There are more than 500 accredited colleges and universities in California.
Pursuing higher education and obtaining degrees can open a lot of career doors for you. In California there are a multitude of options available for earning a degree. You can obtain an associate's, bachelor's or master's degree and even pursue a doctorate degree. To do so you will need to gain acceptance to an accredited school and complete all the required coursework for your desired degree.
Instructions
1. Decide what kind of degree you want to pursue. Determine which field you want to work in and what job in that field you want to have. Find out what kind of degree is needed for that job. Associate's degrees generally require 60 hours of course work, while bachelor's degrees require 120. Once you have your bachelor's degree, a master's degree usually takes another two years to complete.
2. Research accredited colleges and universities in California to find out which ones offer the degree you want. See the resources for a list of California colleges and universities.
3. Apply to accredited schools. Submit applications to California colleges and universities that interest you. Submit an application online via the school's website, call and request an application be sent to you or visit the school in person to obtain one. Most colleges charge an application fee and you will need to have your high school transcripts sent to the admissions offices of the colleges to which you are applying.
4. Once you have been accepted to an accredited California college, enroll in classes and pay your tuition. Once you have completed all the required coursework for your degree you will be awarded that degree.
5. You can also choose to take your classes at home on your computer by attending an online school. The application process will be the same as for a regular school. See the resources for a list of accredited online schools in California.

Funds from an employee 401k plan can only be rolled over into one of two types of accounts without incurring costly tax penalties. Those two rollover options include transfer into a new 401k account with a new employer or deposit into an individual retirement account (IRA). There are no tax-deferred savings for using funds from a 401k toward furthering education or for education savings programs with tax benefits such as 529 plans.
Rollover Into a New 401k Account
When a 401k account holder leaves one employer to work for another, he typically is offered several options. He can withdraw the accumulated funds from a 401k plan, declare an account in which to rollover the funds or keep the funds in the current account. Employees going to work for a new employer that offers a 401k plan usually benefit by enrolling in the new plan and rolling over all accumulated funds from the old 401k into the new 401k.
Rollover Into an IRA
An IRA offers tax-deferred benefits similar to 401k programs. An employee who changes jobs often is not enrolled in a 401k plan long enough for deposited funds to prosper as the plan progresses. Consolidation of accounts is preferable to keeping multiple accounts with a string of former employers. The IRA offers a safe rollover vehicle for consolidating 401k funds without encountering any taxation for withdrawal or any tax penalties resulting from early withdrawal.
The 529 Account Management
A 529 account allows savings to be deposited for investment growth without taxation on accumulated interest. The funds also are tax-free when used to pay for any qualified costs of higher education. The available monies for various savings plans should be divided to include regular 529 deposits by anyone anticipating college costs. A 529 college fund need not be separated for individual children, and it can be used for adults in the family as well.
Paying Into a 529 Account From an IRA or a 401k
Payments into a 529 college fund account are not tax-free when made from an IRA, but early withdrawal penalties are waived for IRA funds when used for higher education of the account holder or his children or grandchildren. Funds from a 401k are not given any tax breaks when used for a 529 or for education. The 401k funds are best used by rolling them over into an IRA and paying for education costs directly.

Business and personal expenses may appear mingled when you travel.
Today, many businesses and state agencies have replaced the expense account with reimbursement plans. This reimbursement plan prevents employees from using corporate or state expense accounts for other reasons than approved expenditures. However, you may find it difficult to keep track of the items on the receipts; at times personal expenses become mixed with business expenses and you are responsible for reporting the problem and only accepting the reimbursement that you are owed for official business. When this happens, you will be asked to write a letter to explain the receipts and to clarify which expenses need to be reimbursed.
Instructions
1. Begin the letter by typing the date. Skip a line and type the contact person's name and title, the company name, and the company address on separate lines. Skip another line space and type "Dear Ms./Mr. (Last name)" followed by a colon.
2. Identify yourself and explain the purpose for your letter immediately. For example, "My name is Jill Harrison from the Accounting Department, and I am writing to explain my receipts from my recent business-related trip to Akron to clarify which items I should be reimbursed for and which are my personal expenses that do not require reimbursement."
3. Detail the expenses that should be reimbursed in a numbered list, and refer to the appropriate receipt and the date of the receipt to assist the person processing the reimbursement. If your organization works on a per diem basis, on which you are allotted only a specific dollar amount for food, lodging or other items per day, break down the expenses per day so the processor can see if you stayed under the per diem amount.
4. List expenses that appeared on the receipts that are your personal expenses. You do not need to explain what these are, just state that it is your personal charge. Give a total of these expenses as well. Your business or organization may also ask you to remove the relevant tax charges related to these personal items from the reimbursement amount.
5. Provide the totals at the end of what you should be reimbursed for, along with the total of what you are refusing reimbursement for. These two numbers should add up to the total dollar amount on the receipts. Give the dollar amount you are requesting reimbursement for and the dollar amount you are refusing reimbursement for; often organizations require you to put these statements in clear language for legal reasons.
6. Thank the processor for his or her time and apologize for the inconvenience of having to sort through the receipts. Provide your work telephone number and email address in case he or she has any questions about the charges on the receipts.
7. Close the letter by typing "Sincerely," and skip three line spaces. Type your full name and title. Print the letter on company letterhead and sign your name above the typed name. Make a copy of both the letter and the receipts and retain them for your records. Mail the letter to the contact person who will process the reimbursement.

Metals that conduct heat include gold, aluminum, copper and silver.
Of the ways to conduct heat, metals are the best. Their thermal conductivity is high, with some conducting heat better than others. The best metals for heat conductivity are gold, aluminum, copper and silver, and this is measured through watts per-kelvin meter, or k (W/m K).
Gold
Gold is among the best metals for heat conductivity because it does not oxidize when exposed to air, and it is very resistant to corrosion, thus making it useful in printed circuit boards and electrical connectors. It is also due to its ability to conduct heat efficiently that gold is used in a variety of appliances ranging from televisions, cellular phones and even washing machines.
Aluminum
Aluminum conducts heat and is often used in cookware.
Aluminum is one of the best metals for heat conductivity next to copper, and is ideal for applications where heat exchangers are required. Because it is so reactive, aluminum is useful as an additive or catalyst in chemical fusions, which can include use in ammonium nitrate explosives to intensify the explosive power. In more mundane settings, aluminum is also used in frying pans and cooking pots to conduct heat.
Copper
Copper is considered the best metal for heat conductivity. In part, this is due to the fact that it has a high melting point and does not rust. It is used in heat sinks, in televisions, computers and disk drives. It is also used as the coating on the bottom of saucepans, in car radiators, hot water tanks and under-floor heating systems.
Silver
Silver also has a high resistance to corrosion and is used in an array of high-end electronics and circuit boards. It is often used in conductive pastes that conduct heat away from a computer's cpu. Silver-coated quartz tiles provided protection to NASA's Magellan spacecraft that orbited Venus.

Parapsychology, a formal term for the study of psychic phenomena, has been a controversial issue in scientific circles for decades. Parapsychologists insist that telepathy, clairvoyance, mind-reading and other psychic subjects should be studied in a scientific manner like abnormal psychology and other types of psychology. Formal Parapsychology training is hard to find, but there are classes and opportunities to learn about the field if you look in the right places.
Instructions
1. Read books and articles on paranormal phenomena. Do an Internet search for books on subjects like telepathy, psychokinesis and mediums, then buy them or borrow them from the library for some informal but thorough training.
2. Find experts in the field and learn from them. You can find them through the American Association for Parapsychology and other organizations.

Fashion design is an interesting subject to learn due to its infusion of marketing, creativity and individuality. Much like art, each piece and line is different, taking from a variety of inspiration points. Fashion is also something that can be observed on a daily basis through the clothing that is worn, making it ever present in our lives. This makes it a subject that can be studied from an early age by children. Fashion design can be taught to kids in a variety of ways.
Instructions
1. Have kids identify their personal style. Individuality is the starting point for all fashion design. Give each child a piece of paper and have them brainstorm, writing down key words that they feel describes what they like to wear and the personality traits and interests that inspire their wardrobe.
2. Help kids to create their own mood boards. Designers create mood boards as inspiration for each new fashion line. They serve as a point of reference to look back on while creating the line. Have kids cut out pictures that inspire them and paste them onto a piece of poster board. Photos can be anything from landscapes with beautiful colors, to people that they admire and screen shots from their favorite movies. They can also include words on their inspiration board.
3. Instruct kids to draw clothing inspired by their mood board and personal style. Show them examples of designer sketches and pieces from magazines. Have them draw or paint at least three different designs and put them on display on a piece of poster board.
4. Help kids to name their new "design company," and create a logo for it.They may choose to name it after themselves or select something new entirely. Have them draw their own logo and paste it onto the poster board with their designs.
5. Have kids present their new line to the group. This presentation should include displaying the inspiration board and talking about why each aspect inspired the line. They should then discuss the individual pieces that they created and what they like about it, along with who would wear them. You may also decide to have kids detail this information in essay form, depending on the age group.

So, you want to know just how big that circle you are looking at is. You wonder to yourself just how I am going to be able to figure this out and be accurate without a mathematician to aid me in my quest. It is not nearly as complex as one would imagine with a few simple straight-line measurements.
Instructions
Perimeter of a Circle
1. Start by finding the diameter of the circle. The diameter of a circle is the longest straight line that you can measure along a circle from one point to another. Once you have determined the length of the diameter of the circle you will be better able to determine what the circumference or perimeter of the circle is.
2. Use the diameter of the circle that you have acquired to aid you in the determination of the perimeter of the circle. You will take the diameter of the circle that you have and you will then multiply it by the value pi. The value of pi is a given at 3.14 in most cases and in its simplest form, if you would like to be more accurate you can carry it out to more decimal places if you like.
3. Apply the information to determine the circumference or diameter through examples. If the diameter of the circle is 15 and then you multiply that by pi or 3.14 you will get a distance of 47.1 units as a perimeter. Make sure that you use the proper units when you state the answer that you get for the problem.
4. Determine if the length that you have in your problem is a radius or a diameter. If it is a radii it will need doubled or multiply it by 2 in order to get the right answer for your problem about the perimeter of the circle.

The Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure are applicable to cases appealed to a federal appellate (circuit) court from a federal district court. The notice of appeal is filed in the lower court to indicate that a party to the case intends to file an appeal. The Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure, particularly rules 3 through 6, govern the timeliness and content of an appeal notice.
Timely Appeal
In a civil case, unless the United States is a party to the suit or certain motions are filed after the entry of an order, the notice of appeal must be filed with the district clerk within 30 days after the judgment or order appealed from is entered. If the United States is a party, any party can file the notice within 60 days of the order. Once an appeal has been filed, other parties have at least 14 days to file another appeal. In a criminal case, the notice of appeal must be filed in the district court within 10 days; the government has 30 days.
Filing
The notice of appeal is filed with the clerk of the district court. Enough copies must be provided for the clerk to serve a copy on the counsel of each party, excluding the party filing the appeal (called the appellant). Simply by filing the notice of appeal and doing nothing further, the appellant invokes the jurisdiction of the appellate court to at least act in a way it deems appropriate with regard to the appeal. This can include dismissing the case or providing additional time to file an appellate brief.
Service
As mentioned, the responsibility of serving the notice of appeal on the parties belongs with the district court clerk. The failure of the clerk to fulfill these duties does not affect the validity of the appeal. The clerk also furnishes the court of appeals named in the notice with a copy of the notice and of docket entries. The district court clerk collects any fees associated with filing the notice of appeal that are due at the time of filing.
Contents
The notice of appeal must identify the parties filing the appeal, the order or judgment being appealed and the court of appeals to which the appeal is taken. The rules take a lenient approach to the content of the appeal, specifying that an appeal should not be dismissed for informality of the notice or from failure to name as an appellant a party whose intent to appeal is evident from the content of the notice. The naming of a single individual capable of representing a class is sufficient in appeals of a class action, whether or not the class has been certified. Extension of Time
Any party can move the district court for an extension of time to file a notice of appeal. To do so, a motion for extension must be filed within 30 days of the normal deadline. The motion must show either a good cause for the extension or that the deadline was missed for "excusable neglect." The extension of time, in either a civil or criminal case, cannot exceed 30 days after the original deadline or 10 days after the extension is granted, whichever is later.

College placement exams can include a number of tests or exams required by college and universities. College board tests range from individual school exams needed for entrance to the popular ACT and SAT exams. High school students usually take the tests in their senior year, yet the exams can be taken in other grade levels as well. Good study habits can help.
Set a Schedule
Set a certain time frame from 30 to 45 minutes a day to do quick reviews. Do not make the study periods too long to avoid burnout. Reward yourself at the end of each week wherein no study sessions were missed by giving yourself a treat such as watching a favorite movie.
Practice Tests
Take practice tests using online tools or guides checked out at a local library. Focus on weak areas. College placement tests focus on a wide range of subjects including math, reading and writing skills. Use practice tests to determine your strengths and weaknesses and spend extra time on those areas.
Pretests
Visit a testing center and take pretests. Pretests are different from practice tests that are taken at home. A pretest will allow you to experience the same environment in which the actual test will be given. The same computer program and other tools are available. You can get used to the surroundings and see how you react to the test. The test is exactly like the real test, but will not be scored.
Understand the Test
Learn how the test is scored and what time allotments are available for each section. Most schools or test centers have guides or pamphlets available for free. Ask your guidance counselor for information. For colleges call the main information line for assistance and ask for their testing center.
Manage Time
Many tests are timed. Discover a method that works best to keep within the testing time limit. If time runs out, any unanswered questions may be marked against you, resulting in a deduction of points. Learn set a steady pace taking the exam without rushing. Take practice tests and time how long each question should take to answer. Do not rush, but if a question is taking too much time, it is better to guess than leave it blank. Do not waste time reading instructions. Instructions for each section will be exactly the same on the pretest and practice tests. Bring a nonbeeping stopwatch to the exam center. Before beginning each section, write down when the test will end. Set the watch 10 minutes prior to that.

Loans for most college students are necessary to pay for the ever-increasing cost of acquiring higher education. Upon graduating, people can find themselves in financial difficulty and may need to ask for a deferment. That deferment does not come without penalty. That penalty is the interest that accumulates while the loan is in deferment. Therefore, it is important to weigh the costs before taking a deferment.
Instructions
1. Determine the current amount owed on the student loan. This amount is available through the lending institution or company that financed the loan.
2. Ascertain the current interest rate on the student loan. Again, this number is available through the lending institution or corporation that financed the loan.
3. Take the loan balance and multiply it by the loan interest rate. This figure is the amount of additional funds owed on the balance for each year of the deferment. Therefore, if the loan deferment is two years in length you would simply double the figure.
4. Compute the increase in the monthly payment a deferment would cause by taking the figure from Step 3 and divide it by the number of monthly payments still due on the loan. This figure assumes that the payment plan is not graduated. On graduated plans, the individual loan structure determines the monthly payment and this computation will not accurately reflect the monthly increase.

Vigorously representing the interests of a client is the job of an attorney. To do so he must go into the enterprise with a clear conscience. If any conflict exists in a case that would impede his work, a lawyer must seriously consider whether to take the case. The study of legal ethics helps an attorney traverse the complex grounds of attorney-client relationships.

The American Bar Association Model Rules spell out professional rules of conduct. Knowing these rules and how they apply will help an attorney understand numerous ethical problems ranging from conflicts of interest to handling of client funds. But your studies should also include recent professional conduct decisions issued by your state bar. These recent decisions interpret the professional code of your state bar and are essential to your practice.
Conflict of Interest
You cannot represent two clients who are locking horns in the courtroom.
Legal ethics dictate that attorneys avoid conflicts of interest between clients. This can be challenging because an attorney in private practice is expected to bring in money to the firm. So before you take a new client you need to determine if that potential client has an interest that goes against a current client. It would be wise to take a seminar on client screening to ensure that you do not represent two parties who are currently dueling in the courtroom, or two parties who have a history of grievances against each other.
While some conflicts are clear, the complex nature of corporate entities can make discovering and handling a conflict challenging. A potential corporate client may want to sue an affiliate of a corporation you currently represent on a completely different matter. In most cases, an attorney who wants to take up the new client will have to get the current client to waive objection to the representation.
Robert J. Malionek, a securities litigation attorney and partner with Latham & Watkins in New York, N.Y., advises attorneys to step lightly on conflict of interest ground. "When considering conflicts, be mindful of the client relations issues alongside the strict ethical rules," he said.
Legitimate Lawsuits
Study cases involving frivolous lawsuits.
More cases mean more money. But some cases are frivolous, and therefore not worth taking. ABA Model Rule 3.1 directs attorneys to take cases for which there is "a basis in law and in fact." You should study cases and state bar decisions involving frivolous lawsuits. In practice one simple check for a legitimate case is to run through the elements of a cause of action. If one or more of the elements is not there, you cannot win. Attempt an end-around on the court and you can be slapped with a Rule 11 sanction.
Confidentiality
A study of legal ethics teaches an attorney to maintain confidentiality.
Respecting client confidentiality is one of the fundamental rules of legal ethics. What makes this aspect challenging is that the professional rules may conflict with our personal values. A homespun sense of ethics tells us to trust the family or friends of a client. But even when someone else is paying the legal bills, your client is the one you have agreed to represent. If your client tells you not to tell someone else (a parent, for instance) what he said in a consultation, you have to keep it confidential.
Joining a New State Bar
When you join a new state bar you need to study the professional code.
While most states follow the ABA Model Rules, some have their own codes that are significantly different. If you have recently become licensed in a new state you need to study that state's professional code. These differences are especially consequential in the area of disclosing information about your client. One state may give you the option of disclosing information in a situation in which your client is planning to harm another party. In another state you may be required to disclose this information. Knowing these provisions will help lawyers steer clear of violating the rules of professional conduct.

The slope is the slant of a line graphed in a coordinate plane. Two points that lie on the graph within the coordinate plane are needed to calculate the slope. A formula using the values of the x and y coordinates are utilized to determine the slope of a line. The slope is denoted as m, the first x value is denoted as x(1)-one is usually written as a subscript, the second x value is denoted as x(2)-two is usually written as a subscript, the first y value is denoted as y(1)-one is usually written as a subscript, and the second y value is denoted as y(2)-two is usually written as a subscript. The slope is sometimes referred to as the change in y divided by the change in x, and its formula is written as y(2)-y(1)/x(2)-x(1). It is important to note that it does not matter whether y(1) is subtracted from y(2) or visa versa. The same is true for the x values.

1. Find two points on the graph. We will use the coordinates (1, 2) and (4, 3) as our example.
2. Write the slope formula: m=y(2)-y(1)/x(2)-x(1)
3. Label the values of the two points in reference to the slope formula. Continuing with our example, we see from step one that x(1)=1, x(2)=4, y(1)=2, and y(2)=3.
4. Fill in the x and y values in the slope formula. Using the same example, the filled in formula would look like this: 3-2/4-1 because x(1)=1, x(2)=4, y(1)=2, and y(2)=3.
5. Work out the math by subtracting the values of y, then the values of x. The answer to our example would be 1/3. So, the slope is 1/3 in our example.

Instructions
1. Memorize multiplication tables. This is an essential first step for everyone. If you've forgotten the multiplication tables you memorized in school, learn them again.
2. Learn chisenbop. This is a Korean method of adding and subtracting quickly using your fingers. Many who practice chisenbop eventually learn do the calculations by just visualizing the finger movements and never actually "getting out their fingers."
3. Learn the Trachtenberg system. Trachtenberg was a Russian who was imprisoned in a concentration camp. He kept his mind busy by learning fast ways to do math in his head; when he was released he started teaching his system of math.
4. Learn the concepts. Many bright students who have difficulty with math are trying to simply memorize, just as they do with most other subjects in school. Math, however, must actually be learned and understood.
5. Ask what the real world applications are. What are derivatives for? Why is trigonometry needed? People who claim they don't understand algebra nevertheless use it to figure out what the best buys are in the grocery store. Don't wait for the word problems to try to understand what the equations mean.
6. Learn some math history. It may seem like dry reading, but the history of math and of mathematicians can be fascinating. Start with the history of the number zero or Newton's battle with Leibniz over who invented calculus.
7. Read books about mental math. Arthur Benjamin, who performs calculations for sellout crowds in Las Vegas, has written some excellent books.

With objective test questions, there is only one correct answer. True-false and multiple choice items are popular formats for objective questions. Objective tests are popular in economics courses, especially in the introductory principles classes, such as principles of microeconomics and principles of macroeconomics. Objective questions in economics may seem easy to design, but require solid economics knowledge, as well as an understanding of write good test questions.
Question Components
Objective questions in economics or in any subject consist of four parts: the stem, or the text of the question itself; the options the set of answer choices (two in the case of a true-false question, or three to five with a multiple choice question); the key, or the correct option; and the distracters, the incorrect options.
Before writing an economics test, it is important to consider the question format. Many examiners and instructors recommend multiple choice questions, with four or five answer choices. With the true-false format, a student has a 50-percent probability of choosing a correct answer, making it possible to get at least some questions correct through blind guesses.
Economic Terms and Concepts
Most objective economics questions focus on key terms and concepts in the discipline. The following question illustrates this:
"In a free market economy, production and allocation decisions are made by: a) the government; b) voters; c) the private sector; d) consumers." The correct answer in this example is c, the private sector. Questions such as this help to gauge student knowledge of basic economic concepts, which will inform their understanding of more advanced principles.
Tools of Analysis
Other objective questions can test students' understanding of some of the basic tools of economic analysis. For example, a question could measure a students' understanding of supply and demand curves, which they will see on many economic diagrams. One such question might be the following:
"A supply curve can shift because of changes in: a) prices of inputs; b) increased demand; c) government regulation; d) all of the above." The correct answer here is d. This question tests students' knowledge of one of the basic characteristics of supply curves.
Cautionary Notes
When writing objective questions for economics tests, it is important to write the questions in clear, straightforward language that is free of extraneous material. To use an earlier example, the question "In a free market economy, such as that advocated by Adam Smith in The Wealth of Nations, production and allocation decisions are made by..." contains unnecessary information because of the phrase about Adam Smith.
Other important considerations when designing questions include ensuring that there is only one correct answer for each question and that distracters are plausible.

A circuit breaker is a tool that cuts off an electrical circuit when the system is operating normally or when special conditions are occurring. The various types of circuit breakers are vacuum, solid state, air blast, direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC).
Vacuum Breakers
The vacuum breaker uses quick electric revitalization and a high usage of vacuum. Locomotion is spread throughout the bellows at a rapid pace. When the links are separated, an arc is created to support the boiled vapor. Then, the vapor particles enlarge into the vacuum and condensate onto the surfaces. Naturally these particles will disappear, and the arc will be destroyed.
Solid-State Breakers
This type of breaker has a device that stops the flow of the current, but does not stop the flow when going through the third electrode. At the natural state, conduction stops when the flow ends. Solid-state breakers do not require a mechanism. Oftentimes, solid-state breakers can build a current that can maintain a high stable flow.
Air-Blast Circuit Breakers
In air-blast circuit breakers, air is packed in to an extremely high pressure. When the bust valve is unlocked to discharge the pressure, the energy disperses to create an enormous amount of energy. In hydrogen blast circuit breakers, the same standard is employed, with hydrogen being used instead of air. In the hydrogen blast circuit breaker, hydrogen is compressed and makes it flow for a long period of time until the hydrogen diffuses.
Direct-Current Breakers
In direct-current breakers, the lack of a natural state gives it the ability to convert an accelerating voltage to one that is higher than the system voltage, thus stopping the current. To make this happen, the breaker needs to be able to remove energy from the circuit at a rapid rate.
Alternating-Current Breakers
In alternating-current breakers, arcs become extinguished when in a normal state. However, when the voltage is put across, the contacts decrease polarity. In a short period of time, the power becomes the same to the current and voltage. There is a chance to eliminate voltage from the circuit, thus giving it more time to cool and stabilize.
The elasticity of demand is an economic measurement used to calculate the ratio between percentage change in quantity demanded and the percentage change in price. Elasticities determine how much or how little the amount of a good that is sold is dependent on price. Demand is inelastic if price increases have a minimal effect on the amount of goods purchased. If demand is elastic, an increase in price will severely decrease the number of sales.

1. Determine the quantity of goods that were sold at the original price. For example, if the price of a hamburger increased from $1.50 to $1.70, check the records to find out how many hamburgers were sold when the price was $1.50. For this example, we'll say that 200 burgers were sold.
2. Determine the quantity of goods that were sold at the increased price. Continuing the example, check the records to determine how many hamburgers were sold at $1.70. For this example, we'll say that 180 burgers were sold.
3. Plug the values for initial price (Po), new price (Pn), initial quantity (Qo) and new quantity (Qn) into the following equation: Elasticity = (Qn - Qo) / ( (Qn + Qo) / 2) ) / (Pn - Po) / ( (Pn + Po) / 2) ). Take the absolute value of the value you get.
In this example, using 200 for Qo, 180 for Qn, 1.50 for Po, and 1.70 for Pn, you get -.84, whose absolute value is .84. Because this number is less than one, it means that the percentage change in the quantity is less than the percentage change in the price, making demand inelastic.

Article 2 in a series of stand-alone articles on basic probability. A common topic in introductory probability is solving problems involving die rolls. This article shows you the steps for solving the most common types of questions on this subject.
Instructions
1. For all problems of this type, there are some important points that apply, which are expanded upon in the article linked in the Reference section. First of all, the problem will probably refer to a "fair" die. This just means that no tricks are involved. It's not weighted.
We also assume a normal situation. Don't question whether or not the die could come to rest on a corner or up against the wall, or anything like that. It will land on one of the six sides fairly. The problems typically refer to a standard six-sided die, unless you are told otherwise. Note that some textbooks may refer to a die as a "standard number cube," so that the publisher will not be accused of promoting gambling among children.
2. Here is a typical question: "A fair die lands on 1 five times in a row. What are the chances that it will land on 1 on the next roll?" The answer to the question is 1/6. That is it. Any other answer is wrong. Each roll of a die is totally independent. See the article in the Resource section for expanded information on that important concept.
3. Another typical question is, "What are the chances that a fair die will land on 7?" The answer is 0%. Since there is no 7 on a standard die, the outcome cannot occur. Similarly, if you are asked what are the chances that the die will land on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, the answer is 100%. There are 6 possible ways for success out of 6 ways total. From that standpoint, we could write our answer as 6/6, which simplifies to 1.
4. Note that all probabilities are a number between 0 and 1, which we often convert to a percent by converting the fraction to a decimal, and then moving the decimal two places to the right. For example, 0 becomes 0%, 1/2 becomes 50%, 1/6 becomes 16.67% (rounded), and 1 becomes 100%.
5. Another possible question is: "What are the chances that a die will land on 2 or 3 when rolled?" We are dealing with an "or" condition, which means we must add the possible outcomes together (since either is OK). In this case there are two possible means of success, out of 6 total. Our answer is 2/6. Interestingly, in probability we would usually leave the answer just like that, rather than reduce it to 1/3 which would de-emphasize the denominator of 6 total possible outcomes.
6. Another possible question is: "A fair standard number cube is rolled twice. What are the chances that it will land on 2 the first time, and an odd number the second time?" In this case we have an "and" condition, separating two independent events. Each die roll knows nothing of the other. We use multiplication for this. For the first roll, the chances of success are 1/6. For the second roll it is 3/6, since there are three odd values on a die (1, 3, 5). Multiply 1/6 times 3/6 to get 3/36. In this case, we would probably reduce our answer to 1/12.
7. The final type of question discussed is: "A fair die is to be rolled 10 times. What are the chances that it will land on 3 every time? Express your answer using an exponent." The chances of a 3 on each roll is 1/6. We're dealing an "and" condition. Each roll has to be a 3. We must compute 1/6 times 1/6 times 1/6, repeated a total of 10 times. The simplest way of representing this is shown at left. It is (1/6) raised to the 10th power. The exponent is applied to both the numerator and the denominator. Since 1 to the power of 10 is just 1, we could also just write our answer as 1 divided by (6 to the 10th power).
8. It is interesting to note that the actual odds of the above happening are about one in a 60 million. While it is unlikely that any one particular person will experience this, if you were to ask every single American to conduct this experiment honestly and accurately, there is a good chance that a few people would report success.
9. Students should make sure that they are comfortable working with the basic probability concepts discussed in this article since they come up quite frequently.

1. Ask the scholarship candidate to provide an outline for the letter of recommendation. This will act as a starting point for the collection of information required to write the letter. 7. Write the closing paragraph. Provide your contact information and invite the application reviewer to contact you if she has additional questions regarding the applicant's qualifications. Close the letter using a formal business closing line such as, "Sincerely yours," followed by your name.
8. Format the letter of recommendation. Place the recipient's address at the top of the page. Address the recipient by name, if you know it. For example, the letter might begin with, "Dear Mr. Burns."
