable lenders will require a business plan to be filed before they will approve you for a loan.


2. Once you have received financing, scout a location. Remember, start out small. Don't try to purchase a large space in the most expensive part of town. The good thing about a record store is that with the right inventory, customers will come to you, no matter what your location. You need something large enough to comfortably hold your inventory, but small enough to be financially manageable as a new business owner. The store should be set up to be spacious enough to allow customers ample room to peruse your inventory. If you open a record store, you might consider decorating in a musical theme, with your favorite rock posters or pictures adorning the walls, or classic records serving as decorative items and a slew of music-oriented merchandise for sale in one part of the store.








3. Invest in a sound inventory. The music you sell will make or break your record store. The most successful record stores are those that sell a little bit of everything --- from mainstream pop to underground rock and rap to cheesy jazz standards to that hard-to-find Jimmy Hendrix Greatest Hits LP. You can purchase from record companies and manufacturers, but you may also consider spending time perusing garage sales, thrift shops and personal collections to find those rare, but popular, CDs, tapes or records. That will set you apart from the big box competition like Best Buy or Target. The more diverse your musical offerings, the more diverse --- and numerous --- your clientele will be.


4. Educate yourself on all types of music. If the new Ludacris CD hits the streets and a customer comes in asking for it, it does not look good if you scratch your head and say "Who?" As the owner of a record store, you will be expected to be the authority on all things music, particularly the latest and greatest bands, acts, etc. Even if you do not like it, listen to different types of music; catch up on the Billboard Chart rankings and familiarize yourself with the Top 100 acts. This will bring about loyalty and appreciation from your customers.

University of Heidelberg


On the European continent there are a number of well-respected medical schools that are also rated highly by the Times Supplement. Highest on that list outside of the U.K. is Germany's University of Heidelberg. Germany has a long, rich educational tradition stretching back as far as the European Enlightenment. Write A Business Correspondence







As an employee of a business or owner of your own company, it is important to learn write business correspondence to remain professional when communicating with clients and co-workers. Two common pieces of business correspondence are business letters and memos. Letters are usually reserved for outside communications, while business memos are intra-office documents.


Instructions


Business Letter


1. Place the full date at the top of the letter, spelled out with the month, day and year (for instance, March 25, 2010).


2. Go down a line and enter the recipient's full address. Include the contact's full name, title and company name.


3. Skip a line after the recipient's address and enter a salutation. Type in the contact's title and last name. Enter "Dear Sirs or madams" or "To Whom It May Concern" if you don't have a specific name.


4. Type in the body of your business letter. Write block paragraphs of three or four sentences for readability.


5. Skip another line and close the letter with "Sincerely" or "Regards" then your full name (first and last). Go down another line and type in "Enclosures" at the bottom of the letter if you are including other documents with this letter.


6. Print the business letter on professional letterhead that lists your company's contact information across the top.


Business Memo








7. Create the header of your memo. List "TO:," "FROM:," "DATE:" and "SUBJECT:" down the page, capitalized, with each entry on its own line. Fill out the corresponding information related to your memo.


8. For the subject, write the purpose of the memo. Be specific. For instance, "New Marketing Requirements in Regard to the ABC Program."


9. Elaborate on the subject of your memo, as described in the last memo, in the body (leave a line between the body and the purpose). Reference any attachments to the memo or other sources of information for the reader to reference in the body.


10. Close the letter with a call to action or clear discussion of what you want the reader to do in response to this new information. For instance, "Register for the new program at registerherenow.com." Include information about the sender or point of contact in the closing including the name, phone number and email address.

Learn Latin Programs

While Latin is not a commonly spoken language, learning Latin is an excellent basis for improving English grammar and understanding Romance languages, including French, Spanish and Italian. Latin is also a useful tool for historians, scholars and academics. Others who may have an interest in learning Latin include choral performers and those with a religious motivation. Certifications are available, and this may be an ideal option for those in the academic community who require proof of reading competence. Cambridge Online Latin offers rigorous and thorough instruction in Latin grammar and vocabulary. The well-known Rosetta Stone also offers an on-line Latin curriculum via subscription. Certifications are not available, and the course methodology is much like any other spoken language course. The advantage to Rosetta Stone online is its portability. You can easily access the program from any computer with an Internet connection.


Free Latin Courses








There are several options to learn Latin without a large financial investment. Latin is actually one of the easiest languages to learn on your own. The best of these courses is produced by Britain's National Archives. You can work through both a beginner and advanced course and need no previous knowledge of Latin. This course is focused on medieval Latin, but the skills acquired can be applied to classical Latin as well. This course uses classic Latin learning methods, focused primarily on reading skill, rather than spoken application.


Computer Programs to Learn Latin


Latin language programs range from affordable to quite costly. Byki produces Latin learning software available on CD or by download. You can purchase Rosetta Stone programs in levels one, two and three to master the language. Rosetta Stone offers the more comprehensive Latin program curriculum. Do keep in mind that both Rosetta Stone and Byki rely upon the spoken language-style instruction used when teaching other languages and may be less useful for academics in need of the skills to read Latin documents. Important words and phrases are taught, with less of a focus on grammar and reading skills.








Latin on Paper


There are a number of books, packaged curriculum programs and other resources available to teach Latin to adults and children. Learning Latin young can improve a variety of skills and test scores, including vocabulary, grammar and even math problem solving. One curriculum, Minimus, aimed at elementary students, relies upon a little mouse who lives on Hadrian's wall and teaches Latin through primary documents. Programs aimed at home-schoolers include both secular and more religious options; however, consider your or your child's learning style first and foremost when choosing the right curriculum for your needs. The other computer options listed may also be a good choice for older children or teens interested in Latin.

Use A Punnett Square To Do A Monohybrid Cross

A Punnett square is a tool that can help to understand how certain traits are passed on from parents to offspring. It is named after Reginald Punnett, an English geneticist. In this article you will learn use the Punnett square to do a monohybrid cross; that is, to figure out how ONE trait is passed on from parents to offspring.


Instructions


Drawing a Punnett Square


1. Determine what trait you would like to use for your example, such as B = brown eyes; b = blue eyes. Remember that a gene has two alleles (e.g., BB, Bb, or bb).


2. With your pen or pencil, draw a medium-sized square and a cross inside it on your piece of paper so you have four small boxes next to each other.








3. Write the gene(s) of one parent across the top of the Punnett square and the gene(s) of the other parent along the left side of it.


4. Fill in the Punnett square by writing the letter above and beside each box in each individual box. (The capital letter goes first followed by the lowercase letter.)








5. List the combination of genes you got as a result to figure out the probability of the offspring inheriting that particular trait. Let's use BB and bb as an example, with one parent having brown eyes and the other having blue eyes. The combination we get by using the Punnett square is BB, Bb, Bb and bb. This means there is a 25% probability the offspring will be homozygous with brown eyes, a 50% probability of heterozygous with brown eyes and a 25% probability of homozygous with blue eyes.

Emory Law School Requirements

Emory Law School is listed as the 22nd best law school in the county in U.S. News and World Report's 2010 rankings. Each year, this Atlanta school receives more than 4,500 applications for a first-year class of about 235 students. The school only admits full-time students who begin in the fall term to its juris doctor program, according to the school website.


Admission Requirements


Interested applicants must complete the application form; take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and submit a Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS) report to the school. Two letters of recommendation are required for admission and students should not send more than two. Students must send the letters through the LSDAS, which sends a report directly to the law school. LSDAS reports include student background information; copies of transcripts from schools attended; letters of recommendation; LSAT scores and a personal statement. Emory requires personal statements to determine writing skills and to learn what in an applicant's experience will make him a successful lawyer. Students also must submit a nonrefundable application fee of $70. To receive full consideration for admission, students are advised to take the LSAT no later than the December test date. Before beginning school, students must also submit a recent medical history report to the Emory University Student Health Service. Students cannot register for classes until this report is on file, according to the school website.

Degree Requirements


To graduate, students must complete 90 credit hours. Students also must complete first-year and specific upper-level courses. Upper-level courses include Evidence, Business Association and Trial Techniques. A student a must remain in good standing to receive his or her degree. To be in good standing, a student has to have a cumulative GPA of 2.25 after the completion of her second term, or the term in which 25 semester hours have been completed. If a student does meet this minimum GPA, she is ineligible to continue. This student can petition the law faculty through the Academic Standings Committee for readmission on probation. During probation, a student must take at least 10 credit hours and earn a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25. Students who do not fulfill these requirements will not be granted a degree, according to the school website. Degree requirements must be completed within seven years of entrance into the school.


Residence Requirements


Students must enroll for six semesters with at least 10 residence hours each semester. To receive full-time status, students must enroll for at least 12 credits each semester. Trial Techniques and Clinics, which are graded as pass/fail, count towards the semester's residence requirements. Graded courses also count toward the residence requirement. However, Audit Hours; Ungraded Journals and Moot Court do not, according to the school website.

What is the Chemical Name for Vioxx?


Vioxx was a prescription NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) that was distributed by Merck & Co. and was extremely popular and widely prescribed. In recent times, however, Merck has voluntarily withdrawn Vioxx from the market and ceased its manufacture of the drug. This was due to studies that indicated that Vioxx was statistically linked to cardiac problems in those who took large doses of it for an extended period of time.


Identification


Vioxx has a chemical name of "rofecoxib." This chemical name is much lesser-known, of course, than the name "Vioxx" which was a trade name that was developed by Merck & Co. to sell the drug. Its IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) name is "4-(4-methylsulfonylphenyl)-3-phenyl-5H-furan-2-one."


Function








Rofecoxib is a falls into a category of NSAID called COX-2 inhibitors. Basically speaking, there is a substance known as cyclooxygenase (abbreviated as COX) found within the human body that has two unique manifestations. These two forms of COX are referred to as COX-1 and COX-2. The function of COX-1 is irrelevant, but COX-2 is used to synthesize certain compounds within the body that help us to feel pain. Vioxx and other COX-2 inhibitors work to diminish pain by interfering with COX-2 and its functionality.


Significance


The significance of COX-2 inhibitors such as Vioxx is the fact that they inhibit only COX-2, not COX-1 as well. This is important because NSAID's that interfere with COX-1 and COX-2, such as naproxen, can cause ulcers in patients with prolonged usage. This is why VIoxx was so widely and enthusiastically prescribed to those suffering from chronic pain.


History


Unfortunately, though, it eventually became apparent to Merck & Co. that its wonder drug, Vioxx, was an actively ticking time bomb. This is because Vioxx use, in high doses and over extended periods of time, is linked to cardiovascular problems. It was particularly suspected that prolonged use of Vioxx could cause heart attacks. Because of the studies which indicated this, Vioxx was voluntarily removed from the market by Merck on September 30, 2004.


Considerations








While Vioxx is no longer available, there are many similar drugs which are. There are many other different types of COX-2 inhibitors that may be able to help those who were aided by Vioxx, but which do not seem to carry with them the same risk of cardiovascular issues. Some of the most popular types of COX-2 inhibitors on the market today are Arcoxia, Celebrex and Bextra.
