The certified nursing assistant (or CNA) license is a state-issued document. In every state CNAs must be licensed. The license is proof that you have successfully met the state's educational and training requirements. 3. Go the state agency's website. Locate the appropriate form. In many cases the form are located under a category such as "Licensure and Certification," "Application Packets" or "Form Downloads." The form may say "Name Change/Duplicate License/Certificate Request" or something similar.


4. Download the request form. Provide all the requested information. Include the appropriate fee. The fees may vary by state. Mail the form to the address specified on the form. Once your request is processed you'll receive your duplicate license in the mail.

There are many scholarships available to students at universities in British Columbia. Some of these scholarships are provided by British Columbia schools, while others are provided by provincial and national organizations. There are scholarships in British Columbia for students possessing any of these and other qualifications: high academic achievement, volunteer experience and demographic under-representation. To determine which scholarships you are eligible for, you must review your resume and transcript for accomplishments that will make you stand out to scholarship committees.


Instructions


1. Determine your grade point average. Log on to your student self-service account and click on "Grades" or "Term Grades" in the academic information menu. If your grade point average is listed there, write it down. If it is not listed, add up the total quality points you received from each of your courses and divide this number by the number of courses.


2. Look up scholarship databases. Your school's scholarship information can be found on your school's website, generally under the heading for "Student Financial Aid." Visit the StudentAid BC and BC Scholarships websites for scholarships specifically for students from British Columbia. Visit the Canada scholarships website for information on national scholarships. Note the scholarships that have acceptance criteria that match your qualifications.








3. Prepare resumes and cover letters for each scholarship you want to apply for. Your cover letter should be different for each scholarship, as it must refer to the institution and/or committee head by name. Most of your resumes can be identical; however, they will have to be modified for scholarship committees that request information beyond what is normally required.


4. Contact four to five people and ask them for permission to include them on your reference list. Your references should be people who know you well and who have dealt with you in an academic or professional context. Good references include professors, supervisors and volunteer coordinators.


5. Write a personal essays for scholarship committees that request them. Write a different essay for each scholarship, as your personal essay must mention the qualities you have that align with each scholarship's stated ideals. A scholarship essay should be 500-800 words in length, with an introduction, several paragraphs and a conclusion. Keep in mind that British Columbia schools are known to be progressive in character, placing a high emphasis on creativity and social awareness.


6. Fill out the scholarship application form. Most scholarship-granting organizations in British Columbia allow you to fill out the form online. If you are unsure whether it is safe to give out personal information over the Internet to the organization, check the StudentAid BC website. If the organization is listed, it is legitimate. Information such as your social insurance number and mailing address likely will be required on the form.








7. Send your information -- resume, cover letter, transcript and essay -- to the scholarship committees before their stated deadlines. If you are allowed to apply online, upload the information to the scholarship website or email it to the committee as an attachment. If you have to send your application in the mail, send it a month before the deadline in a large envelope.

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is one of the largest contributors to African-American education in the United States. UNCF has awarded more than $100 million in tuition assistance since 1985. To be eligible for a Thurgood Marshall Tuition Grant, students must be U.S. citizens enrolled in master's degree programs and be of African American, Hispanic or Native American heritage. What Kind Of Education Do You Need To Be A Heart Surgeon

A heart surgeon often uses complex mechanical techniques, such as endoscopy.


A heart surgeon -- professionally referred to as a cardiac or cardiothoracic surgeon -- performs operations on the heart, pulmonary system, esophagus and blood vessels in the chest cavity. These operations include the replacement of heart valves, bypasses of blocked coronary arteries, the installation of a pacemaker and aortic surgery. The surgeon diagnoses afflictions, performs surgeries and monitors the efficacy of a procedure in the post-operative phase. The high level of skill and knowledge demanded by the role require many years of education and training.


High School


Because becoming a heart surgeon requires attendance at college and medical school, a good grade point average in a high school diploma or general education diploma program is essential. The better a candidate's performance at high school, the better his chances of securing a place at his preferred college. All-around academic performance is ideal, although the sciences, mathematics and English are particularly relevant to his future career. A candidate may also wish to undertake of course in CPR or first aid during his spare time.


College


A candidate can major in any subject at college; however, many potential heart surgeons choose to major in one of the science subjects -- biology, physics or chemistry. All candidates should take courses in those subjects, as well as calculus, English, computer sciences and any pre-med courses offered by the educational institution.








Medical School


In the final year of college, a candidate should sit for the Medical College Admission Test administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges. She should then apply for a place at a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. A course at medical school lasts four years and teaches the candidate all aspects of general medicine. A candidate should expect to undertake classroom and laboratory work alongside practical training in a clinical environment.


Surgery Residency


Having graduated from medical school, a future heart surgeon must undertake a residency in general surgery. This is an employment position within a medical or clinical environment that involves further training. A general surgery residency usually lasts for five years and a candidate will rotate around different surgery specialities, including cardiothoracic surgery, working under the supervision of qualified health practitioners. A candidate will also perform further theoretical research.


License


A candidate needs to be licensed by the state he wishes to work in to be able to practice as a surgeon. Licensure typically involves submission of medical school results, evidence of surgical residency and written examinations. A candidate may also need to sit for examinations in jurisprudence. A licensed practitioner may also wish to apply for certification by the American Board of Surgery. While not legally obligatory, this certification -- gained by passing an ABS-administered exam -- demonstrates to employers a high level of training, as the ABS is considered a standard bearer for the profession.


Heart Surgery Residency








The final step to becoming a heart surgeon is to undertake a residency in cardiothoracic surgery. Like a general medical residency, this is an employed position working under the instruction of a qualified heart surgeon. Typically, a residency lasts between two and three years. At the end of the residency, a candidate must pass the certification examination administered by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Teach Your Child To Write Their Name In Kindergarten

In kindergarten your child will learn the fundamentals of spelling, including name writing. When a child can successfully print his own name, it brings praise from the teacher and builds your child's self-esteem. You can help your child be ready for name writing in kindergarten by following a few simple measures at home.


Instructions


1. Teach your child basic writing concepts. These will help him get ready for letter formation and lined paper. Explain the directional terms of right and left, up and down, top, middle and bottom. Help your child distinguish between rounded and straight lines.


2. Print the letters in your child's first and last names. Help him practice them one at a time in a fun way. For example, encourage your child to print the letters with his index finger in the air or in a sand box. Teach him that when he writes his name, the first letter is always a capital, and the remaining letters are lowercase.


3. Guide letter formation. Hold your child's hand at first to demonstrate proper name writing mechanics. Emphasize that letters are formed from top to bottom. Sound out each letter in your child's name while he is writing it.


4. Show your child hold a pencil. Use a thick writing instrument such as an oversized pencil or crayon. These afford little hands better control. Proper form is important. It is difficult to unlearn poor pencil posture.


5. Introduce unlined paper. Ask your child to print his name several times. With each repetition ask him to reduce the size of the letters. This will provide practice in controlling the pencil and ready him for lined paper.


6. Transition to lined paper. Ask your child to practice printing his name inside the lines. Encourage him to leave adequate space between his first and last names. In general, kindergarten teachers want children to leave a space equal to two child-sized finger widths between words.

Writing A Paper Begin An Opening Statement

The opening statement is the most important, and often the most difficult part of essay writing. An effective opening statement needs to be informative and interesting. It's important to grab your reader's attention while informing them of the purpose of the piece. A few simple tips can help you write a good opening statement, and the rest of the paper will fall into place.


Instructions


1. Hook your reader's attention with an interesting fact or statistic. For example: "China is home to over 1.3 billion people." Stating a statistic will arouse curiosity, and encourage the reader to continue.


2. Try posing a question to the reader. This method is effective in persuasive pieces, since it forces the reader to consider a point of view they may not have considered before. For example: "Many people believe it is more costly to house inmates for life than to execute them, but is that really the case?"








3. Be descriptive. A vivid description can keep the reader interested. For example: "The vast rolling meadows of the countryside are aglow as the sun sets on West Tennessee."








4. Try stating a blunt opinion. A brief, brash, opinionated statement will instantly snatch your reader's attention. For example: "The average citizen having access to automatic weapons was not what the founding fathers had in mind when the Second Amendment was written."

Fastest Way To Become A Lawyer

Even the "fast track" to becoming a lawyer will take between five and six years.








The road to becoming a licensed attorney is long and challenging regardless of which path you take. Traditionally, in order to become a lawyer, a person must graduate from college with a four-your degree and from an ABA-accredited law school, and pass the bar exam in the jurisdiction in which he wishes to practice. For most people, this process takes between seven and 10 years to complete. There are some people who believe that they can take a "fast track" to becoming a lawyer by following an alternative track to the bar. In a few states, you are not required to attend traditional law school in order to sit for the bar exam. However, most of these programs require four or more years of "apprenticeship" with a licensed attorney or judge on top of a college degree, plus the time that it will take you to learn the information that you will need to know for the bar exam. In all, the "fast track" alternative method will take at least 10 years, and that's if you pass the bar exam on your first attempt. Therefore, the fastest way to becoming a lawyer is the traditional law school, but with a twist.


Instructions


1. Attend a college that offers a "3/3 program." These programs allow you to start law school during your last year of college. Most law schools that are part of a larger university system will offer these programs to their students. A candidate will need to have exceptional credentials in the form of undergraduate grades and a Law School Aptitude Test (LSAT) score. Inquire at your school's admissions office to find the specific criteria for your school's "3/3" program.








2. Take summer courses during law school in order to complete required courses sooner. Some law schools will allow students to graduate once they have completed all required coursework for their degree. Unfortunately, the majority of ABA law schools mandate that you must be enrolled at least part-time for 3 years in order to earn a Juris Doctor degree. However, even if you must stick around for the full three years, taking summer classes will allow you to take a much lighter course load--you may be able to get away with taking only one course each semester of your third year.


3. Use your extra time to get a head start on studying for the bar exam. The more time that you can dedicate to bar study, the greater your chances of passing on your first attempt. Most students end up taking a full course load during their third year, in which case, they will need to wait until May or June to start studying for the July bar exam. If you can start studying in January, you will dramatically decrease the odds that you will fail the exam and be forced to waste an additional six months to a year studying and retaking the bar exam. Once you have passed the bar in your jurisdiction, you will be eligible to be sworn in as a licensed attorney. By following this variation on the traditional path to becoming an attorneys, it is conceivable that you could become an attorney in five to six years as opposed to seven to 12 years.

Manage Study Time In College

Books


Managing your study time in college can get a bit complicated. You have more deadlines, harder work and a hectic schedule, not to mention you also need time to sleep, socialize and shower. However, you can still excel in school if you take a proactive approach to studying. If you’re not sure where to start, here are some things that you can do to get yourself on the right track.


Instructions


1. Use a schedule organizer. As soon as you hear that you have a study session or an assignment due, put it in your schedule organizer. When you see it all set out in front of you, you’ll be less likely to forget that an assignment was due and you’ll be able to manage your study time better.


2. Study where you won’t have distractions. If you know that studying in your dorm room is going to distract you, go to the library. You won’t be able to manage your time effectively if you’re wasting your time with unimportant things.


3. Shut off the communication gadgets. While this may seem like the unthinkable, it is necessary. There is no sense in going to an area where you can study effectively if you bring more distractions with you. Turn off your cell phone and your instant messenger service on your computer. You’ll be able to study a lot better if you don’t have other people trying to talk to you.


4. Take a break. Sounds counterproductive right? The chances that you’ll be able to study for three hours straight while staying sharp and retaining all of the information is slim. Take a 15-minute break per hour to stretch, take your eyes away from what you’re studying and think about something else. When you go back, chances are you will feel fresher and be more alert.


5. Start your work immediately after it is assigned. You may be tempted to go watch your favorite show or take a nap, but when you start your work right after it is assigned you’ll have a head start. The directions for the assignment as well as the lesson are still fresh in your mind. Take the time to at least write out an outline or a summary of what you plan on doing. When you sit down the second time to do the work, you’ll already know the direction you want to head in.

Houston Colleges With Soccer

Women's soccer programs are more common than men's teams.


Many schools across the United States field college soccer teams. Because it is not a major revenue producing sport, there is some scholarship money available, but not as much as in other sports. Women's soccer teams are more common than those with men's teams. In the city of Houston, Texas, there is one school that has both men's and women's soccer, while two other colleges have only women's programs.


Rice University


Rice University's women's soccer program began in 2001, under the direction of the only coach it has ever had, Chris Huston. The Owls won the Conference USA title in 2005 and have reached the NCAA Tournament a number of other times as an at-large team. Huston was also the founding coach for the team across town at the University of Houston. Rice does not have a men's soccer team. Through the 2009 season, its ninth, Rice had compiled a record of 82-64-10.

The University of Houston women's soccer program started in 1998 under current Rice coach Chris Huston. The Cougars play in Conference USA and as of 2010 were coached by Susan Bush. Houston's women's soccer team had a record through the end of the 2009 season of 83-108-15. The Cougars play their home games at the school's Robertson Stadium. The team does hold walk-on tryouts each year and it also hosts an annual soccer camp in the summer for young soccer players. The university does not have a men's soccer team.

The men's soccer team at Houston Baptist University is a Division I program that began competing in the sport in 1979. The team has an all-time record of 126-73-11. The coach as of the 2010 season was Steve Jones, who was entering his fifth year at the helm for the Huskies. Medicaid Eligibility Requirements

Medicaid is a health insurance plan provided by the government. In general, uninsured individuals with low incomes are eligible for Medicaid. However, specific Medicaid requirements vary from state to state. Payments of health-care costs for those who are uninsured are either made in full or in part. However, no money is issued directly to the patient. Medical providers are reimbursed for the services they provide to Medicaid recipients at a specified rate.


Income


Medicaid coverage is available to U.S. citizens and immigrants who are legally admitted to the United States. The income of eligible Medicaid recipients must be below the poverty line, which is updated each year by the federal government. For example, children under age 6 and pregnant women with a family income that is at or below 133% of the federal poverty level are eligible for Medicaid. When determining if one's income meets the criteria for Medicaid, the number of members in the household is considered.








Disability








Disabled and blind individuals with limited resources and income can apply for Medicaid. Individuals who reside in a nursing home or who are terminally ill and live in a hospice may also be eligible. Although individuals aged 65 and over may be covered under Medicare, this does not preclude them from receiving Medicaid as well if their income meets the criteria set forth by the state.


Age


Individuals with a limited income who have one or more children that are 18 years of age or younger can apply for Medicaid. Although a parent may not be eligible for Medicaid, a child's eligibility does not depend on his or her parent's eligibility. However, newborns are provided coverage for at least the first year of life if they continue to reside with their mother and if their mother was receiving Medicaid before they were born. Coverage is provided by many states up to the age of 21.


Supplemental Security Insurance


Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI) is a governmental program that provides benefits to individuals who have a limited income due to their inability to engage in substantial gainful activities. Individuals receiving SSI must meet certain criteria, which are similar to what is required for Medicaid. Specifically, disabled, blind and individuals over 65 may be eligible. Therefore, Medicaid recipients also receive SSI benefits in most states.


Residency


Individuals who reside in a medical facility, such as a nursing home, can still receive Medicaid even if they still own their former residence. However, the county Department of Social Services notifies such individuals that a lien may be placed on the property. According to the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) of 1993, states are permitted to seek reimbursement for the cost of medical services covered by Medicaid upon the death of a Medicaid recipient. This process is referred to as estate recovery.

Problems With A Balanced Scorecard

Balanced Scorecard is a method of implementing a metrics system which aligns activities with the vision and strategy of the organization in a way that fosters action. It was created by Drs. Robert Kaplan and David Norton as a method of "performance measurement framework that added strategic non-financial performance measures ... to give managers and executives a more 'balanced' view of organizational performance." (Balanced Scorecard Institute)


Balanced Scorecard Principles








According to Kaplan and Norton, organizations should be viewed from four angles:


1. Learning and Growth Perspective- relates to employee training and development.


2. Business Process Perspective- refers to the internal business processes which allow managers to recognize if the business is running well.


3. Customer Perspective- understands the customer and his needs.


4. Financial Perspective- implements timely and accurate funding data


Statistics


It is reported that over 50% of Fortune 1000 firms now use the Balanced Scorecard methodology and an estimated 85% of organizations have adopted a performance measurement initiative of some form. Despite the prevalence of implementing Balanced Scorecard solutions, it still has problems.


Misconceptions








While there is nothing inherently wrong with the Balanced Scorecard system, some managers view it as a "quick fix" system to implement that will solve the problems of the business. Businesses will fail when they neglect to realize that Balanced Scorecard is an evolving process which should be carried out over the long term.


Problems


In a 2006 article for BPM Institute, Steven Smith outlined five of the major problems with using the Balanced Scorecard system:


1. Poorly defined metrics- "A system that has sloppy or inconsistently defined metrics will be vulnerable to criticism by people who want to avoid accountability for results."


2. Lack of efficient data collection and reporting- companies should prioritize performance indicators and allocate research money accordingly allowing for the most vital information to be reported.


3. Lack of formal review structure- "Scorecards work best when they are reviewed frequently enough to make a difference."


4. No Process Improvement Methodology- instead use time-tested process improvement methodologies in conjunction with problem solving methodologies.


5. Too much internal focus- consider beginning with external focus and then reflecting on the business' strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. (BPM Institute)


Considerations


Focusing on one measurement of business success can be detrimental to the company. Companies should employ a comprehensive view of measurements, including "an equal emphasis on outcome measures (the financial measures or lagging indicators), measures that will tell us how well the company is doing now (current indicators) and measures of how it might do in the future (leading indicators)."

Why Study Leadership Management Styles

How do you lead your employees?


To understand leadership and management styles, it's important to understand the difference between managers and leaders. How a manager interacts with subordinates is considered that person's management style. Leadership style refers to how a specific person motivates others. While the most effective managers are leaders, not all leaders are managers.


Types of Management Style


The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York has identified four main types of management styles: autocratic, permissive, democratic and directive. A leader or manager who has an autocratic style prefers to make all decisions without allowing input from workers. The permissive manager allows workers greater flexibility and freedom in the work environment. A democratic leader allows employees to have input during the decision making-process, while a directive manager tells employees exactly do their jobs. In some cases the styles may combine. For example, a permissive-autocratic leader will make all decisions regarding what outcomes are expected, while allowing workers the freedom to decide for themselves how those outcomes will be reached. On the other hand, a directive-democratic leader will allow input from employees, but will then maintain close supervision over their work.








Significance








It's important to study leadership and management styles in order to understand how the various styles can work, or fail to work, together. While no one leadership or management style is effective in every situation, there's often a specific style that will be most effective in a given situation. Managers must understand the individual styles, as well as when each particular one is most effective. They must be willing to adjust their style to fit the situation, rather than expecting the situation to change to make their favorite style more effective. For example, a highly motivated employee, capable of working efficiently alone, will likely be demotivated by an autocratic or directive leader. Meanwhile, a worker who has difficulty staying on task may be more motivated to get the job done under the direction of an autocratic leader.


What's Your Style?


Leaders and managers alike must seek to understand their own personal styles before they can hope to determine the best way to interact with subordinates. One way to determine your individual leadership style is through the use of a personality test, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The 16 possible style types, according to the Myers-Briggs theory, explain how a person prefers to interact with others, as well as their individual decision-making patterns. When managers and leaders understand both their own styles, and how best to interact with other styles, they can then communicate effectively with employees.


Turning Managers into Leaders


While some people may be born leaders, managers must often be taught to lead. Managers must not expect their employees to do as they're told simply because the manager holds a position of authority.They should learn from leaders, who inspire their workers to follow their example. Stephen R. Covey, a leading business theory researcher and author, says, "Leadership is not position. It's moral authority. Moral authority comes from following universal and timeless principles like honesty, integrity and treating people with respect." Managers will gain the moral authority to lead effectively only by setting the example they wish their workers to follow.

How Far In Advance Should I Apply For Student Loans

Complete student loan applications as early as possible, but gather financial documents first.


College educations aren't cheap; many students spend thousands of dollars paying for tuition, books, housing, transportation and student fees. Because students can rarely cover these expenses with out-of-pocket savings, federal financial aid can help meet those obligations. Federal financial aid incorporates student loans, grants (which don't have to be paid back) and work-study allocations. It's crucial to keep track of financial aid time lines to avoid missing deadlines. Apply for student loans far in advance to avoid missing out on available funds.


FAFSA


If you're applying for federal financial aid, complete the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The form gathers together financial information from you -- and your parents, if you're determined to be a dependent student -- to calculate what student loans you may qualify for. The government issues new FAFSA forms each year, so you won't be able to apply for student loans more than one year in advance of the academic year for which you plan to attend college.


Documents


Students can begin filing FAFSA forms beginning January 1, but you shouldn't apply until you've gathered key documents together to accurately and effectively complete the application. It's possible to correct errors made on the FAFSA application, but this slows your processing and could result in the delay of your student loan disbursement. Financial documents that will help you complete the FAFSA include tax returns, bank statements, paycheck stubs and other paperwork that describes your savings, earnings and assets.


School Choice


Don't apply for student loans until you've identified the schools for which you plan to attend. It's not necessary to commit to one particular school before applying for financial aid, but you should list schools that you've applied to or are considering applying to because the government incorporates your school's cost of attendance when calculating awards. On the FAFSA, you'll need to list your school name and code for the application to be processed effectively.


Time Line


Start looking for scholarships and grant possibilities in October of the year before you plan to attend college, since this can reduce the amount of student loans you'll need to take out. In December, contact colleges where you're considering applying and ask for their specific financial aid forms. These will be filed separately from your FAFSA. Complete your FAFSA form in January, retaining copies for your records. In February, contact your colleges to ask about available state aid, since state grants can also reduce the amount of student loans you'll need to take out. In March, watch in the mail or your email inbox for your Student Aid Report; this documents your eligibility for financial aid. By April, you'll want to return all financial aid forms to the college of your choice; submit student loan applications by May.


Private Loans


Applying for private loans to cover school costs is typically quicker and easier than completing federal student aid forms; however, government aid is usually your first choice since interest rates can be much lower than bank loans. Your private loan application might be reviewed within two days; schools must certify your application within 10 business days. Funds may be dispersed to your school within seven to 12 business days after completing loan paperwork.

You can start your Broadway career early by attending a professional musical school in New York City.

Why Is There A Bubble On My Eye

Eye cysts are typically harmless.


The appearance of a small clear or fluid-filled bubble on the eye surface is often indicative of a conjunctival cyst (also known as a retention cyst.) Conjunctival cysts are common and not life-threatening although they could indicate an underlying problem.


Characteristics


Cysts on the eye typically appear clear, white or filled with fluid. They are usually small and difficult to see with the naked eye. A cyst that continues to grow or begins to cause discomfort might be indicative of a more serious issue and should be seen by an ophthalmologist right away.


Cause


Conjunctival cysts usually are caused by an accumulation of tear products from the eye that have become trapped in the conjunctiva. Other causes include, but are not limited to, eye trauma, infection or allergic reactions.


Treatment


Treatment is not usually necessary for conjunctival cysts unless they don't go away on their own. If the cysts are being stubborn, an ophthalmologist will take a laser and prick the surface of the cyst to release the fluid. The doctor also will prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication if he or she feels it necessary.

1. Purchase a review book. The USMLE Step One is an eight-hour, computer-based exam composed of 350 multiple-choice questions. The concepts tested include: anatomy, biochemistry, histology, physiology, neuroscience, psychiatry, genetics and pathology. These are the basic sciences learned in medical school. It is very important to have a thorough understanding of these sciences. You will want a review book geared specifically to the USMLE Step One and the basic sciences. Top-rated books include: Kaplan "Medical USMLE Step 1 QBook", "USMLE Step 1 Secrets" by Thomas Brown and "First Aid for the USMLE Step 1" by Tao Le. Commit to studying daily at least four months prior to taking the exam. As of 2010, the price for these study guides ranges from $29.67 to $40.95 each.








2. Download the USMLE orientation and practice materials at www.usmle.org. It will give you a tutorial of the USMLE Step One and multiple-choice test questions similar to those on the actual exam. This download is free.


3. Enroll to take a practice test through www.usmle.org. You will have to be accepted take the USMLE Step One exam. A practice session simulates the time frame, environment and question format of the test. You are allowed to take one practice session prior to the test. As of 2010, the fee for a practice session is $52.

Build A Vocabulary With Latin & Greek Roots

A dictionary can provide meanings of Greek and Latin roots in unfamiliar words.


You can easily expand your vocabulary with a knowledge of Greek and Latin roots, the basic stems of many English words. Closely related to roots, Greek and Latin prefixes and suffixes attach to roots to form new meanings or functions, according to Capital Community College's Guide to Grammar and Writing. Some words contain all three elements: Greek or Latin prefixes, roots and suffixes. By analyzing the meanings of the roots and attached elements, you can reasonably guess at the meaning of unknown words and further increase your vocabulary.








Instructions


1. Become familiar with common Greek roots. For example, the University of Houston-Victoria indicates that the Greek root "gyn" means "woman" and the root "anthrop" means "human." As a result, it is easy to differentiate the words gynecologist" referring to a doctor who treats women's disorders from an anthropologist who studies human cultures. When you know that "phil" refers to love, you can conclude that a philanthropist shows a love of humanity through generous donations.


2. Learn common Latin roots. Knowing that the Latin root "verb" means "word," you can easily see how the term "verbose" means wordy or long-winded. The root "luc" (light) clarifies the meaning of "lucid," referring to clear and logical ideas. Similarly, the word "vacuous" (empty-headed) clearly derives its meaning from the Latin root "vac," referring to emptiness. If you recognize the Latin roots "jur" and "dict" (law, speak), jurisdiction makes sense as the power to "speak" the law in a certain territory.








3. Explore the roots of Greek and Latin prefixes to generate additional vocabulary. Capital College notes that prefixes such as "mis" or "miso"(wrong or hateful) can express negative ideas. When this Greek prefix joins the root "gyn," the term "misogynist" appears, referring to someone who hates women. Similarly, when the prefix "miso" joins the Greek root "gam" (marriage), the word "misogamist" logically refers to someone who hates marriage. When joined with "anthrop," the term "misanthrope" emerges, referring to someone who hates humanity.


4. Change parts of speech by adding Greek and Latin suffixes to roots. The words "misogynist" and "misogamist" both contain the suffix "ist," referring to a person. The "ic" suffix in "misogynistic" transforms it to an adjective.


5. Break down unfamiliar words by concentrating on the meanings of multiple roots. Note how affixes (prefixes and suffixes) can also affect meaning. For example, knowing the meaning of the roots "bio" and "graph" (life, writing) and the prefix "auto" (self), you can determine that an autobiography refers to a book written about your own life. When you recognize the common roots "chron" and "meter" (time, measure) in chronometer, it is easily to deduce that the term refers to a device that carefully measures time.

Make Fake Bullets







Whether you’re dressing as a commando for Halloween or doing a presentation to promote gun safety, you might need to make your own fake bullets. Using standard household items and tools, you can make your own realistic ammunition to fool family and friends. Read on to learn make fake bullets.


Instructions


1. Decide which kind of bullets you’re going to recreate. Bullets for a cowboy’s six-shooter look a lot different from the kind used in anti-aircraft guns. Look in books about military equipment to determine what your fake bullets should look like.


2. Use tin snips to cut sheet metal into strips approximately 1 inch wide and 1 inch long. Lay a dowel or a pencil in the middle and use the pliers to make the sheet metal into a cylinder. The ends of the metal should be touching.


3. Cut some small circles out of the metal. These should be the same diameter as the fake bullets you are making so you can use them to make the rear end. If you want to go for a higher level of realism, make a small circle in the center of the circle. This resembles the place the hammer hits real bullets.


4. Allow the soldering iron to heat up and then draw a thin line of solder to seal the fake bullets together. Do the same to put the small metal disc on one end. Solder the marble to the other end to make the round front. If a marble is too big, you can use anything that is small enough and rounded to make the tip of your faux ammunition.








5. Use sandpaper or a file to smooth the surface of your fake bullets. There shouldn’t be any jutting edges or bulges from extra solder.


6. Bring your fake bullets outside and put them on a big sheet of newspaper. Spray paint your fake bullets with the metallic color of your choosing. Most bullets have a somewhat gold hue, but others are gray. Wait for the first coat to dry and then apply another. Be sure to roll the fake bullets between coats to cover all of their faces equally.

The phrase "Ivy League" has moved out of the sports world and now refers to the universities themselves, with connotations of tradition, exclusivity and academic excellence.


Brown University


Brown, 39th on U.S. News and World Report's 2010 ranking of the world's top universities, dates to 1764. Located in Providence, R.I., the university is known for its devotion to "liberal learning," which gives undergraduates the opportunity to develop their own core curricula.


Columbia University


The oldest university in New York state, Columbia is located on Manhattan's Upper West Side. It came in 11th on U.S. News' 2010 rankings, standing out for its commitment to research in the medical and social sciences. Its three undergraduate schools draw students to New York City from all over the world.


Cornell University


Founded in 1865 in Ithaca, New York, Cornell University is the youngest of the Ivies. It calls itself the most diverse of the Ivy League schools, and was home to the first colleges of hotel administration, industrial and labor relations and veterinary medicine in the U.S. Cornell ranked 16th on the 2010 list of the world's best universities.


Dartmouth College


Dartmouth, founded in Hanover, New Hampshire in 1769, was the first U.S. college to have professional schools of engineering and management. Ranked at 90th among the world' top 400 colleges, Dartmouth is known for its student involvement in sports and Greek life. It is also No. 1 among the Ivies for students involved in study-abroad programs.


Harvard University








Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard is the oldest university in the U.S. Founded in 1636, Harvard was ranked the top university in the country and No. 2 in the world by U.S. News and World Report. The school boasts 18,000 degree candidates in 10 principal academic units, and its life and social sciences departments are considered the world's best.


Princeton University


Originally known as the College of New Jersey, the Princeton, New Jersey, university is ranked 10th in the world. Princeton is known as an outstanding research university and is also committed to the undergraduate experience; nearly all undergrads live on campus and over half participate in intercollegiate or intramural sports and activities.


University of Pennsylvania


The University of Pennsylvania, which U.S. News ranked at 12th in the world, was founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin. Located in Philadelphia, the university is known for its top-ranked schools of business, nursing and communication, as well as innovative interdisciplinary programs.


Yale University


Yale, the third-best university in the world according to 2010 rankings, was founded in 1701 in New Haven, Connecticut. Yale's claims to fame include its medical and divinity schools. In the 1930s, the university adopted a residential-college approach, dividing the undergraduate community into 12 colleges with under 500 students each, based on the traditional structure of English universities such as Oxford and Cambridge.

Which Medical Schools Have Rolling Admissions

Many medical schools offer rolling admissions.


Many medical schools in the United States have a rolling admissions policy. They review applications and schedule interviews as they receive the applications, rather than collecting applications by a certain date and reviewing them all at once. Schools employ this process not only because it's more convenient for applicants and admissions staff, but because it helps to prevent unfilled slots in programs.


University of California, San Francisco


The University of California, San Francisco offers potential students rolling admissions to their medical school. Applicants may send in their materials, including MCAT results, letters of recommendation, American Medical College Application and secondary UCSF application any time after June 4th and before October 15th. Applicants will receive UCSF's decision any time between December 15th and May 1st. Potential students who have been placed on the waiting list will be notified of their status by May 15th and if accepted, will be notified by August 1st. The School of Medicine at UCSF selects approximately 500 applicants for interviews each year and accepts roughly 250 students into the program.


New York University


The New York University School of Medicine has a rolling admissions policy. Applicants are welcome to submit their American Medical College Application any time after June 4th and before October 15th. The NYU secondary application, transcripts, MCAT results and letters of recommendation must be submitted by December 1st. Invitations to interview at NYU will be sent out beginning in September; interviews take place from October to January. Acceptance letters will be mailed on a rolling basis beginning in December and ending in March when wait list and rejection letters are sent. NYU interviews approximately 1,000 applicants each year and accepts between 100 and 200.








Brown: Alpert Medical School








The Alpert Medical School at Brown accepts students on a rolling basis. The American Medical College Application may be submitted any time from after it becomes available in early June up until November 1st. The Alpert Medical School secondary application and all other materials, including MCAT results, transcripts and application fees must be submitted by December 31st. Interviews are conducted between October and March; acceptance letters are sent out in November at the earliest and continue until the class has filled. Brown interviews roughly 250 potential students each year and accepts between 35 and 50.


University of Connecticut


The School of Medicine at the University of Connecticut offers applicants rolling admissions. Prospective students must submit their American Medical College Application by December 15th. All other materials, including a supplemental application, letters of recommendation and transcripts must be submitted by December 31st. The school sends out invitations for interviews as early as August and begins issuing acceptance letters at the beginning of October. Most slots in the program have been filled by the end of the year so applicants are not encouraged to wait until the final deadlines to submit their materials. The School of Medicine at UC receives approximately 3,000 applications each year for 85 spots.

Do You Need Receipts For A Tax Return

It's tax time and you're diligently filling out your income tax returns. But you have a big question: You run a freelance business out of your house. Because of this, you claim several deductions. Keep these receipts in a safe place. If you want to make filing your returns especially easy, organize your receipts by type of business expense. Then, as tax day nears, you won't have to waste time searching for your receipts.








Getting Help


Sometimes a tax return becomes so complicated that it makes sense to rely on a public accountant or tax-filing service for help. This can become the case if your return includes a large amount of deductions. A tax accountant can help you determine which expenses are legitimate deductions and which are not. Just be careful not to hand your accountant a bag of unsorted receipts; this will increase the amount of time it takes your accountant to complete your return and make your bill rise accordingly.

Identify A Fake Gucci Bag

You can't identify a fake Gucci unless you know what a real Gucci looks like. Though some counterfeiters work hard to make their products look authentic, there are some things to check for that will be found only on a real bag.


Instructions


1. Authentic Gucci bags have a label saying they were made in Italy, and only a handful of retail outlets are licensed to sell Gucci products. Most of these are high-end stores. If you are offered a Gucci at anything less than a high-end store, it is likely a fake.


2. Look for the authentic double G logo on the zipper, inside the bag, and on the certificate of authenticity.


3. Demand a certificate of authenticity with the Gucci bag, which will be necessary should you decide to sell the bag. There should be four to six numbers representing the serial code on the tag inside the bag. The serial number must match the certificate of authenticity.








4. Check the condition of the leather, which must be in one piece and flawless. Check the liner, which should lie perfectly within the bag with no loose ends. The seams of a real Gucci are hand-stitched and are never frayed nor glued down. Fake Gucci bags will cut any and all of these corners.

Care For A Jacksonpratt Drain

After you undergo surgery, your doctor may insert a drainage tube, called a Jackson-Pratt drain, into your skin to collect and remove body fluid. Tubing connects the collection bulb to the drainage site. Periodically, you must strip the tubing, empty the bulb and change the dressing on your skin. Most patients must perform these maintenance tasks every eight to 12 hours. Your doctor will show you care for the Jackson-Pratt drain before you leave the hospital.


Instructions


Strip the Drain


1. Grasp the tubing close to your skin firmly to hold it in place. Exert only enough pressure that you do not pull the Jackson-Pratt drain out of the skin while you strip it.


2. Place your thumb and index finger on the tubing just below where you are holding it with your other hand. Squeeze the tubing until it lies flat.


3. Guide your fingers down the tubing, continuing to squeeze it, until you reach the bulb. Release your fingers and the hand holding the tubing near your skin. Repeat this several times until the tubing appears clear of fluid.


Empty the Drain


4. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water before and after each time you handle the Jackson-Pratt drain.


5. Remove the plug from the bulb and pour the contents of the bulb into a measuring cup. Squeeze the middle of the bulb to ensure all of the contents empty into the cup.


6. Dip a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and clean the drainage plug with it.


7. Squeeze the bulb so it lies flat and reinsert the plug. The bulb should remain flat when you release it to provide for suction action.


8. Write down the amount of fluid in the measuring cup, as well as the color of the fluid. Indicate the day and time of these measurements. This helps the doctor evaluate how well you are healing and when to remove the drain.


Change the Dressing


9. Wash your hands thoroughly and gently remove the dressing from around the drainage site. Discard the dressing and rewash your hands.


10. Clean the skin as directed by your doctor. He may instruct you to use hydrogen peroxide or a 0.9 percent saline solution. Apply the product to a sterile cotton ball and gently wipe the area.


11. Apply an antibiotic ointment if your doctor has instructed you to do so. Place the ointment on a new sterile cotton ball and apply it to the skin.


12. Cut halfway into a new dressing. Make the cut halfway across one side of the dressing, cutting toward the center. Use sterile scissors.


13. Place the dressing on the drainage site, positioning the tubing within the slit in the dressing. Use medical tape to fasten the dressing to your skin and rewash your hands.
