Ace A College Interview

A college interview can be a nerve wracking experience for a perspective student. Many students do not know what to expect and worry about the questions that the interviewer will ask them. With a little preparation, you will have no problem acing that college interview.


Instructions








1. Read about the college. Check out their course offerings and any other information that will help you answer questions about the college during the interview.


2. Prepare your answers ahead of time. Consider the questions that the interviewer may ask and decide on your answers. Generally, a college interviewer will ask questions like: Why do you want to attend this university? What are your future plans? What are your strengths and weaknesses?








3. Write down all of your answers and try to memorize them. Ask a friend of family member to do a mock interview with you beforehand. Make your answers sound natural.


4. Wake up early on the day of the interview. Give yourself plenty of time to get dressed and travel to the university. You don't want to go into the interview stressed.


5. Dress appropriately. Wear clothes that you would wear to a job interview. Slacks, skirts, nice shirts and dress shoes are all options you can choose from.


6. Ask questions. An interviewer wants to see a student that is engaged and wants to know more about the college.

1. Research the colleges and universities that offer online degree programs. Look at the course requirements as well as tuition costs.

3. Apply for admission. Once you are accepted, you can plan out how you are going to handle your course load. If you work during the day, you should plan on leaving your evenings free to concentrate on your schoolwork.


4. Take courses continuously. It is important that you do not take too long of a break between your online courses. Stopping for a long period of time will cause a delay in getting your degree.

American Chemical Society Scholarships

Chemical engineering majors can use scholarship money to help pay for college.


If you're interested in pursuing a career in chemistry or chemical engineering, your first step towards success is a college degree. With the costs of a college education steadily increasing, more and more students are turning to scholarship funding to help reduce the expense. The American Chemical Society (ACS) offers four scholarship programs to help students who dream of pursuing a career in chemistry.


ACS Scholars Program








The ACS Scholars Program is a scholarship award designed specifically for students from African American, Hispanic or American Indian backgrounds. The program is open to outstanding high school seniors or college freshman, sophomores and juniors majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering or a related chemistry field. All applicants must be U.S. citizens and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. In addition to academic achievement, leadership ability, career goals, extracurricular activities, volunteer service and financial need are also included in the selection criteria. As of 2011, the program provides multiple awards of up to $5,000 to qualifying students. Awards are renewable for up to four years of study, depending on the recipient's satisfactory academic progress.


Project SEED Scholarships


The ACS Project SEED Program is a special summer research internship reserved for outstanding high school students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The program enables students entering their junior or senior year to work alongside professional scientists in academic, industrial and governmental research laboratories. Students who participate in the SEED internship are also eligible to apply for a Project SEED Scholarship. The program is limited only to those students who plan to pursue a career in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, materials science or a related field. Students are selected based on academic merit, successful completion of the Project SEED internship, career goals and financial need. As of 2011, recipients are eligible to receive a one-time award of up to $5,000.


ACS-Hach Land Grant Undergraduate Scholarships


Undergraduate chemistry majors who have an interest in becoming chemistry teachers may apply for the ACS-Hach Land Grant Undergraduate Scholarship. This program provides approximately 200 scholarships each year to chemistry majors enrolled full time at one of 72 ACS partner colleges and universities. All applicants must be U.S. citizens with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Students are selected based on their aptitude for chemistry, their career interest in becoming a high school chemistry teacher and financial need. As of 2011, selected students may receive up to $6,000 per year for up to six years of study, pending satisfactory academic progress. Recipients are chosen by the partner universities, rather than ACS.


ACS-Hach Second Career Chemistry Teacher Scholarship








The ACS-Hach Second Career Chemistry Teacher Scholarship is designed to encourage working professionals in the chemistry field to pursue a graduate degree in education. To qualify, you must have already completed a bachelor's degree or higher in chemistry or a related field. Applicants must have formal work experience in a chemistry-related field and be accepted or enrolled in an education master's or chemistry teacher certification program. Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents may apply. As of 2011, students enrolled on a part-time basis are eligible to receive up to $3,000 per year. Full-time students are eligible to receive up to $6,000 per year. Awards are renewable for up to three years of study.

Do A Lemon Science Experiments

During the summer or even after school you can do simple science experiments using lemons with kids ages 7 to 12. Lemons are inexpensive and readily available to use in supermarkets and food stores. The two experiments featured here are invisible ink and blowing up a balloon. When performing the experiments, supervise your kids, and have all supplies ready before you begin. The experiments are relatively easy and safe to perform.








Instructions








1. Learn to write a secret message using lemon juice. Collect the following items: 1/2 lemon, small plastic bowl, cutting board, knife, spoon, cotton swab, 8 1/2 by 11 white paper, lamp with bulb. On the cutting board cut the lemon in half with a knife. Squeeze the lemon juice into the plastic bowl. Remove any seeds with plastic spoon. Discard the seeds in the trash. Add a few drops of water to the lemon juices, and mix well.


2. Dip the cotton swab in the lemon mixture and write a message on the white paper. Let the lemon juice dry. It will be invisible. To read the message, hold the white paper over a lamp. Remove the lampshade of the lamp and turn on the lamp. Take the paper and put it near the lightbulb, but do not let it touch. The heat from the lightbulb will make the message appear. After you finish, turn off the lamp and put the shade back on it. Clean up the area.


3. Understand what just happened. Lemon juice contains compounds of carbon dioxide that is colorless when dissolved in water. When heated, they produce carbon, which is black. That is why you can read the invisible message. Be careful not to burn the paper when passing it near the lightbulb. Practice safety when performing these experiments.


4. Gather a balloon, a measuring cup for an ounce of water, an empty plastic soda bottle, 1 tsp. baking soda, a plastic drinking straw, one lemon for juice and measuring spoon, cutting board and sharp knife. Cut the lemon with the knife on the cutting board on a flat surface like the counter or table. Squeeze juice into a plastic cup and remove the seeds with the spoon. Discard the seeds in the trash. Stretch the balloon over the bottle to make sure it fits. Then remove the balloon.


5. Pour the water into the clean, empty soda bottle. Add the baking soda and stir with straw. Add the lemon juice quickly, then put the balloon over the top of bottle. The balloon will inflate because the baking soda and lemon acid create carbon dioxide. Be sure to clean up after the experiment.

In the 15th century, Gutenberg invented the first printing press. What we'd think of today as a crude, simple invention sparked a revolution across first Europe, and then the world. The implications of being able to distribute the printed word, something we take for granted, had far-reaching and very long-lasting effects on the world.








Before the Printing Press


In Europe, books had to be written by hand. Given the amount of work and knowledge this required, books were usually only owned by the rich, or by large organizations such as the church.


Limiting Information


The biggest objections to the printing press came from the organizations in power. The scarcity of books and learning meant that these organizations controlled the flow of information, and held positions of power that would be threatened by the spread of knowledge.


The Immediate Effects


Once the printing press went into more common use, it meant that the rarity of books dropped off sharply. Not only did books become more common, and a mass produced industry, but their sale stimulated colleges, writers and created more markets for paper and binding that there had been previously.


Spreading Ripples


After the immediate spread of information, industry and technology, came the spread of ideas. The Renaissance could never have occurred without being able to print ideas and spread them in the form of papers, books and pamphlets.


Today

Document That Your Student Loan Is Deferred

If you're applying for an auto loan or other credit, you may need documentation to prove that your student loan obligation is deferred. Typically, a deferment allows a student to delay student loan payments while enrolled in school. Generally, those attending college full-time or taking six or more credit hours a semester may apply for a loan deferment.


Instructions


1. Contact your school's registrar. Inquire about the status of your student loan deferment. Ask the representative to fax or mail proof of your loan deferment status. If the school outsources certain functions, obtain the name and phone number of the entity that services your student loan.


2. Contact the servicer of your student loan if deferment records are not maintained at your school. Contact the National Student Clearinghouse (see Resources) to obtain written proof of your loan deferment; many colleges and universities use the organization to manage student records and data.


3. Send a copy of your document to each of the major credit reporting bureaus. Use information in the Resources section to supply Experian, TransUnion and Equifax with a copy of your loan deferment letter. Ask each bureau to update your credit report to reflect a deferred status for your student loan. Check your credit report after 60 days at Annualcreditreport.com to ensure that your student loan displays a deferred status.

Preschool teachers are in charge of the education of children typically between the ages of 3 and 5. Average Salary


In 2008, the median salary earned by preschool teachers was $23,870, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The lowest 10 percent of salaried preschool teachers earned less than $16,030, while the highest 10 percent earned greater than $41,660. Hourly pay rates for preschool teachers average from $9.64 to $13.50, with overtime paying from $12.73 to $18.75 per hour.

Preschool teachers make less than those in many other educational careers. Median salary levels for teachers in kindergarten through high school range from $47,100 to $51,180. Opening a preschool is more complicated than starting a traditional school. You must comply with the laws governing preschools and deal with issues that don't often arise with older students. Here's some tips to help you with the process.

Learn To Spell Place Names

Start with simple names then work up to names like Saskatchewan


Unfortunately, there is no magic formula that is going to ensure you spell things like Saskatchewan correctly. Fortunately, with a little imagination and some memory games, you can learn to spell place names without even breaking a sweat. Here’s how.


Instructions


1. Write the name boldly on a piece of paper several times, stare at it, then close your eyes and visualize the name in your head.


2. Repeat the name aloud, phonetically, until you pronounce it exactly as it’s spelled. When I moved to southern Arizona, you better believe I was repeating my new hometown of TUCK-son to remember spell Tucson.


3. Come up with a cute little memory device to help you remember the spelling. For instance, Tucson is cozy, so you can TUCK yourself in. In Saskatchewan, people must be SASsy and have have coffee KlATCHes because it’s cold, Ew, it’s so cold your skin gets WAN.


4. Learn the name’s origin. Looking up Saskatchewan’s origin doesn’t help much, but translated place names will if you are familiar with the language of origin. No one I know who studied French has a problem with Baton Rouge, Louisiana or Creve Coeur, Illinois.


5. Draw the name in bubble letters or write a song or poem that includes spell the name. One of the reasons I wrote the poem “The Mighty Verrazano Bridge,” about the second-coolest bridge in Brooklyn, was so I could include the line: “with two Rs and one Z.”


6. Practice. Keep writing the name over and over until you get so sick of it you will never forget how it’s spelled. Even if it’s Saskatchewan.

Pay For Physical Therapy Graduate School







Attending graduate school to become a physical therapist requires a serious financial commitment. The University of Nevada in Las Vegas estimates that Nevada students spend approximately $30,000 to $40,000 on tuition, fees and books obtaining their degree in physical therapy, and this cost is even higher for out-of-state students, who pay an additional $10,000. To ensure that money doesn't prevent you from earning your degree, it's important to learn pay for physical therapy graduate school.


Instructions


1. Apply for scholarships. Some foundations and organizations, such as the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, provide scholarships for graduate students studying to be physical therapists. Other scholarships are available from the school a student plans to attend. For example, Georgia State University offers the Gordon Seagraves Cummings Scholarship and the Virgil Jacobs Scholarship solely to students in their physical therapy program.


2. Find grant money. Graduate students don't qualify for federal financial aid grants, such as the Pell Grant, to pay for physical therapy school. However other grant opportunities exist through state governments and private foundations. For example, the state of Maryland offers Workforce Shortage grants to help with the shortage of physical therapists in the state. A student can receive $2,000 per year for three years, as long as he commits to working in the state as a physical therapist for a period of time after he graduates.


3. Apply for graduate assistantships. Students earn tuition waivers and a stipend if they qualify for a graduate teaching or research assistantship. To earn an assistantship, a student submits an application and references to the department where she wants to work. Physical therapy students apply to their own department or a related field such as kinesiology or science, since many graduate students have the qualifications to teach lab sections of human anatomy and physiology.








4. Look for fellowships. The American Physical Therapy Association lists on their website a variety of different fellowships exclusive to the physical therapy field. Some of these fellowships are only available at a specific school while others can be used anywhere. Getting a fellowship provides a student with the money to pay for physical therapy graduate school tuition as well as to conduct research in the physical therapy field under the guidance of a professor.


5. Borrow money through student loans. Taking out a student loan isn't an ideal way to pay for physical therapy graduate school, but it is an option for students unable to qualify for other funding opportunities. The Federal Perkins Loan offers a low interest rate for students who qualify for it based on financial need. The maximum amount for students to borrow through this loan program is $8,000. Stafford loans are also available to graduate physical therapy students, with each person allowed to borrow up to the maximum of $20,500 per year. However, only $8,500 of the Stafford loan can be subsidized, allowing the government to pay the interest on the loan while a student is in school.

Music College Requirements

Music college requirements must be met before a student's application will be accepted.


Eligibility for music college depends on the college an individual is attempting to attend. Juilliard has different requirements from Texas State, though there are some similarities. Once the minimum eligibility requirements for application are met, other requirements are necessary before being accepted into a music college.


Secondary Education


Candidate seeking acceptance into a music college must complete a secondary education such as high school along with providing a copy of the transcripts. Some music colleges require a only general education diploma (GED), but the top music colleges, such as Juilliard, require a high school diploma. Juilliard does make exceptions to individually gifted prospective students who are not old enough to have completed a secondary education. These individuals will be required to complete their secondary education while attending Juilliard.


Music Proficiency


Texas State requires that an individual seeking acceptance into the music college be examined on music proficiency before being eligible. This music proficiency examination is a prerequisite to teacher certification and shows that the prospective student is knowledgeable in music. Proficiency examinations are different for each music college, and a prospective student must check with the desired music college to find out the examination dates and requirements.


Grade Requirements


Most music colleges require a prospective student to maintain a certain grade average before being eligible to attend. Texas State requires at least an average grade of "C," while other music colleges, such as Juilliard, require a student to pass the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) with a minimum score before being eligible.


Essay


Music colleges that primarily teach music, drama and the arts require a prospective student to submit an essay before being eligible to attend. Juilliard, for example, has different topics on which the essay is to written. This essay provides the admissions office with a better understanding of the prospective student.


Audition


No music college allows a prospective student to attend without first auditioning for the school. The audition takes place only after the other requirements are met and approved by the admission board. Both Texas State and Juilliard set dates for auditions and limit the number of auditions an individual can perform before being ineligible to attend the music college. The audition is on the instrument of choice, voice or dramatic acting.

Write A Cv For A Residency

A curriculum vitae (CV for short) is a document written for potential employers covering pertinent information like name, educational background and work experience. A CV goes more in-depth than a resume by listing items such as research and presentation experience, published studies and accolades and hobbies.


Instructions


1. Display your name, address, phone number and email address. Give each item a new line. Then, write a small summary of your work experience thus far noting you are focused on advancing into your residency with vigor.


2. List all employment history. Take care to highlight the positions that qualify you all the more for a residency. Perhaps you have done several internships in preparation for the residency. Relay any professional qualifications that you have as well.


3. Write down your educational achievements, beginning with college. Give the time frame and the degree you earned. Include any other schooling that demonstrates your affinity for medicine. Maybe you won a fellowship to study medicine abroad for a year while in college. Include that here.


4. Mention any memberships or affiliations that could portray you in a positive light such as Future Pediatricians of America, or the local Rotary club in the town where you wish to do your residency.


5. Detail any published works or articles. Give the name of the journal and the date when it was published. Delve into the subject matter of the piece if appropriate. Chances are though that at this point you won't have published anything but there are those on accelerated tracks.


6. List any hobbies as well as useful skills such as you love bird watching and are bilingual. If you have received awards or praise for your work, you can say that as well.

Schools use the statement to evaluate the personality and motivation of prospective students: without a personal statement, the school would have only a dry list of facts to use in evaluating each student. Admissions boards read personal statements carefully, and a personal statement can greatly impact a student's chances of admission.


Instructions


1. Obtain and read the guidelines for writing a personal statement; note that applicants are left with considerable latitude to choose what they write.


2. Think carefully and honestly about why you want to go to medical school: examine your motivations, your history and the process you used to decide to become a physician.


3. Choose a theme for your statement, which may describe a life-changing event, an important relationship, or a specific aspect of the practice of medicine that appeals to you.


4. Write the statement, taking care to avoid remarks that might convey arrogance or offend. Write a complex statement that demonstrates your ability to grasp the complexities of medicine.


5. Ask another person to read, revise, and evaluate the essay honestly. Pick somebody who will tell you the truth.


6. Revise your essay to reflect feedback. Polish it. Leave it untouched for a week, and then return to it and revise it again.

Degrees In Paralegal Studies

Several different degrees are available in paralegal studies and related fields.


Degrees in paralegal studies are available in many forms. One is an associate's degree, traditionally known as a two-year degree. Another is a baccalaureate or bachelor's degree, traditionally known as a four-year degree. Second bachelor's degrees, postdegree paralegal certificates and master's degrees in related fields are also available. The American Bar Association (ABA) Standing Committee on Paralegals has approved all of the featured programs. They are also institutional members of the American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE).


Associate's Degrees


An Associate of Applied Science in paralegal studies is common in community colleges, such as Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland, technical colleges, such as Athens Technical College in Athens, Georgia, and proprietary schools, such as the Center for Advanced Legal Studies in Houston. Tulane University in New Orleans offers an Associate of Arts in paralegal studies. Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan, offers an Associate of Science in paralegal studies. Anne Arundel Community College offers concentrations in litigation, business and general practice.


Bachelor's Degrees








Roosevelt University in Chicago offers both a Bachelor of Professional Studies with a major in paralegal studies and a Bachelor of Arts with a paralegal certificate. The College of Health and Human Services, Department of Undergraduate Legal Specialties, at the University of Toledo in Ohio offers a Bachelor of Science in paralegal studies, as do Madonna University, Stevenson University in Stevenson, Maryland, and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. Stevenson and Eastern Michigan offer an Accelerated Second Bachelor of Science in addition to a traditional Bachelor of Science. Tulane also offers a minor in paralegal studies.


Postdegree Certificates


Anne Arundel Community College, the Center for Advanced Legal Studies, Tulane University, Madonna University, Roosevelt University and the University of Toledo all offer postdegree certificates in paralegal studies. Webster University in St. Louis, Texas State University-San Marcos, Montclair State University in New Jersey and Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia, also offer postdegree certificates. Registered nurses may seek postdegree nurse paralegal certificates from Anne Arundel Community College, Madonna and Toledo.


Master's Degrees








Webster University offers a Master of Arts in Legal Studies, as does Texas State University-San Marcos. Montclair State offers a Master of Arts in law and governance. Marymount offers a Master of Arts in legal administration. All of these universities also offer postdegree paralegal certificates, as noted above, and bachelor's degrees in paralegal studies.

To gain admission to a graduate business school, you must first take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). It is a test to measure your verbal, writing and mathematical skills. The key to getting the best score on your GMAT is to understand how the exam is organized and prepare for the types of questions. The GMAT scoring bracket goes from 200 to 800 points on a cumulative scale and is not broken down by section.








Test Timing


Take the test either while you are in college or shortly after you graduate, since the concepts are still fresh in your memory. You do not have to focus on relearning everything you learned due to the passage of time. Your GMAT scores are good for five years, so even if you do not intend to apply to graduate school right away and instead focus on getting a job, taking the test early still benefits you.


Understand the Computer Adaptive Testing Method


The GMAT is unique from pre-college standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT, in that it asks you average-level questions and bases subsequent questions on how well you did initially. If you get a significant number wrong, the question difficulty decreases, while if you do better, the question difficulty increases. Since the testing method is so different, take your time in answering questions, especially those you are unsure of. You can't skip questions and go back to answer them later on, so focus on the questions as they are presented to you.


Essay Format


The GMAT includes an essay section, called the Analytical Writing Assessment, where you must write out two essays. One is an analysis of an argument and the other is analysis of an issue. The computer grades your essay against a database of hundreds of other essays, using a very strict algorithm. The essay section does not include a spell check feature, so pay close attention to your form. Always back up all arguments in your essay with reasons and supporting evidence, using transitional words and phrases as you go from one idea to another.


Data Sufficiency


Data sufficiency is a style of question that you probably have not seen on any other standardized test. You get a question followed by two statements and must determine whether one statement, both statements together or neither statement answers the question. You do not need to answer the question but instead focus on improving your analytical skills. Use the process of elimination when evaluating statements. Only use information the GMAT presents to you in each question to consider whether you can answer it with the two statements.


Practice Tests








The best way to prepare for the GMAT format is to actually take practice tests and compare your scores with your personal goals. Taking the practice test allows you to evaluate which areas you need to focus on to improve your score and gets you comfortable with the testing format.

There are many programs in the MT field that equate to "Work at Home" scams, offering the moon but putting little effort into the solid training you will need to be successful in MT.


On the other hand, many community colleges, vocational schools, and online universities offer viable MT certificates and degrees. These are the programs that can teach you the basic skills, from grammar and software necessities to medical terms and jargon, that will help you be a success in your chosen field. Do your homework. Make sure your chosen program is well reviewed, has a high placement rate after graduation and is accredited.


MT Specialization








Many transcription training programs, especially full degrees, offer areas of specialization. These can prepare you to manage the jargon inherent in particular medical fields, such as ontology, osteology, audiology, enterology, psychology or family medicine. A medical transcriptionist with specialized experience can often ask for and receive higher rates of pay within their chosen area(s) of specialty.


Finding Employment


Once you have completed your training, you have two options --- working with an established company or starting your own business.








Working full-time with an established company can give you more stability and the possibility of benefits such as health insurance or a 401(k). This could be with a doctor's office, a dentist's office, a hospital or a third-party company that specializes in offering medical transcription services to institutions and businesses that need such services. If working from home is important to you, you'll need to find a company that is amenable to working with a medical transcriptionist who telecommutes.


Your second option as a medical transcriptionist is to start your own business and freelance. This option gives you the flexibility to offer your services to multiple businesses, and can allow you more flexibility to set your own hours. Montgomery Gi Bill Benefits

If you are a veteran who meets certain qualification criteria, you may qualify for the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB). This program provides up to 36 months of education benefits and can be used to pay for college, certification tests, vocational training, and other programs. The Montgomery GI Bill features a buy-up program that enables servicemembers to purchase access to additional benefits.


Benefits


As of October 1, 2009, veterans who are enrolled in full-time schooling receive $1,368 per month on the Montgomery GI Bill. The amount decreases with the number of credits you take, and can be as little as $342 for veterans enrolled for one-quarter time or less. The amount increases depending on the amount of money you invested in the buy-up program. For example, if you invested $600 in the buy-up program, you may receive an additional $150 per month if you are attending school full-time.


Programs


The Montgomery GI Bill covers many different programs. The VA does approve specific schools or programs--this is left to the states--but it does maintain a list of approved programs on its website at http://www.gibill.va.gov/GI_Bill_Info/programs.htm.


As a general rule, you may use the Montgomery GI Bill to pay for college, business, technical or vocational school programs. Benefits can also be used to pay for the cost of licensing tests, certification tests, or national standardized tests. Correspondence courses are eligible. In some cases, flight training, on-the-job training, apprenticeship programs and remedial or refresher training courses may qualify.


Buy-Up


While on active duty, you have the option to participate in a buy-up program to purchase additional benefits. You must make the contributions, which may total up to $600, while you are serving in the military. A $600 contribution can result in an additional $5,400 in benefits.


Transfers & Expiration


Generally, you must use all benefits within 10 years of the your discharge date. The duration may vary, however, so contact the VA for additional information specific to your case.


You may transfer your benefits to dependents only if you served in the Army. The Department of the Army determines who is eligible to transfer benefits and handles all of the paperwork related to the transfer. Only when the transfer is complete does the VA begin releasing payments.


Generally, the Army's standards for transfer are very firm. Spouses and children are the only eligible recipients. You must have served at least six years in the active duty Army to transfer benefits to a spouse or 10 years of active duty to transfer benefits to a child. You must re-enlist for an additional four years.


Eligibility


If you are a separated service member who entered active duty for the first time after June 30, 1985, you may be eligible. You must have received a high school diploma or equivalent or, in some instances, 12 hours of college credit, before the end of your first service term.


Only service members who received honorable discharges are eligible.


You must meet a minimum length of service to qualify. You must have served for three continuous years. If you enlisted for two years, only those two years must have been served. Two years of continuous service are also acceptable if you served an additional four years in the Selected Reserve or entered the Selective Reserve within a year of leaving active duty.


Currently serving members of the United States armed forces may be eligible to begin using benefits after two years of active duty are complete.

Apply for Benefits


Eligible veterans can apply to use their benefits by filling out VA Form 22-1990. You may obtain this form through the mail, online, or from the school you will be attending.


To have the form sent through the mail, call 888-GIBILL-1. The forms can also be obtained, completed and submitted electronically at http://www.gibill.va.gov/GI_Bill_Info/How_to_Apply.htm.


In many cases, your forms will be automatically filled out and submitted by a VA Certifying official at the educational institution. A VA Certifying official should be present in the Registrar's or Financial Aid office.

Council Members' Duties

For many Americans, serving on local city councils or commissions offers the chance to help their community. However, getting elected is the easy part. The real work begins when any newly elected council member takes office and deals with the realities of his role. New members must learn to work with people of different views and backgrounds to solve problems, while learning function as a council. Time management is crucial as well, since assignments to various boards and commissions are part of the job. Since many council members only receive token salaries or per diems, many of them must juggle their committee workloads with the demands of a full-time job. When all these factors are taken into account, the average person's commitment to the job is impressive indeed.


History








During 19th- and early 20th-century America, the role of city councils were not clearly defined. In most municipalities, the real power rested with autocratic mayors and "bosses" such as Boston's James Michael Curley or Chicago's own "Big Bill" Thompson--to name two notorious examples--who operated on a scale of corruption unimaginable by today's standards. Graft and kickbacks became the norm for getting city businesses or jobs. One of the most glaring examples occurred with the construction of the New York County Courthouse, from which the city's public works commissioner, William Marcy Tweed--or "Boss" Tweed, to the public--profited personally from ties to a company that supplied the marble. By the time of its completion, the courthouse project cost soared to $13 million, making it twice as costly as the Alaska Purchase of 1867 (the equivalent of $178 million in today's dollars).








Time Frame


Emboldened by public outcry against the corruption they saw, reformers successfully prodded cities into approving such key reforms as civil service hiring and competitive bidding. However, alternatives to traditional patronage-based government emerged slowly. Among the earliest was the city commission of five or seven elected members, with each one responsible for a key department. The mayor runs the meetings, but is essentially another commissioner, with no extra powers. This arrangement is known as the Galveston Plan, which the Texan city adopted in 1901 to speed up reconstruction after a flood claimed 6,000 lives. After an initial surge, the commission format gradually declined in popularity after World War I, as more municipalities sensed the need for professional administrators to reduce the role of politics in making decisions. This led to the growth of the council-manager form of government, as Galveston itself did, in 1960.


Effects


The most dramatic reforms were well under way by the Depression era in the 1930s, when the council-manager form of government became prevalent. This arrangement effectively divides executive power between the manager, who serves as a city's day-to-day administrator and spokesperson, while the council acts as a policy-making body. The manager also researches specific issues, which are presented for full council action. Council persons may serve on individual subcommittees that make their own recommendations to the full council, which sets the annual budget and tax rates. Personnel issues, such as hiring and hiring of department heads, also fall into the council's authority.


Strong Versus Weak Mayor


Two other forms of municipal government can affect a council person's duties. In many large cities, the strong mayoral form of government prevails. Under this arrangement, the mayor wields much of the meaningful executive power, including the right to hire and fire department heads and the setting of the annual budget--although the council can veto those decisions, if it wishes. Mayor Richard M. Daley of Chicago exemplifies one of the nation's best-known strong mayors. The weak mayoral format, as its title implies, works the opposite way--in which the mayor becomes more of a ceremonial leader and spokesperson rather than an independent political figure in his own right. According to a head count posted on the Junto Society's website, the mayor-council form is the most popular arrangement, with 3,776 municipalities using it in 1984, versus 2,523 for council-manager and 177 for city commission.


Considerations


Although civic-minded forces have worked hard to take politics out of City Hall, this has not eliminated the issue. Many municipalities have passed special ethics rules designed to curb nepotism as well as the exchange of gifts for favors, which looms larger in major cities. New council members are expected to learn those rules, which can prohibit them from voting on an issue in which they may hold a financial or personal stake. Learning the ins and outs of the Open Meetings Act is another big part of the job, since only certain kinds of deliberations--such as litigation, negotiations or property purchases--are eligible for a closed session. Even then, the council must take action when it reconvenes publicly. Failure to grasp these issues can lead to the specter of lawsuits and even criminal charges. If nothing else, the need to consider such issues in an increasingly media-saturated age shows that the average council person's lot has become more complex than ever.

Talbots Women's Scholarship Fund


Talbots Women's Scholarship Fund helps women in the United States and Canada who have a high school diploma or GED go to an accredited two- or four-year college, university or technical college in the United States or Canada. Eligible recipients need to be out of high school at least 10 years at the time of their application and not have a bachelor's degree in any field. If you are already enrolled at an institute of higher education, you need to have at least 24 more credit hours (about two semesters) left before earning your degree to be eligible. Once Talbot receives 5,000 eligible entries, they don't accept anymore applications. Awarded funds include up to 10 scholarships of $15,000 and one $30,000 scholarship. You can only apply once.

AARP Foundation Women's Scholarship Program accepts applications from women over 40 who are U.S. citizens, have moderate to low incomes, and are enrolled in accredited technical schools, community colleges and four-year universities. Graduate students are not eligible for this scholarship. Women can be enrolled as full-time or part-time students. They must be entering school within six months of receiving the award. AARP receives charitable contributions from places such as Walmart and the Women's Leadership Circle Cabinet. The scholarship program favors applicants returning to work after a long absence, underemployed women, and women raising family members' children, including grandparents. The amounts of awards range from $500 to $5,000, depending on your financial need and cost of the program you enter. Award money pays tuition, books and lab fees.

Get Papers Organized For College







Organize paperwork for your college applications.


College applications typically require a long list of items for completion, including the application itself, essays, recommendations and school transcripts. To be successful, stay on top of the paperwork and complete the applications in time to meet the colleges' strict deadlines. Use a planning system that works well for you, whether it's paper or electronic, to keep everything for your college applications organized.


Instructions


1. Make a checklist for each college that you plan to apply to. Include all of the items that you'll need to send in with your application. You may need to send some of these items, such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form, separately. Many colleges include a checklist with the application.


2. Label a file folder for each college. Use it to keep paperwork separate and organized. Start by putting the checklist into the folder. As you accumulate more of the required items, insert those into the folder as well.


3. Create a timetable for each of your college applications. Include the due dates set by the college, as well as the ones that you set yourself. For example, the college has an application deadline, but you may want to submit your application sooner. Break up the application into smaller tasks---writing the essay, requesting recommendations---that each have their own deadlines. Write this information down on a calendar or planner or enter the information into your PDA.


4. Request personal recommendations from teachers or test scores from the school. Inside the college's file folder, record the date you made the request for the item and who was contacted. Enter a follow up date in your planner to check on progress.


5. Arrange the paperwork in each folder. When you have all of the items that you need for each application, go through your folder and arrange the papers in checklist order. For example, the application may come first, followed by your essay, test scores, school transcripts and recommendations.

Distance Learning Courses

Distance learning, also referred to as distance education, serves as an alternative instructional method to the traditional classroom. Any type of coursework that does not require the student to physically meet in person with the instructor can be defined as a distance learning course. With the proliferation of the Internet, distance learning is becoming more and more popular.


History


Many people equate distance learning courses to the age of the computer. However, distance education programs have existed since the early 1700s. Several years later, the advent of the Unites States Postal Office would help proliferate such distance programs. The first educational institution to offer distance learning courses was the University of London (1858). Opened in 1873 and located in Boston, the Society to Encourage Studies at Home was the first U.S. distance learning facility.


Types


There are a variety of ways in which to learn at a distance. All types of distance learning can be categorized as either synchronous or asynchronous. Synchronous distance courses are defined as those in which the teacher and student interact with each other in real time. Examples include telephone, web chat and video conferencing. Asynchronous forms of distance learning allow students and teachers to access course material at their leisure. Examples include email, printed workbooks, web forums, CDs and voice mail.


Considerations


The majority of distance learning courses require students to complete all coursework remotely. This may involve reading textbooks, completing lessons and doing reports. Quizzes and tests are also completed from home. However, the possibility for cheating may require some upper level course tests to be completed in a supervised environment. Other classes may require lab work that requires students to meet (with or without a teacher) infrequently.

Students who wish to pursue their degree at American Global University's College of Mathematical Sciences have three options. They can obtain a master's of arts or master's of sciences in mathematics, or they may immediately begin a PhD program in the field. The M.A. is generally geared towards those who want to become teachers or plan to eventually obtain a PhD. In the M.S. program, students must take at least 18 of their 36 credits at the school. It is optional to write a thesis. Doctoral candidates are required to take a qualifying examination, complete a dissertation and take one sequence of two courses in functional analysis, complex analysis, differential geometry, numerical analysis, matrix algebra, abstract algebra, topology, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations and probability and statistics.

Texas A&M: College of Science


The master's of science program in mathematics at Texas A&M also offers an option to specialize in education. The degree requires 36 credit hours consisting of the following: 12 credits of regular mathematics courses, half of which must be standard graduate mathematics courses, 12 credits in survey of mathematical problems I & II, history of mathematics and mathematical communication and technology and 12 credits in education courses, statistics and other courses of the student's selection. Some courses from other departments will also count towards the online degree; the acceptable courses are numerical analysis, linear algebra and math analysis.

Advantages & Disadvantages Of Classroom Learning







Classroom learning comes with positives and negatives.


The continual evolution of technology enables a growing number of students to rely on the Internet for education instead of the traditional classroom-style learning. While distance learning is an ideal solution for certain types of students, others are better off sticking with the old-fashioned academic format. For those debating whether classroom learning is a good fit or not, consider the various advantages and disadvantages before coming to a conclusion.


Pro: More Interaction








A classroom environment offers students the opportunity to have face-to-face interactions with their peers and instructors. This is an added social benefit as well as an educational aid. Because students see the same peers in class every session, they get a chance to form friendships. In the case of higher learning, pupils can find potential lifelong professional connections. On the educational side, students get a chance to participate in a lecture or class discussion physically. If something is not understood, interrupting to ask for clarification is always an option.


Disadvantage: No Flexibility


A campus-based learning experience means the class schedule is predetermined and not subject to change. Students must shape their personal schedules around school instead of the other way around. If plans unexpectedly change or an emergency comes up, the student cannot adjust the class schedule to turn in the work at a different time. If a scheduling conflict arises between work and school, students are forced to choose between their education and their income.


Pro: Traditional Experience


In some cases, the classroom environment is the only style of education the students know, and the change of pace online classes offer may prove difficult to adjust to. Students get the opportunity for hands-on, structured learning instead of being presented with the course books, written lectures and self-directed activities distance learning provides. Suddenly straying from the standard learning experience may add unexpected strain academically, making the class material more difficult in the process.


Disadvantage: Travel Considerations


With classroom learning, students must physically attend the courses to get credit for attendance. Those who must travel long distances to get to school must allot enough time to arrive punctually, particularly in instances where inclement weather is involved. A long commute may also mean a hefty gas bill over a long period of time which, when combined with the cost of education, may present an issue to financially challenged students.

Scholarships For Disabled Veterans







There are several scholarship programs that are available to veterans who have been wounded in the line of duty and are disabled as a result of their sacrifice. Scholarships for disabled veterans are sometimes offered by organizations dedicated to serving the military. Some individual colleges and universities also offer institutional scholarships to disabled veterans attending specific schools.


AFCEA Disabled War Veterans Scholarship


The AFCEA Disabled War Veterans Scholarship is available to veterans of the military and national guard who have been disabled as a result of injuries suffered in the line of duty. Only veterans disabled in post-9/11 conflicts are eligible to receive this scholarship. Applicants must be undergraduates, however, the scholarships are available for both two-year and four-year institutions. Eligible applicants must be studying in a field related to science, technology or engineering.








Sentinels of Freedom


The organization Sentinels of Freedom offers comprehensive support to disabled veterans, including educational assistance. This program is only available to veterans who were injured in the line of duty after September 11, 2001. Injuries that may make an applicant eligible to receive support through the Sentinels of Freedom program include severe burns, blindness, amputation, deafness and post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition to providing tuition assistance, the Sentinels of Freedom program may also provide a recipient with adaptive housing and transportation, as well as personal mentoring.


American Sentinel University Severely Injured Scholarship Program


Depending on the nature of a veteran's disability, the ability to pursue a degree online can be a welcome opportunity. American Sentinel University recognizes this and offers tuition assistance to disabled veterans through the Severely Injured Scholarship Program. This program pays for 50 percent of an eligible student's tuition. To be eligible, an applicant must submit documentation of her disability along with documentation of income, high school and college transcripts and a 300-word essay that describes how receiving this scholarship would be beneficial. Scholarships are awarded in June, August and October.


School-Specifc Scholarships


Many institutions of higher learning extend scholarship programs specifically to veterans who have received an injury resulting in disability. For example, Texas A&M University offers the Honored Service Scholarship in the amount of $3,000, with 25 Honored Service Scholarships awarded annually. UCLA offers the Bill Tainter Scholarship to disabled veterans who have a grade point average of at least 2.0 on a scale of 4.0. Many other colleges offer scholarships to disabled veterans. How Long Do You Have To Go To School For Criminal Justice

Criminal justice careers require different levels of education.


Criminal justice involves investigations, evidence collection, arrests, court proceedings and post-conviction issues. Careers in criminal justice require various levels of education, from a high school diploma to a graduate degree.


Police Officer


Most police officer positions require some college classes. A bachelor's degree is a requirement for federal police officer positions. Many community colleges offer two-year courses of study designed to fulfill the educational requirements for a state police officer position.


FBI Agent


FBI agents must have a bachelor's degree and three years of work experience or a graduate degree and two years of work experience. Agents must also meet additional criteria--such as fluency in a foreign language or a college major in electrical engineering, computer science or accounting--prior to undergoing 18 months of academy training.


Paralegal


Paralegal positions require an associate degree in paralegal studies or a bachelor's degree in another field plus completion of a paralegal certification program. Some lawyers will train paralegals that only have a high school diploma.


Lawyer


Lawyers attend school for at least seven years: undergraduate for four and law school for three. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 46 states and jurisdictions now mandate that lawyers participate in continuing legal education after graduation.


Corrections Officer


Federal corrections officers require a bachelor's degree. Many state corrections officer jobs require only a high school diploma or a GED, followed by academy and on-the-job training.

Educational Grants for Single Parents


Single parents face many challenges when it comes to raising their children. Many of these challenges come from not being able to financially provide for their children as much as they would like to. However, getting a degree can increase their job prospects and increase the amount of money they can earn to support their children. Single parents should thus be aware of the various education grants that are available.


The TEACH Grant


This grant stands for the Teacher Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant. This program is for single parents who want to become a teacher at a public or a private elementary school that includes children from low-income families. If the single parent is given this grant, she can receive up to $4,000 per year.


The Federal Pell Grant


This grant is considered to be associated with federal financial aid. However, unlike a loan, the Federal Pell Grant does not have to be repaid by those who qualify for it. This grant is only usually given to those who are undergraduate students still working toward obtaining their degree. The maximum amount that can be received through this grant is about $4,500 for an award year. However, the amount varies in accordance with actual student status (full-time or part-time), financial need and school costs.


The FSEOG Grant


The FSEOG grant stands for the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. Those single parents who have already qualified for a Pell Grant might also qualify for the FSOG. However, like the Pell Grant, this grant does not need to be repaid. This grant is specifically for those undergraduate students who find themselves in significant need of financial assistance. Depending on the amount of financial need, students receive a yearly amount from $100 to about $4,000.








The Academic Competitiveness Grant


If a student has already obtained at Pell Grant award, he is also eligible for the Academic Competitiveness Grant. First-year college students must have become a high school graduate after Jan. 1, 2006. Second-year college students must have gotten their high school diploma after Jan. 1, 2005. The amount this grant gives ranges from about $750 to $1,300 annually. Students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in order to keep this grant.


Institutional Grants


Single parents might be eligible for additional grants that are given out directly through the college at which they want to study. Some grants are given based solely on financial need, others are based on academic promise, and others are based on a mix of the two. No matter what, the single parent should apply for as many grants as possible in order to change his academic and financial future for the better.
