Why Is The Ogt Being Replaced By The Act

All tests are not created equal.


High school students in Ohio must pass the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) to earn a diploma, as of 2010. However, by 2014 the ACT college admissions exam, along with other requirements, will replace the OGT. Officials cite several reasons why the ACT proves a better choice than the OGT.


The Need to Take More Rigorous Classes


Superintendent John Foley explained to a local Ohio ABC news affiliate that requiring students to take a more difficult, college-geared exam like the ACT may inspire high-school students to take more advanced, college-preparatory classes. If the reading passages and math problems on the ACT require higher levels of English and mathematics skills than the OGT, students may have no choice but to select classes that will assist them in preparing for such an exam.


The ACT Is an Accurate Gauge


Ohio educational leaders feel that the ACT, used for years by colleges to predict applicants' potential for success in college, accurately gauges academic achievement and ability. Therefore, the officials believe the ACT is a good choice as the OGT's replacement.


Other States Are Using the ACT


Other states have switched to using the ACT as a requirement for graduation and are pleased with the results. Therefore, Ohio officials feel that the ACT is a solid choice for their students.


The OGT Assesses Students Too Early


As of 2010, Ohio students take the OGT in 10th grade. If they pass the exam at that time, the students can graduate two years later if they meet all their course requirements. Ohio officials prefer potential graduates be assessed at a more advanced level than 10th grade. For that reason, they believe that the ACT is more appropriate for such a task.

Develop Listening Skills

While some people believe that individuals are born with listening skills or a lack thereof, many experts conclude that listening skills are developed over time through practice. To be a good listener, you must learn to manage the flow of thoughts in your mind. For example, if you're thinking about other work or bills while someone is speaking to you, you are not being a good listener. A good listener has the ability to completely focus on the person speaking to them. With practice, you can learn to improve and further develop your listening skills by gaining control over your thoughts.


Instructions


1. Face the person speaking to you and maintain eye contact.


2. Relax and really take in what the speaker is saying to you.


3. Maintain an open mind. For example, if the speaker is talking about a topic that you disagree with, hear them out first before simply dismissing what they're saying.


4. Visualize in your mind what the speaker is saying to you. For example, if the speaker is describing a boat trip they took, try to visualize the boat, the water, feel the breeze and really put yourself into the experience they're telling you about.


5. Refrain from interrupting the speaker and attempting to override what they're saying to you.








6. Ask questions of the speaker at opportune times. Proper times to ask questions are during pauses or breaks between different sections of the conversation or when you're not understanding something fully and you want more clarification.


7. Ask questions relevant to the topic at hand and don't try and steer the speaker off in a different direction causing them to lose their train of thought.


8. Empathize with the speaker and try to put yourself in their shoes.


9. Be attentive and give the speaker regular feedback to show you are maintaining interest in what they're telling you.








10. Take notice of any nonverbal cues the speaker is giving such as hand gestures and posture. By noticing these cues, it could put a different spin on the way you interpret what is being said.


11. Prevent your attention from being drawn away to other distractions such as background noise or chatter. Focus only on the speaker and block out the other distractions.

The cost of a private high school education can well exceed $3,000 a year or more, according to the CATO Institute, a well-recognized research organization. Even if your locality provides school vouchers to subsidize a Catholic high school education, the actual amount can still impose a financial hardship. As noted financial aid programs are in major cities across America, contact your local Catholic high schools and archdiocese to find out if similar programs for financial aid exist where you reside.


Big Shoulders--Chicago


The Big Shoulders program provides financial aid in the form of scholarships each year to more than 5,000 students. Aid is based on need and can extend for multiple years or be renewed by application each year. The program also provides opportunities for one-time emergency financial assistance. More than 17 Catholic high schools participate in the Chicago Big Shoulders program. In addition to tuition financial assistance, students may also be eligible for free lunch or reduced cost nutrition assistance.


Catholic Education Foundation--Los Angeles and Surrounding Areas


The foundation provides financial aid to students in the greater Los Angeles area, including the Santa Barbara, San Fernando and San Gabriel regions. More than 80,000 students have received aid since 1987 through the Tuition Awards Program (TAP) and Save Our Students (SOS) programs. The program provides financial aid to more than 1,500 high school students each year, at approximately $2,000 per student.


Milwaukee Parental Choice Program (MPCP)


The MPCP program provides financial aid to low-income families so they can provide their children with a Catholic high school education. The average scholarship amount is approximately $6,500. Milwaukee-area Catholic high schools that are accredited to participate in the program include Divine Savior Holy Angels, Marquette University High School, Messmer High School and Pius XI High School.


The Archdiocese of Washington Tuition Assistance--Washington, D.C., and Maryland


Needs-based financial aid and scholarship applications are accepted by the Archdiocese of Washington to assist students pursuing a Catholic high school education in the Washington and Maryland counties of Calvert, Charles, St. Mary's, Montgomery and Prince George. The archdiocese aims to make a Catholic education as affordable as possible, and families must apply each year to receive financial aid from the archdiocese.

What Types Of Food Contain Lipids

Trans-fats

What Does It Take To Become An Lpn







What Does It Take to Become an LPN?


Training programs to become an LPN---a Licensed Practical Nurse---usually take about one year to complete. A nurse in this position might also be referred to as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), but the LPN designation is more often used. Training classes can be offered by hospitals, vocational education programs, technical college programs and community colleges. The student will test for certification by taking the NCLEX-PN. This test will certify them to work as a LPN.


Anatomy and Physiology


Classes in anatomy and physiology will teach the student the intricate workings of the human body. She will learn about the various systems that make up the body---the circulatory system, digestive system, nervous system, respiratory system and the musculoskeletal system. The class will usually require participation in an anatomy and physiology lab. This lab will usually require participation in dissection activities.


Basic Nursing Skills








The fundamentals of nursing course will train the student in performing basic clinical skills. These skills will be used when working with patients. The student nurse will learn take blood pressure readings and write down their findings in the patient's chart. He'll learn perform CPR, take a pulse and take a patient's temperature. He'll also learn other basic care skills, such as bedside nursing care, change a patient's bedding and apply dressings.


Administration of Drugs


The student will receive training in the administration of medications. She'll need to know basic math facts that pertain to dosage measurements, and will learn read a chart and measure the proper dosage of medication prescribed. She'll study the pharmaceutical terms and will become familiar with the terminology required when working with medications, as well as learn administer injections and immunizations. Some LPNs are allowed to start IVs, but this often requires advanced training and certification.


Nursing Theory


The theoretical part of the training will teach about the different types of medicinal situations in which you'll be working. These classes will coincide with the clinical training listed in the following section. The nursing student will learn relate to pediatric patients and care for their situations, as well as relate to geriatric patients and the various needs they'll have in a hospital setting. Students also learn about pre-surgical and post-surgical care, deal with mental health patients and care for a mother in labor and her newborn child.


Clinical Training


The student nurse will be required to spend part of their education doing on-the-job training in various hospital and clinical situations they'll come across as a nurse. The students will apply the skills they have learned in their classes, while working in rotations through the various departments in which they've studied. They might work in the maternity-child unit, the surgical unit, the pediatric unit and geriatrics. They'll have hands-on training in working with each of these medical situations. They might also work in mental health clinics.

Teach Chunking When Writing Essays

Chunking can help students break down a writing prompt into blocks of information.


In essay writing, the practice of "chunking" is involved in the prewriting and research process, though it is also part of actually writing the piece. Chunks are blocks of information that include ideas such as the main topic of an essay, evidence, and commentary. Using chunks in your paper will allow you to organize it in a way that will create a sense of flow, making your essay easy to follow and reference. Teaching this process to students involves some technique.


Instructions








1. Give your students a prompt that has to deal with a topic that they are likely not familiar with. This can be about any topic regardless of class subject, from language arts or science to history. The idea is to help students start thinking about prompts critically and forming them into chunks so they can begin research; not necessarily knowing the answer right away.


2. Demonstrate how the prompt can be broken down into several chunks of information, even though the subject is not familiar. For example, if the prompt is "How does Orwell define the role of government in Animal Farm? What are the consequences of this role?" Chunks will include a synopsis of Animal Farm, a description of government as defined by Orwell, conflicts in the book caused by government, and ways the logic in the book can be applied to real world government.








3. Use the chunks formed during this practice to create an outline that will guide the writing process. Have students practice this process several times both as a class and independently. From the chunks defined in this process, students should be able to form a thesis statement that will guide the essay.


4. Prompt students to expand their outline to include a more detailed look at the chunks they organized. Within each chunk will be information such as the statement being claimed, the evidence to support this claim from the text or from a secondary source, commentary about this information, and a concluding statement that transitions the reader to the next argument.

Homeschool Your Asperger'S Child

HOMESCHOOL YOUR ASPERGER'S CHILD


Homeschooling is a blessing and allows you to feel confident knowing that you are giving your children the absolute best education possible. When homeschooling a child on the autism spectrum, there can be specific and unique challenges. My older daughter has Asperger's and has been homeschooled for most of her life. I hope this article will help give those of you homeschooling your children on the spectrum a little support and advice from one who has tried it all and succeeded in homeschooling a child with Asperger's.








Instructions


1. Chill. Things will change gradually, but they will change. Sometimes fear can sneak into your mind (fear about what the future holds for your child, fear that your child won't make friends, fear of what others might think) but try to block these thoughts out and only focus on what you can do today, just today, that will make your child progress a little and connect with you and the world around them a little bit more. Every progression is huge, and if there is any step back, which there probably will be, it is not permenant.


You probably chose homeschooling for your Asperger's child because:


1. The school they were going to could not help or support your child.


2. Your child was being bullied to the point of depression.


3. You knew that you could reach your child in a way that nobody else could.


4. You knew that you could give your child the best education they could get.


These are all great reasons why you have decided to homeschool your Asperger's child.


2. Here are some tips that I have found really helps with the day.


1. TRY WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT TO KEEP A RIGID STRUCTURE. All children crave structure, but a child with Asperger's desperately needs it. It is structure during their day that allows them to feel confident that all is well in the world and that they can be sure that you know what is going on. It helps them to relax and helps them to trust you. If your child is anything like my daughter, they will resist this structure, especially if there wasn't enough structure before. Just keep reinforcing the structure. Keep doing it. Make a schedule for the day and post it on the wall where our child can see it. If your child is not reading well yet, read them the schedule aloud at the same time every morning before you start the day. Make sure that they know that you are in control and that you know what is going on.


2. MAKE ART A BIG PART OF YOUR DAY. Arts and crafts are healing and really help your child connect to the world around them. It does wonders for my daughter to have her creating a project and using her hand to mold something out of clay. They immediately calm and focus in a way that they are not able to do normally. my top choices for art are : CLAY AND POTTERY, PAINTING,and BASKETRY.


3. 3. GO OUTSIDE OFTEN AND GET INTO NATURE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN WITH THEM. Asperger's children have a deep connection to nature and the natural world. They commune with the animals and the plants, and feel connected to this world when they are around them. Go on hikes, take them to see a waterfall, take them into the woods for a nature drawing, or just to sit and listen to the trees. They LOVE it.


4. GET INVOLVED WITH HORSE THERAPY. Horses can work wonders for the emotional wellbeing of your Asperger's child. Horses can really connect with your child in a way that is hard for them to do with people. It is almost like your child can read their movements and communicate with them without words. It's great.








4. 5. INVEST IN ZOME TOOLS, LEOGS, K-NEX, OR ANY BUILDING TOY. Not only are these toys extremely theraputic, they really get your child to slow down, create, and focus. I don't know what we would do without them, and when our daughter is taking a break from her schoolwork, these toys really feed her need to use her hands and make something.

Spelling Bee Games

Spelling Bees allow children to showcase their spelling skills while learning and having fun.


Spelling bees are one of the most popular and recognizable activities for grade school children. According to The Big Book of Spelling Tests, by Orin Hargraves, "While there are some new twists [on the spelling bee], the same basic principle has remained in effect since the mid-twentieth century." For fun without the seriousness of an actual Spelling Bee, try some in class or home variations that turn the Bee into a game and allow children to practice their spelling. Innovations in technology and learning styles have done little to change the core effectiveness and fun of a spelling bee.








Chalk Board Spelling Game


In its simplest and original form, the Spelling Bee challenges students to spell words individually. For in-class practice before a Bee and a bit of fun, try this simple but effective spelling game. Students enjoy the competition while learning about word construction and displaying their knowledge of the English language. Hand out small chalk boards to each member of the class and direct them to spell out the word and hold it up. Wrong answers get eliminated each round. Try offering the bonus prize to the quickest correct answer.


Foreign Language Bee Games


For foreign language teachers, this practice Bee game might come in handy for students to retain particular words and their spelling. Educators should create a word bank of simple articles, nouns or verbs that the students have already learned or might be aware of from outside of class. Randomly select students from the class and have them come up in front of the group to either spell a word out loud or correctly write it on the board.

Divide the students up into small groups of 3 or 4 depending on class size. Use a word bank to go around the room and question the groups in order. Allow the teams to converse privately for a few minutes before having a spokesperson spell the word aloud. When a team answers incorrectly, move to the next group and let them try to spell the word. Assign points based on each right or wrong answer and keep track on a chalk or whiteboard.

Make Traffic Light Cookies With A Duplo Block

A Duplo block is a rectangle shape with three circles. It's perfect for cutting out sugar cookies in the shape of a traffic light. Use colored mini baking bits to decorate the cookies with red, yellow and green. At the same time, teach children about traffic lights and safety with this memorable activity.


Instructions


1. Divide the colored mini baking bits so you have a pile of red, yellow and green. Take time to explain the meaning of each color on a traffic light as the child sorts.


2. Roll out the refrigerated cookie dough onto a floured surface.








3. Flour a Duplo block and press it into the cookie dough just enough to make an impression in the dough. When the block is lifted, you have a rectangle cookie with three circle impressions. Repeat this step across the cookie dough until you have covered the dough with rows of Duplo rectangles.


4. Cut apart the rectangles with a spatula and place all the traffic light cookies on a baking sheet.


5. Place the appropriate color of mini baking bits in each of the three circles on top of the cookies. Point out the location of each color and review the meaning with the child.








6. Bake your traffic light cookies for the amount of time indicated by the directions.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Traditional Education

Traditional schools provide teachers who can instruct students in a number of disciplines.


The traditional educational model has been widely accepted in the United States for generations. However, it has drawbacks alongside its advantages, and may not even be necessary for all students. Abraham Lincoln, former president of the United States, only had 50 weeks of traditional schooling, but was considered highly educated. His writings and success point to an individual who was highly educated -- just not in a traditional manner. In an ideal world, education would be tailored to a child's individual needs, whether traditional or not. Both sides of the issue bear examination.








Advantage: Everyone Has the Opportunity to Receive an Education


Not every child has parents who are able to offer her a nontraditional education such as homeschooling or enrollment in an alternative educational environment, such as small schools targeted towards the arts, for example. Traditional education in the United States includes public schools, which are free of charge for every student. Without the opportunities offered by these schools, many children would likely be unable to read or perform even basic math calculations. The goal of traditional education is to ensure that all children have the same educational opportunities, although in reality, this may not always be the case.


Advantage: Offer a Wide Range of Opportunities








The large number of students who attend traditional schools ensure that the schools receive large amounts of funding, either through taxes or tuition. The result is that many schools are able to offer a wide range of both academic and extracurricular activities at no or little cost to the student. Many traditional schools employ a large number of teachers in areas ranging from chemistry to art. Traditional schools also offer extracurricular programs, often including swimming, football and academic clubs. Smaller nontraditional schools or homeschools often must struggle to get these same opportunities for their students.


Disadvantage: One Size Does Not Fit All


Traditional education expects students to learn skills at the same rate. While one student may be ready to read at age five or earlier, another may not show the same readiness until he is eight. While both students have the ability to learn and will eventually be readers, traditional education does not recognize this. Students who are quick learners often become bored or disruptive, while students who are less quick to assimilate information are labeled as learning-disabled. The result is often that both learners are unable to meet their full potential.


Disadvantage: Social Problems Are Condensed Into a Small Space


It is not uncommon to find schools with more than 1,000 students enrolled. The average enrollment for a middle school in Nevada as of 2009 is 996 students, according to a report prepared by Education Information and Accountability Services. One of the results of high enrollment is that schools become areas with high concentrations of crime. Theft, assault and drugs are commonplace in many schools today. Rape and murder, along with gang violence and intimidation, are also not unheard of in some schools. Behavior problems such as defiance, rudeness and bullying take on gargantuan proportions in a classroom where a teacher is attempting to instruct 30 or more students. Effective academic learning simply cannot occur in such an environment.

Iowa


The wrestling program at the University of Iowa won three consecutive national titles in 2008, 2009 and 2010 to bring its total number of NCAA championships in the sport to 23. The Iowa City university ranks second with that number of titles, but all of its winning has come in the last 35 years. The school's wrestling program started in 1911 and won its first title in 1975 under the guidance of coach Gary Kurdelmeier. In 1976, assistant Dan Gable, the former Iowa State and Olympic star, took over the Hawkeye program, and vaulted the squad to a dominating position with 15 NCAA titles and 21 straight conference crowns. From 1978 to 1986, Iowa won nine national titles in a row. Gable retired in 1997 with a career record of 355-21-5. Former Iowa athlete Tom Brands is the current coach of the Hawkeyes, and the team has returned to championship form.

Iowa State


Iowa State University has eight NCAA wrestling titles on its resume, but none since 1987. That championship is a significant one because it broke the nine-year national title run of Iowa, the team that was coached by former Cyclone star Dan Gable. Gable is a key figure in the history of Iowa State wrestling, as he is well known for his successes on the mat there, where he lost just one match, his very last one, during his four-year run. Gable also was a 1972 OIympic gold medalist, a tournament in which he was not scored upon. Cael Sanderson is another prominent name in the school's history as a four-time national champion. Design a masterpiece that lasts decades after you pass on. Learn things in an architecture program that ultimately affect people's lives. You're skills could make the difference as to whether someone enjoys coming to work--or dreads coming in.








Instructions


1. Go through your course catalog for the architecture program you want to take. Make sure that it fits your degree program. Register as soon as possible, some class fill up quickly.


2. Purchase your books and architecture equipment. Take the book to a quite place and read it thoroughly before the course starts. Start practicing for some of the exercises if you have some prior architectural background. Get with an experienced architect to help you with the basics if you don't have prior experience.


3. Grab the work desk closest to your instructor. Since architecture courses are mostly hands on, you want to follow your professor. Don't miss any architecture related muscle mechanics that your professor demonstrates. Go out of your way to take the front desk or front row seating.








4. Take notes during your classes to catch things your textbook doesn't cover. These come in handy during the written exams. Combine this with text book studying, pay particular attention to the learning objectives. You should be able to do the architecture program activities that the learning objectives describe.


5. Do your architecture program projects as if they were the test. Depending on length and complexity, the architecture instructor could assign hefty grade percentages to each project. Don't hesitate to ask questions, from either the instructor or the other students.


6. Spend extra time after class to work on your architecture program related assignments. Don't neglect note studying, as you want to study for written exams before the course starts. Contact your professor, or a more experienced architecture student, if you have questions during these after-class study periods.

Western Law School Admission Requirements

Western Law School accepts applications under four categories.


Western Law School is affiliated with the University of Western Ontario and is located in London, Ontario. Western Law School offers first-year admission under four categories: "mature," defined as candidates who have at least five years of non-university experience since leaving high school and have attended university for at least two years; "access," defined as candidates whose undergraduate performance has been affected by some significant disability; "Aboriginal," defined as members of First Nations, Inuit and Métis; and "general," which encompasses everyone not in the other three categories.


Admissions Test








Applicants in all four categories are required to take the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) before being considered for admission. According to Western Law School's admissions website, the February test date is the last LSAT score the school will accept for admission in September of the same year. The median LSAT score for admitted applicants in the general category is 161, which is the 82nd percentile. Competitive applicants in the Aboriginal category score above the 60th percentile, while those in the mature and access categories score above the 65th percentile. The admissions committee will consider all LSAT scores if the applicant has taken the test more than once within the past five years, but will place more emphasis on the higher score.








Undergraduate Degree


All applicants must hold an undergraduate degree to be considered for admission, with the exception of applicants in the mature category, who may apply if they have completed two years of study. The admissions committee requires at least a three-year undergraduate degree for the general, Aboriginal and access categories, although most successful applicants in the general category hold at least a four-year honors degree. The admissions department places more emphasis on grades earned in the last two years of undergraduate study. The median grade point average for admitted students in the general category is 3.7, according to the school's admissions website. Competitive applicants in the Aboriginal, mature and access categories have an overall grade point average of 3.3.


Personal Statement


All applicants are required to write a personal statement, the purpose of which is to allow candidates to show the admissions committee information that does not appear on other parts of the application. The admissions website suggests using the personal statement to show the applicant's strengths in academic or other achievements, or to show how the candidate has overcome significant obstacles.


Letters of Recommendation


Applicants in the general category must submit two letters of recommendation. One of these letters must be an academic reference. Letters of recommendation are not required for the other categories, but will be considered if sent.

Working with disabled children requires different skills than working with disabled adults.


The skills required of people working with the disabled vary greatly. Professionals working with people in wheelchairs possess a different skill set than those working with individuals who have intellectual challenges. Working with the disabled in any capacity requires knowledge of disabilities and the manner in which disabilities affect individuals mentally and physically. Colleges and universities through the United States offer certificate and degree programs for working with the disabled.


Medical Skills


Many working with disabled people required medical knowledge and skills. Personal or home care attendants must understand the full nature of each patient's disability and what do to in cases of emergency. Some states require certification from personal or home aides; others do not. The National Association for Home Care and Hospice certifies those who complete a 75-hour educational course and pass a written exam. Nurses working with the disabled have specialized training related to the disability they work with. Physical therapists, who often work with the disabled, possess a strong knowledge of human anatomy and how disabilities affect and alter traditional anatomy.


Communication Skills


Everyone who works with the disabled needs specialized communication skills. Special education teacher training programs impart these skills.


Those working with physically disabled citizens must understand the perspective of those individuals and possess commutation skills to express this. For instance, a person in a wheelchair might feel he struggles daily with living in a largely inaccessible world. An ability to empathize proves important.


Psychology Skills


Social workers, teachers, home care specialists, nurses, doctors, physical therapists and everyone one else working with disabled citizens must understand the psychology of living with a disability. Many who have disabilities have related problems such as depression and insecurity. Working with the disabled requires a constant sensitivity to such problems and awareness of adapt to and work with their emergence. This proves particularly important for those working with individuals who become disabled later in life and suffer traditional stages of grief such as denial, anger and bargaining. Professionals working with disabled citizens learn mechanisms and skills for interpreting and working with the psychological state of the disabled through training programs and education.


Specialty Skills


Certain positions working with the disabled require very specialized skills. Educators need a similar skill set, but with regards to developing education plans for individual students and groups with traditional and nontraditional methods.

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) used to be thought of only as a warmup to the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). While this is still one of the uses of the PSAT, the exam has grown to be important in its own right.

The PSAT offers a glimpse of a student's strengths and weaknesses as she prepares for college. She can then work on those areas in which she scored low or where improvement is desired.








Plan for College


Deciding where to go to college is difficult, and the PSAT can help you see where you might fit in best. If the PSAT predicts you will get a 900 on the SAT, then you might not want to apply to a school where the average is 1,400 for incoming freshmen. The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is required for admission into most MBA programs in the United States, and is a source of anxiety for many students who feel intimidated by standardized tests. The full course spans seven weeks and 42 hours of instruction, and provides students with 15 specialized lesson books that use actual GMAT questions to help students prepare. Eating the right foods is a very important part of staying healthy. The services that nutritionists and dietitians provide have become more important as more people try to improve their eating habits. These states may require licensees to have a nutrition-related master's or doctoral degree and pass a state approved exam. Membership with the American Board of Nutrition or a similar organization may also be required.


Types


There are fewer variations of nutritionists than there are of dietitians. There are management, clinical and community dietitians. Management dietitians develop and supervise meal plans for large facilities including schools and prisons. Clinical dietitians collaborate with other health care professionals to plan meal programs for patients. Community dietitians work for agencies that teach people eat healthy.


The two main types of nutritionists are those that provide services to customers as consultants and those that work for companies in product research and development.

Home School Your 4 Year Old Child

Four-year-old children are wild and wonderful. In the United States, formal education is not required for preschool children. Children of this age are at a beautiful stage of development and have a great capacity to learn. Homeschooling can be used in replacement for or to supplement the preschool experience. Four-year-old children differ in development, and some may be able to tolerate schoolwork in a traditional setting; however, all preschool curriculum should include hands-on activities in addition to paper and pencil work.

Books Are Your Friends


1. Have books available to read to your 4-year-old. Whether you buy books or go to the library, offer a wide variety of books for young children. Make sure some books are in places your child can reach. Preschool children love to pretend to read and make up their own stories based on the pictures in books.








2. Read to your child. Most child development experts recommend at least 20 minutes of reading time a day. This can be done easily before bed or any time that is convenient for you.


3. Let your child see you reading. Do not save all your personal reading time for after your children are in bed. Children will do as you do, and seeing you read will make them want to read as well.


Create a Classroom


4. Realize that for many 4-year-old children, this is the last year before going to kindergarten. Whether your child goes to preschool or not, it is useful to have a school area in your home. This can be as simple as a child-size table and chairs next to a blank wall. It does not need to take up much space, though you can make it as elaborate as you wish.


5. Use a daily calendar station with your child. This can be in the school area of your home or be your family's calendar. As often as you can, talk about which day of the week it is, how many days are in the month and what special events are coming up. School supply stores have fun calendars you can purchase, but your child might enjoy making a homemade version.


6. Do workbook pages or crafts at the child's school area. This helps your 4-year-old get into the routine of doing schoolwork as well as keeping mess confined to the same place each day.


7. Use other classroom techniques that can work at home. Working on a schedule the same time each day can help you stay on track and give your 4-year-old a feeling of consistency.


Buy or Make Your Own Curriculum


8. Peruse school supply stores and online providers for ready-made preschool curriculum for homeschoolers. Often activities and worksheets are availability to download, though some companies charge for these services.


9. Create your own curriculum. Decide on themes for each month of the year. For instance, January's theme could be winter, and February's theme could be African American history. Any topic can be taught to 4-year-old children if you use books and materials geared to their age. For instance, for February you could read children's books about Martin Luther King Jr. or African American folktales.


10. Make sure your curriculum offers something for all subjects. Look online for science experiments for little hands as well as math games or phonics tips. Experiments can be as simple as making a miniocean with a little dirt and water with blue food coloring in a bottle. Tilt the bottle to show how tides in the ocean work.


11. Homeschool your child even if she attends regular preschool. Ask to review the school's curriculum and decide what you need to supplement at home.

Drop Out Of A Fraternity

If you find that the fraternity you have joined isn't a good fit, you don't have to stay. You can "depledge," although it may cost you some money. Here are the steps.


Instructions


1. Visit the Greek affairs office of your college or university and find out the process for official depledging. Speak with an advisor about the subject so you have all the information.


2. Learn the protocol to drop out before you mention your decision with anyone in your organization. Speak with your parents, guardians or mentors on your decision and ask for their support.


3. Speak with the President or Vice President of your fraternity about your decision. Obtain the contact information for the national office so you can also inform them personally of your decision.


4. Inform your fraternity, Greek affairs offices and your national chapter office of the official date that you intend to leave your fraternity. Be prepared for some hard feelings and possible fees for depledging.


5. Obtain legal council if necessary should the depledging process become arduous or you are harassed by fraternity members. This treatment is rare but can happen. Turn in your pin and any other viable information, documents or property of the fraternity.
