Homeschool Reading Programs

Literacy development is the key to educational success. Educational studies have confirmed that children with good reading skills have a higher rate of success in school than children with poor reading skills. Most states that require annual evaluations for homeschoolers focus largely on reading abilities. Because of this, even the most relaxed and unstructured homeschooling family tends to give more consideration to their reading program than any other subject. As the number of homeschoolers continues to rise annually, so do the options for reading programs.








Types








Parents who homeschool their children have several choices available when establishing a reading program. One option is to create a new and original program. This option allows the parent to design her own curriculum, or purchase pre-packaged curriculums. Alternately, the parent can find an external source, such as an umbrella school, learning center, or virtual education program. Lastly, she can join a co-op, a group of homeschooling parents who work together to educate their children. Each parent teaches the area where he is most adept.


Features


Under a self-directed program or co-op, parents can design and execute their reading program as they see fit. Some parents chose a traditional or classical approach to education, while others explore alternative methods. For example, some programs rely heavily on the child's interests (for example, comics rather than text books), educational play (puppet shows, Yu-Gi-Oh cards, word bingo) or practical applications (volunteer work or starting a home business).


Parents can use umbrella schools or learning centers for assistance in goal setting.


Considerations


Evaluations for homeschoolers in reading programs under umbrella schools or learning centers is often based on current educational assessment methods, such as grades, test scores and teacher feedback. This is generally acceptable to the Board of Education if state requirements require an evaluation of the program. Parents who opt for self-directed programs may or may not use traditional grading methods or assessments. Some may opt for formal testing and grades, while others prefer to informally analyze their children's progress as they learn. Many states require some form of annual evaluation for homeschoolers, often in the form of standardized tests.


Benefits


Homeschooling reading programs offer several advantages to students. The flexibility of a homeschool reading program allows students to work at their own pace. Reading lessons can be delayed until a child is showing readiness, rather than at an assigned time by the school board. When a concept is mastered, the student can move on immediately, and, if ready, progress to new grade levels before the end of the year. A child's learning style and individual interests can be taken into account when designing a homeschool reading program. Finally, one-on-one attention has consistently been proven to be beneficial in any area of education.


Effects


The results of homeschooling on reading scores, as well as overall educational achievements, favor homeschoolers. According to the Educational Policy Analysis Archives, at least 25 percent of homeschoolers rank one or more grades above public schooled peers of the same age. The gap between homeschooler and public/private school performance begins to widen significantly after fifth grade. The average homeschooler typically performs in the 70th to 80th percentile of standardized tests, approximately 30 percentiles above the average public school student. Further, according to ACT test results, homeschoolers consistently have outscored their public and private schooled peers over the last ten years.

The Average Gmat Score For The Top Business Schools

The GMAT consists of three main parts.








Going to business school for an MBA gives a student the necessary skills and credentials to further his career. Taking the GMAT, or Graduate Management Admissions Test, for admission to business school is similar to taking the SAT for admission to an undergraduate program. Average GMAT Score for Top Schools


According to the GMAT CAT website, the average worldwide GMAT score is 570. For a Top 50 business school program, the average score is 660. Generally, the higher your prospective program ranks, the higher your GMAT score should be. The top U.S. business school programs include the Harvard Business School, University of Pennsylvania Wharton School, Stanford University Graduate School of Business, MIT Sloan School of Management and the Yale University School of Management. The average score for these schools ranges from 710 to 720, according to the GMAT Cat website.


About the GMAT


Most top business school programs require that applicants take the GMAT. The GMAT is a standardized test that consists of three main parts: math, verbal and analytical writing. The math section consists of 37 multiple choice questions on data sufficiency and problem solving. The verbal section consists of 41 multiple choice questions that cover reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction. For the analytical writing section, test-takers must complete two writing tasks: an analysis of an issue and an analysis of an argument.


Taking the GMAT


The GMAT is administered around the country year-round at test centers. According to MBA.com, the test costs $250 and can be taken once every month and no more than five times in a year, if necessary. On the day of the test, you should bring a government-issued photo ID that includes your signature, birth date and full name. I need a social life.


Is it important to have a social life while in college? After all, aren't you in college to learn? There are those who would say that the main focus while in college should be academics and academics alone. However, having a social life while in college may actually enhance your learning environment.


I'm in College to Learn. Why Have a Social Life?


College life begins.


Beginning college is beginning a new chapter in your life. The days of high school are far behind you, and now it's time to settle in and prepare for what your future has in store for you. Chances are that you have already decided on what you want to major in or you have chosen to major in "general studies" until you figure out what you want to really do with your life.


For many, starting college is a stressful and scary time. Depending on where the college is located, you could be hundreds and even thousands of miles away from home. This for some will be the first time they have been away from their family, their hometown and their best childhood friends.


However, there is no need to be stressed. While you will be anxious and nervous, college life will open many new doors for you. Your academics will pave the way for your future career. While academics are important and should be your main focus while in college, it is also just as important to have a social life.


Study Partners


Students study better with a partner.


Having a social life in college is a great way to find study partners. In the college setting, your studies tend to be a bit more detailed then when you were in high school. Chances are, you are going to come across a ton of information that you have never encountered before. Having a study partner is a great way to bounce ideas and facts off of one another. Studying doesn't seem so stressful when you have someone to help you get through a tough exam or paper you have to write.


The best part about having a social life in college is that you are not limited to the campus environment. The best part is that you're getting a social life and great friend to assist you with studying.

Always remember safety.


Having a social life in college is also a great way to ensure your safety. They say it's better to travel in numbers, and this is never more true then when in college. Whether you're male of female, you never want to be out roaming the town or campus alone. It just isn't safe anymore. So the friends that you socialize with outside of class can become the best safety measure. So you'll not only have fun with a large group, but you're less likely to become the victim of a crime when out with a crowd.


Stress Relievers


Take a break from studying.


There's no doubt that college life will get stressful. It's a lot of work that is worth it when you walk across the stage with your degree in hand. However, studying for a test, writing a term paper and reading chapter after chapter, in general, can put a lot of pressure on a college student. Having a social life is a great way to ease the stress.








Let's say you've been studying for two days for an exam coming up in your biology class. You've read page after page and diagram after diagram. All of a sudden there's a knock on the door and it's two of your dorm buddies wanting you to go with them for pizza. What do you do? Think about it. You've been studying your head off, and you have a headache from it. Why not take a break, grab some pizza with friends and have a good time? You'll find that when you return, you'll be more alert, relaxed and ready to pick up where you left off, but refreshed.


Travel Companions


Find a travel companion.


The college is offering a summer trip to Spain. While it is a learning environment, it's also a time to have some fun and explore a different culture. So you talk to a couple of your friends, and you all decide to go together. This is another great aspect as to why it's important to have a social life while in college. We all need social stimulation and finding traveling companions is a great part of that college environment. You'll find some amazing people to travel with and make the trip one to remember.


Enjoy College Life


Enjoy life outside of college.


Having a social life in college in not a bad thing. As long as you remember that your in college to get an education and always put that first, then having a social life is easy. Life doesn't stop because your in college; it's just beginning. You need a social life to ease stress and anxiety, to have some fun and make some great friends. College should be enjoyed and in order to do that, you need to take a break every now and then and just cut loose. So have fun in college, study hard and make memories that will last a life time. College life will be something you'll look back on with a smile.

Earn A Bachelor'S Degree In Less Time

College level textbooks and materials add up.


The typical four to five-year model of attaining a Bachelor's Degree overwhelms many college-bound students. For some, the cost of a four year higher education (including room and board) is not feasible. For others, time is precious and four years seems like too long to spend simply attaining a Bachelor's degree. Whatever the reason, many people are seeking ways to graduate in a shorter time frame. From completing Advanced Placement courses and tests in high school to taking online classes, options are numerous for attaining a Bachelor's degree in less than the typical four to five years.


Instructions


1. Students can choose to take Advanced Placement courses.


Take Advanced Placement courses and pass the respective tests. According to collegeboard.com, "The AP Program has enabled millions of students to take college-level courses and exams, and to earn college credit or placement while still in high school." By taking AP (Advanced Placement) courses and passing the subsequent exams in high school, a student can earn college credit for core classes. This will reduce the number of credits that he or she will have to take in college. An additional benefit of taking the AP courses and exams is that it may, "Increase eligibility for scholarships and makes candidates more attractive to colleges".


2. Students can take dual credit courses.








Enroll in dual credit courses. Many states in America offer these types of classes to high school students. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board explains the process: "A high school junior or senior enrolls in a college course and receives simultaneous academic credit for the course from both the college and the high school." This opportunity is similar to the AP program but differs in that dual credit courses do not rely on a one-time standardized test to determine college credit. Rather, the course will be a pass/fail grade for the college depending on the grade received in the high school for the course.


3. Student take CLEP exams to earn college credit.


Take CLEP tests. In addition to taking dual credit and AP classes and tests, another way to earn early college credit is to study for and take a College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test. CLEP tests are offered regularly throughout the year and there are upwards of 30 tests available that provide opportunity to earn college credit. Many of these tests will be introductory or core classes and are better taken at the beginning of a college degree program.


4. Students still need to study for summer classes.


Enroll in college classes during the summer. Typically each college or university will have two main semesters of classes each year. If a student attends classes solely in the fall and spring semesters of school it will take them four to five years to complete their Bachelor's Degree depending on their course load each semester. However, many colleges also offer classes in the summer months which can last from five to eight weeks but provide the same credit value as a typical semester-long class. A student can take advantage of these shorter, more intense classes and finish significantly quicker than a student who only attends classes in the regular semesters.


5. Students enroll in online classes.


Take online classes. Completion of online classes is another way to accelerate the typical four to five year Bachelor's Degree program. A student can enroll in his university of choice and can add online classes to his face-to-face schedule of classes to take his course level up a notch. Another option would be to take online classes from another junior college or university while one is taking a full load of classes at her primary college or university. It would be a very intense learning experience for the student to take a full course load and add additional classes online, but it is workable and can be an enormous time-saver.

Scholarships For Education Majors In Tennessee

With the cost of a college education steadily increasing, students can't afford to miss out on the numerous scholarship opportunities available. Christa McAuliffe Scholarship


The Christa McAuliffe Scholarship is a state-sponsored program designed to honor students who commit to pursuing a career as an educator in Tennessee. The scholarship program is open to students entering the second semester of their junior year at an accredited college or university in-state. All applicants must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and above-average SAT or ACT scores to be considered. As of 2011, the annual award amount was $500.


Austin Peay State University Scholarships


The College of Education at Austin Peay State University offers numerous awards for incoming and currently enrolled education majors. For the 2011-2012 academic year, available awards include the $1,000 Donald B. Lambert Scholarship, the $1,000 Clarksville-Montgomery County Retired Teachers Scholarship and the $500 Hendon-Stokes Scholarship. Endowed scholarships are also available in varying amounts, depending on annual program funding and individual need. The selection criteria varies for each award, and the majority of scholarships are renewable.








Tennessee Education Association Scholarships


The Tennessee Education Association (TEA) funds several scholarship opportunities annually for state residents. In 2011-2012, a $1,000 award is available to the president of the Student Tennessee Education Association (STEA). STEA members may also apply for $1,000 and $500 awards. In addition, one $1,000 scholarship is offered to a child of a current TEA member, a graduating high school senior planning to major in education, a minority student majoring in education and a graduate education major.


Metropolitan Nashville Education Foundation Scholarships


The Metropolitan Nashville Education Foundation offers scholarships annually to outstanding undergraduate education majors in Tennessee. The MNEF fund provides one-time education funding to incoming freshmen who need help with paying for college. In 2011, the Johnella H. Martin Scholarship also is available to undergraduates enrolled in any year of study in a four-year program. Career goals, academic achievement and letters of recommendation are the primary criteria for selection. Individual award amounts vary based on need.


Tennesse Teaching Scholars Program








The Tennessee Teaching Scholars Program is a state-funded program designed to increase the number of teachers working in-state. The program is open to juniors, seniors and graduate students enrolled in education programs at accredited schools in-state. Applicants must be state residents and have a minimum 2.75 GPA. The program provides up to 75 percent of tuition funding for up to four years of study. Recipients must agree to teach at a Tennessee public school for one year for every year funding is received.

Ace GMAT Sentence Correction


It would seem common sense that the GMAT sentence correction is the easiest part of the test. However, some of the questions can be tricky and it is often hard to choose between two very close choices. The good news is that sentence correction questions are the easiest to improve on. Here are some tips to help you study so that you earn a higher GMAT score and make your MBA application shine.


Instructions


1. The most commonly tested errors on the GMAT are those involving verbs (subject/verb agreement, tense, consistency), pronouns (ambiguity, agreement in number), placement of modifying clauses (ambiguity, wordiness), and parallel structure (items in a list, comparisons, transition words). Study accordingly to make the best use of your time. Spelling is not tested.


2. The first answer choice 'A' is always the original phrasing, ie it's the answer choice that does not make any changes. Of the 5 choices A, B, C, D, E, answer choice 'A' is actually the correct choice about 1/5 of the time! So, don't be afraid to choose it if you think the sentence is correct as it is. A good GMAT rule is don't overcorrect.


3. If you're stuck between two choices and they both seem grammatical and unambiguous, pick the one that is shorter or simpler. Sheer wordiness is considered an error in some sentence correction questions.


4. Practice doing these questions under timed conditions. Ideally, you should be able to do them in under 30 seconds. Doing them quickly will buy you more time for the reading comprehension and critical reasoning questions. Good luck studying.

Consolidate Defaulted Student Loans With Acs

Consolidating your defaulted student loans can help improve your credit.


To pay for college, you may have received loans from different lenders. When it was time to repay your loans, you probably had a high interest rate, a payment that you could not afford or multiple school payments due each month. In some circumstances people may not be able to repay the student loans, which can lead to default. Fortunately, with ACS, the number one outsourced student loan provider for federal student loans, you can consolidate your defaulted student loans.


Instructions








1. Obtain a pin number to access and sign federal student aid information online. Visit Pin.ed.gov, the website for Federal Student Aid (see Resources), to either have a pin number mailed to you or to choose a pin number that can be used via email.


2. Find out which loans are in default. You need to know which accounts and how much they are in default before you can have them consolidated with ACS (Affiliated Computer Services, Inc.). Go to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) at Nslds.ed.gov to find out what loans you have.








3. Determine the account numbers and specific totals that are in default. If your defaulted loans went to a collection agency, contact the agency directly to verify the specific amount due and your account number. Do not inform the collection agent that you are going to consolidate, as he may discourage you from doing so. The agency would rather collect the payment from you.


4. Visit the ACS website at ACS-education.com to begin the consolidation process. (See Resources.) You will need to have your loan information, the account numbers, your mailing address and basic information for your application. The process typically takes 30 days for ACS to verify the loans in question and to consolidate them into one account.


5. Sign the master promissory note and send it back to ACS. Signing a master promissory note assures ACS you will repay the loan that you are about to consolidate. This information is usually filled out online, or if you choose, you can print it out and mail it in.


6. Follow up with your ACS representatives to determine when you will begin to pay back the loans. If you choose to take more college courses, inform ACS after you are enrolled so you can set up an in-school deferment. In-school deferments allow you to stay in class without having to repay student loans until you graduate.

Set Up A Gradebook In Moodle

Moodle is a computer program that allows you to easily mark work and record grades.


Moodle is an excellent tool that allows teachers and students to access relevant information about their classes, see test results and communicate with each other. The gradebook feature allows teachers to share grade information with students. A gradebook must be properly set up, however, to ensure that grades are accurately recorded and students' privacy is maintained.


Instructions


1. Log into your course on Moodle, and find the "Administration" box. This is usually located on the right side of the screen, but can be moved around.


2. Select "Groups." This will launch a window showing all the pre-set groups, and who is a member of each one.


3. Click "Create Group" and write a name in the "Group Name" box. The name of the class as it appears on a timetable is a good idea, and will ensure you remember it.


4. Type an "Enrollment Key" into the relevant box. If you would like to check your spelling, check the "Unmask" box, which will make your password visible. Save the changes.


5. Click "Grades" in the "Administration" box. This should launch a window, and a pop up.


6. Select "Scales." Although different versions of Moodle have different gradebooks, the "Scales" option remains the same, and should be located on the left side, underneath "Edit."


7. Select "Add a new Scale." You will be prompted to give your scale a name, such as the test name, or the date and year. Fill in the name.


8. Type the possible marks into the large "Scale" box. For example, this could be "pass, merit, distinction." All grades need to be separated by a comma, so Moodle recognizes each individual grade.


9. Type a description in the description box if necessary, such as the date and time of the test. Click "Save."

Types Of Acidosis

Types of Acidosis


The lungs and the kidneys control and maintain the balance between the acids and bases in the body. Acidosis describes a group of conditions that occur when this balance is disrupted by a build of acid or loss of base. Respiratory ketoacidosis and diabetic ketoacidosis, a metabolic acidosis, are the most common types.


Types


Diabetic ketoacidosis occurs pursuant to diabetes when the body cannot breakdown glucose or sugar for energy due to a lack of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that breaks down sugar for use as fuel for the body. Fatty acids are then broken down instead of sugars. Respiratory ketoacidosis is a condition that is a result of an imbalance in the acid-base balance of the body. This happens when the lungs are unable to remove all the carbon dioxide the body creates.


Causes








Diabetic ketoacidosis is caused by a lack of insulin in the body, most commonly related to type 1 diabetes, causing the body to use body fat for energy instead. It can also be caused by increased insulin needs due to a heart attack, trauma, surgery or infection. Respiratory ketoacidosis can be caused by a variety of factors including asthma, scoliosis, obesity and drugs that suppress respiration like narcotics and benzodiazepines.


Symptoms and Complications


Some symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis are flushed face, dry mouth, increased urination, stomach pain and nausea. Muscle stiffness, abdominal pain, headache and decreased appetite are also reported by some sufferers as well as fruit scented breath. Build up of fluid in the brain and kidney or renal failure are potential complications of diabetic ketoacidosis. Symptoms of respiratory ketoacidosis include lethargy, fatigue, confusion and sleepiness. Shortness of breath also appears due to restricted lung capacity. Respiratory ketoacidosis can cause complications like stroke and respiratory failure.


Treatments








Mild cases of diabetic ketoacidosis can be maintained at home by recognizing what your body's warning signs are and making appropriate changes in diet and lifestyle at home. Severe cases of diabetic ketoacidosis may require the use of insulin replacement and treatment of the underlying cause if it's an infection. Treating the underlying lung disease is the focus of treatment for respiratory ketoacidosis. Bronchodilators are used to reduce airway obstruction and stop smoking treatment may also be used.


Prevention


Smoking is a major contributor to the development of the diseases that result in respiratory acidosis. Obesity may also contribute to by causing obesity-hypoventilation syndrome which can lead to respiratory acidosis. What Education & Training Does A Dermatologist Need

Dermatologists diagnose and treat conditions that affect the skin, hair and nails.


Dermatologists diagnose skin disorders and diseases, perform procedures and prescribe medications. Many dermatologists also perform cosmetic procedures, such as Botox injections and chemical peels. Prospective dermatologists are required to complete a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, become licensed as a physician, complete a three- to four-year dermatology residency program; and pass a certifying examination.


Undergraduate Degree








Before applying to medical school, aspiring dermatologists must have a bachelor's degree from a college or university. Many undergraduate institutions do not offer pre-med as a major, although these students typically are called pre-medical students; however, in most institutions, students are required to major in any field, but complete certain required courses. These courses are designed to prepare students for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). Some of the courses include biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and English.


Medical School


After passing the MCAT, students must be accepted into a medical school program to acquire their Doctor of Medicine. Medical school is a four-year program that includes a combination of classroom instruction and clinical training. The first two years are designated for classroom and laboratory instruction; students acquire clinical experience under the supervision of licensed physicians in hospitals, clinics and other health-care facilities during their last two years. After completing medical school, individuals must complete a residency program, typically in a hospital.


Dermatology Program


The dermatology residency program is three years. Students must complete academic courses as well as clinical training. Students undergo lectures, seminars, conferences and more. Some of the required courses provide in-depth training in some of the basic sciences, including anatomy, biochemistry, entomology, histology, oncology, pharmacology and more. Dermatology residency programs are designed to train students to be able to perform procedures, such as dermatologic surgeries and laser surgery. Also, during the residency program, students are required to complete formal examinations and obtain performance ratings by the school faculty.








Licensure and Certification


Before entering into a dermatology residency program, medical school graduates must pass the Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Obtaining a passing score on the USMLE enables physicians to obtain the required license to practice medicine in all states. Candidates for dermatology certification must complete a certifying examination administered by the American Board of Dermatology.


Salary


Employment opportunities for physicians are expected to increase by 22% between 2008 and 2018, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. The bureau also reports that physicians who practice in medical specialties earned median annual salaries of $339,738 in 2008.

What is an AA Degree?


An Associate of Arts degree (AA) is a two-year degree most often earned from a two-year community college. In many state systems of higher education, the AA represents the first two years of a four-year baccalaureate (BA) degree.


Identification


An Associate of Arts degree is most appropriate for a student who plans to go on to a four-year institution and complete a bachelor of arts degree. For example, students who plan to study English, history, journalism or psychology can often complete an AA at a local community college and transfer the work to a university to be used toward completion of the BA degree. An AA degree is not usually considered an end in itself unless the student simply wants to broaden her horizons.


Features


An AA degree usually includes coursework that educators identify as general studies or liberal studies. Students will probably complete a core of courses in English composition, mathematics and laboratory science. In addition, they will complete social science coursework (political science and psychology, for example) and the humanities (music history and literature). College Roommate Conflicts

Sharing a room peacefully can be a challenge.


Going to college means making a great deal of changes for many students. For some, living in a dormitory means learning share space with another student who is often a total stranger. While some roommates are able to co-exist peacefully, many have conflicts that they need to work through.


Personal Space Issues


In some cases, the dorm is the first time students have to share a room with someone else. It may be hard to share items, such as mini-refrigerator or a television, or get used to the idea that someone wants to go to bed hours before the other. One roommate may want to watch television when the other wants to study, which can lead to conflict if the one roommate feels she's being forced out of the room. Northwestern University's Medill School offers bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism, as well as the opportunity to earn both degrees in fewer than five years through an accelerated program. The school operates two working news bureaus - in Chicago and in Washington, D.C. - that employ many of the school's graduate students and provide news coverage to dozens of client organizations. Undergraduates undergo an 11-week residency in a professional newsroom. About 100 media outlets across the country participate in Medill's journalism residency program.

U.S. News and World Report in 2009 ranked UNC Chapel Hill among the top 10 public universities in the nation. Indiana University, Bloomington

Teaching Students Analyze A Prompt For Writing An Argumentative Essay

Analyzing the prompt ensures that students will complete all assignment objectives.


When students get an assignment for an argumentative essay, they may be tempted to jump right in and describe their perspective on the topic. However, beginning an essay without analyzing the prompt can cause them to not follow directions, which can result in a poor grade, no matter how well written the essay might be. You can help students analyze argumentative essay prompts by showing them take a prompt apart, understand the assigned genre and analyze their audience.


Breaking Down the Prompt


Understanding what the prompt is asking for is the first step to analyzing an essay question. Many prompts contain multiple parts, all of which are key to completing the essay objectives. To teach students this concept, have them highlight different parts of the argumentative essay prompt and make a checklist of what they need to accomplish. For example, if a prompt says to choose a controversial issue, describe the problem and then present a solution, students would list these three objectives and cross them off as they complete those sections of the essay.


Subgenres and Strategies


Vocabulary is also key to understanding prompts. Although the words "argue" and "persuade" might indicate it will be an argumentative essay, there are different kinds of argumentative writing that use unique language. For example, the prompt may ask students to consider both sides of the issue equally, indicating a pros and cons essay. They may have to use a personal experience as evidence, resulting in a narrative argument. Teachers can give examples of prompts for different essays and show how their language changes the type of argumentative strategy they'll use for each assignment.


Audience Analysis


Many students write argumentative essays with a narrow view of their audience, thinking only of their instructor and classmates. However, looking at a prompt should encourage them to think about the kinds of people who might realistically read the paper and be sensitive to those positions as they write. To explain this concept, teachers can choose a sample topic, such as whether sex education should be allowed in schools, and ask students to brainstorm the audiences who might read the essay and what their perspectives might be. These potential readers could include students, teachers, administrators and parents.


Author Roles


As students read the prompt, they'll need to consider their role as author. If they're writing a narrative argument, their experience will be crucial to developing themselves as credible authorities. By contrast, a pros and cons essay will put their personal views in the background in favor of objective research. You can teach appropriate roles by linking this concept to point of view, the speaker's distance from the topic. As students read sample prompts, ask them to write down whether the essay requires the immediacy of first person, the use of "I," or the objectivity of third person.








Research








A final question to consider is what research the essay will require. For example, an essay about giving an R rating to movies with tobacco use might require scholarly articles about smoking in the media and its effect on younger viewers, research on related topics like tobacco advertising, and examples of movies that feature tobacco use. You can teach this concept by putting students in groups and giving each group a sample argumentative essay prompt. Each group will then brainstorm as many kinds of sources as they can think of that would be useful for the paper.

Terminology Notes








Create a page on your class website that provides terminology notes in a lecture fashion but with blanks where the terms should be. Students should read through the notes and fill in the blanks with the correct medical terminology; they also can print the notes and write correct terms in the blanks. As an alternative, use pull-down menu tests or quizzes for terms if your website setup permits.


Diagrams


Whether you teach terminology about the human body, disease symptoms or medical tools, have several web pages with diagrams showing terms clearly labeled. A diagram of the human body with medical terminology labeled helps students who are visual learners. Students can refer to these pages when completing other assignments, too. You also can use these pages as tests or quizzes by removing the terms and having students supply them.

To encourage professional development, the IRS allows education and training expenses related to your career to be deducted from your taxable income. You must be working to be eligible for this deduction, and your expenses must be reasonable, work-related, and common in your industry.








Eligibility Requirements


To be eligible for deduction from your taxable income, education and training expenses must be required either by your employer or by law to keep your job, your particular position, or your salary (a good example is the continuing legal education requirements for lawyers to maintain membership in their state bar association), or practically necessary to maintain or improve your professional skills. Two exceptions exist, however. Expenses for re-training for another position are not eligible for deduction. And expenses necessary to meet the minimum requirements of your position are excluded (a law student working part-time at a law firm while studying for the bar exam, for example).


Deductible Expenses


Even if your education or training program qualifies for the IRS tax deduction, not all of your expenses can be deducted. Tuition, fees, books and supplies are all deductible, as are certain necessary travel expenses (commuting, for example). If you use your a car to commute, you may deduct actual expenses for fuel or you may use the standard IRS mileage deduction. If you have to miss work or take annual leave in order to take classes or perform research, you cannot deduct the value of this time as education and training expenses. Likewise, if your employer offers reimbursement of some or all of your expenses and you fail to claim it, you may not deduct these expenses from your taxable income.


Reporting Requirements


Reporting requirements differ depending on whether you are an employee or are self-employed. If you are an employee, you must complete Schedule A of Form 1040, and in most cases Form 2106. Your deduction will be limited to 2 percent of your adjusted gross income from Form 1040. If you are self-employed, you must complete Schedule C or Schedule F (depending on the nature of your position). Both employees and self-employed persons must report their claimed deductions on Form 1040.

Types Of Medicaid Waiver Programs In New Jersey

The state of New Jersey has three important Medicaid Waiver Programs to help disabled residents who are in a nursing facility, are in need of a nursing facility, or who are at-risk for needing this type of care. These programs are the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Waiver program, the Community Resources for People with Disabilities (CRPD) Waiver program and the AIDS Community Care Alternatives Program (ACCAP) Waiver program.


Traumatic Brain Injury








This waiver first came into effect in 1993, when it was approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. It was first renewed in 1996 and is renewable every five years. With 350 slots available, this waiver helps provide ambulatory people with community-based resources. These people must either currently reside in a nursing home or be at risk for placement in a nursing home. They must have also received their brain injury after turning 21 years of age, declared permanently disabled and meet income and resource limits set by the state's Medicaid program. Lastly, they must rate four or above on the Rancho Los Amigos Scale.


Community Resources for People with Disabilities


This waiver is renewable every five years. With 300 slots available, this waiver helps provide those in a nursing home or likely headed for a nursing home with resources they need to remain in or return to the community. Beneficiaries can be of any age, but they must have been declared disabled by the Social Security Administration. When determining a child's eligibility, the parents' income and resources are not counted and when determining an adult's eligibility the spouse's income is not counted.


AIDS Community Care Alternatives








This waiver first came into effect in 1987, when it was approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. It is renewable every five years. With 750 slots available, this waiver helps provide those who have been diagnosed with AIDS and are institutionalized or who need institutional care with New Jersey Title XIX Medicaid Services, case management services, private-duty nursing services and hospice care. This waiver program accepts those of any age who have been declared disabled by the Social Security Administration and have also been diagnosed with AIDS or those under 13 who have tested HIV positive. When determining a child's eligibility the parents' income and resources are not counted and when determining an adult's eligibility the spouse's income is not counted.
