Professional organizations provide scholarships for psychology graduate students.

Graduate psychology students can find scholarship programs offered by private foundations and professional organizations. Scholarships typically have a specific intent for the use of funds, such as research expenses for a doctoral dissertation or master's thesis, travel expenses associated with attending conventions and conferences or general educational expenses. Ungerleider/Zimbardo Travel Scholarships

The American Psychological Association (APA) awards the annual Ungerleider/Zimbardo Travel Scholarship. The association offers seven scholarships for graduate students presenting research at the yearly APA convention. Each scholarship pays up to $300. The program only accepts applicants who are enrolled full-time in a psychology graduate program in Canada or the United States. All applicants must hold associate member or student affiliate status with the APA or must submit a membership application with their travel award application.

APF/COGDOP Graduate Research Scholarships

The Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology (COGDOP) and the American Psychological Foundation (APF) sponsor 13 annual research scholarships for graduate students. Awards range from $1,000 to $5,000, which graduate students can use to offset costs related to research for their doctoral dissertation or master's thesis. The program bases awards on the subject matter and importance of a student's research and the proposed use of scholarship funds. Letters of recommendation, previous publications and an applicant's background can also play a role in the selection process. Psychology students enrolled in doctoral programs or interim master's degree programs can apply. Students enrolled in terminal master's degree programs can apply only if they intend to pursue a Ph.D. program. Psychology graduate programs at educational institutions holding membership with the COGDOP can nominate students for the scholarship. The program places a limit on nominations submitted by psychology programs based on enrollment levels.

Benton-Meier Neuropsychology Scholarship

The APF sponsors the Benton-Meier Neuropsychology Scholarship, which provides funding for research conducted by neuropsychology students enrolled in graduate programs. The program awards scholarships up to $2,500 to students who have completed their doctoral candidacy. When using human participants in research studies, APF requires applicants to receive approval from the institutional review board of their school before receiving funds.

National Board for Certified Counselors

The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) awards five rural scholarships annually. The program supports students enrolled in graduate programs at Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Program (CACREP) accredited schools. Rural scholarship eligibility is open to students who enroll in a minimum of six credits during their current school semester and have completed a minimum of 18 hours of credits. Applicants must reside in a rural area or in a community with a shortage of mental health professionals. Recipients must commit to serve as a counselor in a rural area for at least two years following graduation. Scholarship recipients can receive up to $3,000.

Jd Vs Llb Law Degree

The law degrees JD and LLB have similarities and differences. They are awarded primarily based on the country standard where the degree is earned, and are both considered a first-level law degree.

Definition

The JD is a Juris Doctor, and the LLB is a Bachelor of Laws. A JD degree is required in most states to gain entrance to the bar.

History

The LLB is based on English "common law." Until the mid-1960s, it was the benchmark law degree for all common law countries, including the U.S. Later, U.S. law schools changed the standard to the JD.

Significance

Unlike the bachelor-level LLB, the JD is a post-graduate, three-year professional degree in law. In addition to being the standard degree to practice law in the U.S., it is becoming more customary in Canada, Hong Kong, Australia and elsewhere.

Curriculum Similarities

While each degree's curricula focus on the practice of law, the LLB is more academic in nature. The recipient may require further accreditation before entering practice, depending on the country. This may not apply in countries where the LLB is earned as a post-graduate degree. In such cases, the LLB and JD may be treated equally.

Misconceptions

While the JD degree is technically a doctor's degree, recipients are not addressed as "Dr." That is reserved for a more advanced law degree--for example, Doctor of Juridical Science, or J.S.D.

Uncf Scholarships & Grants

The United Negro College Fund is the nation's largest minority education organization. It provides operating funds for 39 member historically black colleges and universities and provides scholarship opportunities and internships for students at 900 institutions. The UNCF administers and supports scholarships for thousands of students. Since its inception, UNCF has raised more than $3.2 billion and has helped more than 350,000 students pay for a college education. UNCF supports many different scholarship efforts, including some backed by private foundations and corporations.

UNCF General Scholarship

The UNCF recommends that students applying for any of its scholarships apply also for the UNCF General Scholarship. This annual scholarship provides up to $5,000 for undergraduate and graduate college students. The scholarship requires an application to be completed. The applications are available from the UNCF website and from many university and college financial aid departments. Students must have a minimum 2.50 GPA to qualify for the scholarships. For new college students, the GPA requirement is for high school. For students who have already completed one or more college semesters, the GPA requirement is for cumulative collegiate coursework. The scholarship is applicable only to students who are attending one of the UNCF-eligible institutions. There are 39 different UNCF-eligible institutions. Many are historically black colleges.

Gates Millennium Scholars

The Gates Millennium Scholars program is funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The foundation's goal is to increase the number of African-American, American Indian, Asian and Hispanic students enrolling in and completing undergraduate and graduate degrees. The foundation awards 1,000 scholarships annually. The scholarships are awarded on basis of need, and actual award amounts vary based on family income, tuition cost and other expenses.

Corporate Scholarships

Many corporations offer scholarships through the UNCF, which administers the scholarships. Corporate-supported scholarships are available from Aldi Foods, AT&T, Frito Lay, Hershey Company, T-Mobile, Oracle and Toyota. Eligibility and award amounts vary. The Toyota UNCF Scholarship awards up to $7,500 to college freshmen who had a 3.0 or higher high school GPA. Only students attending one of six colleges are eligible for the scholarships. The Frito Lay Arts Scholarship awards up to $5,000 to college undergraduate students who have a minimum 2.50 GPA and who are majoring in fine arts, graphic arts, art, theater or visual arts. The scholarship is available to students at any four-year college. Two scholarships are awarded annually. One is from Lay's, and the other is from Doritos. The AT&T Foundation Scholarship awards up to $2,500 to undergraduate students with a 3.0 or higher GPA at any two- or four-year college. Only African-American children or stepchildren of AT&T employees qualify. The Aldi UNCF Corporate Scholars Program awards up to $5,000 to college sophomores and juniors with a 3.0 or higher collegiate GPA. Students must agree to intern at Aldi in Valparaiso, Indiana, or Batavia, Illinois.

NAACP Scholarships

The UNCF administers five different scholarship programs funded by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The Earl G. Graves Scholarship Program provides up to a $5,000 scholarship to students of any four-year college who major in business or international business. The Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship awards up to $1,500 to any undergraduate or graduate student at a four-year college who is a current member of the NAACP, shows financial need and has not reached the age of 25 by the application deadline. The Hubertus W.V. Willems scholarship awards male students majoring in chemistry, engineering, math or physics with up to $2,000. The Roy Wilkins Scholarship and the Lillian and Samuel Sutton Scholarship each award $1,000 annually to a student attending a four-year college.

Online courses let students complete their coursework anywhere with an internet connection.

Teaching English online has its own set of challenges. One challenge that all online instructors face is keeping students engaged in a distance environment; students tend to only log in when something is due and ignore the course and the course website in between major assignments. One way to keep students logging in is to require graded discussion assignments and other short activities that require the students to log in every week. The activities must teach the students and engage them in an ongoing discussion if they are going to support the course content and not just serve as "busywork."

Introduction Game

Even though the course is online, the students still need to get to know one another. If students need immediate answers to problems or simply need a classmate to look over their work, they must make connections online with other students. One way to do this is to start a discussion thread that asks students to learn about one another.

The instructor should start the thread by typing ten facts about himself, such as his interests, his hometown or how many pets he has. A student will respond and mention one to three things that she has in common with the instructor, then list her own ten facts. The next student who logs on can comment on that student's list, and list his own, and so on. In this way, students all learn about at least one other student, and finding common ground can help students feel less uneasy about contacting one another with questions.

Finding a Source Game

One concept that is difficult to teach for undergraduates in a research-based English course is finding appropriate sources. Students usually have a great deal of difficulty finding and using sources, and seeing how other students approach finding sources for a research project can be very helpful.

Begin a discussion thread and introduce a topic for a research report. Make the topic interesting and a little bit controversial so the students will be eager to find sources that support their point of view. Have all students respond with an entry similar to an annotated bibliography in which they cite the full source and then explain how it connects with the topic. Then you may critique their choices and discuss the issue of bias.

Proofreading Games

Proofreading and revision are essential skills for any English class, so it is a good idea to remind students that they must take the time to revise their essays. The instructor should start a discussion thread that is a short paragraph about her life or any topic that interests her, and she should introduce four errors in the paragraph. The next student should identify the errors, describe what the errors are and create a paragraph of his own with four errors. The students will not only obtain practice in identifying errors, but having to purposefully introduce errors will force them to learn about specific errors and include them.

Thesis Games

Every English paper has a thesis, whether it is obvious or implied. For a major research paper, the instructor should begin a thread with a paragraph from a research essay and ask the students to find the thesis statement or, if the thesis is implied, state it in her own words. Then the student should assess her own introduction to her research paper and ask the next student to find the thesis. The next student who logs on will have to identify her thesis statement and then include his introduction, and so on. This game can be easily modified for other more advanced online English courses as well; for example, students in a Business Communications course can find the problem statement in each others' introductions for their investigative reports.

Funny Ways To Annoy A Roommate

Roommates can play some annoying gags and still stay good friends.

Practical jokes and humorous annoyances are a rite of passage in the roommate experience. When seeking out a humorous method of annoyance, make sure that you do not limit yourself to any one kind. Use your imagination and if necessary, do some research. Just make sure that the joke does not go too far or become offense to others. Keep in the mind the kind of humor to which your roommate will respond and keep it safe as nothing kills a good joke like someone getting hurt.

Be a Mime for the Day

When in doubt, practice the art of miming. Constantly try to get out of the invisible box and request help with hand gestures and sad faces. When the roommate speaks, copy all body language and gestures made. When asked a question, always strike a long, thinking pose and respond with a shrug of the shoulders or try to answer as if it were charades. Another option to annoy any roommate is to pretend to be reading an invisible book and when the roommate comments, give an annoyed look and press a finger against the lips to signify to be quiet.

Annoy With Objects

Announce excitedly, days in advance, about a special item that will be added to the dresser. After a couple days announce with pride the display of 13 multi-colored toothbrushes and then refuse to talk about them. An additional method of annoying with objects is to place all the books with the spine facing the wall and then constantly complain how difficult it is to find a book. When the roommate suggests correcting the books, pause for a moment as if in thought and then dismiss his suggestion.

Annoy With Actions

When the room can afford a little mess, consider annoying with eggs. Boil some eggs and place them in a bowl with one raw egg still in its shell. Start eating the hard-boiled egg and thoughtfully ask the roommate if he wants one too. After the unknowing victim has thankfully agreed, give him the raw egg and watch him crack it open. Alternatively, start the morning with confusion by switching cereals. Take the plastic bag full of cereal from within the cardboard cereal box and switch it with another. When the roommate goes to make their preferred breakfast, they will be stunned and confused.

The Almighty Television

To annoy a roommate who is constantly glued to the television, cover up the sensor on the remote or on the cable box with a black piece of tape. Make the piece of tape inconspicuous by cutting it to the same size as the dark sensor area. Turn on the television set to a low volume and leave the remote out for the roommate. He will sit back to watch and be unable to change the channel or adjust the volume. If the roommate is already watching television, wait until he leaves the room for a moment, set the channel to a static channel and hide the remote.

Organizations provide grants, scholarships, and fellowships for women pursuing full-time studies in technology-related fields such as computer science, engineering, and mathematics. Grants range from $1,000 to $18,000, and are designed to support the advancement of women in fields where they are traditionally under-represented. American Association of University Women: Selected Professions Fellowships

The American Association of University Women Selected Professions Fellowships offer funding for women pursuing full-time graduate studies in architecture, computer science, engineering and mathematics. Fellowships for minority women pursuing studies in business administration, law and medicine are also available. Awards range from $5,000 to $18,000. The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship

The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship provides a $10,000 award for women pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in technology. Eligible applicants must provide proof of enrollment in full-time studies in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field; and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 out of 4.0, or 4.5 out of 5.0. Applicants must submit their application online and provide their resume, essay response, academic transcripts, and references. Scholarship finalists are provided with a trip to Mountain View, California to attend the annual Google Scholars Retreat. Applications are due by Feb. 6, of each calendar year.

Microsoft Research: Graduate Women's Scholarship Program

The Microsoft Graduate Women's Scholarship Program is designed to support female graduate students pursuing Ph.D. studies in a technology-related field. The one-year $15,000 award includes $2,000 for conference travel. Eligible applicants must provide proof of enrollment in full-time studies at a U.S. academic institution in the program areas of electrical engineering, computer science, or mathematics; and have completed less than one-year of study. Applicants must receive nomination from their academic institution; individual applications from candidates are not accepted. Application packages must include a candidates curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, and letters of reference. Applications are due by Feb. 11 of each calendar year.

The Society of Women Engineers

The Society of Women Engineers provides scholarships of up to $10,000 for women pursuing full-time baccalaureate or graduate studies in the field of computer science, engineering, or engineering technology programs. Students must attend an accredited academic institution and provide proof of enrollment in full-time studies. Applications are due by Feb. 15 of each calendar year.

Your first step in obtaining a scholarship for college is to find the scholarship. The search may seem a bit detailed, but in the end it may be worth it if you can receive a nice chunk of school paid for.

Instructions

1. Talk to your guidance counselor if you are in high school and are looking for scholarships solely for African Americans. Your guidance counselor is trained to know much about all types of college scholarships and can point you in the direction of all scholarships available to a black student whether you are male or female. If your guidance counselor can't assist you in finding scholarships for African Americans, then request that he give you the name or number of someone who can.

2. Visit the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) (see Resources below) or give them a call using the contact information on their website. The United Negro College Fund plays a big role in helping African Americans go to college with assistance; each year 65,000 African Americans are able to go to college thanks to this fund. The UNCF provides scholarships for African American students as well as partners with 39 colleges to provide tuition at less than half the cost of other private colleges. 3. Contact local and state colleges in your area by giving them a call or sending an email. A simple phone call or email inquiring about what scholarships the school offers directly to African American students may be all you need to do to get a scholarship for school.

Input information about yourself as to whether you are a high school student, a college student or a grad student, what types of scholarships you are looking for, what your current grade point average is and what your academic and career goals are. Write An Introduction Paragraph To An Essay

Writing an effective introduction paragraph to an essay involves using your words to encourage your audience to continue reading. This is done by explaining what your essay intends to accomplish without explicitly stating your intent or giving away too much information. The "hook" -- the catchy part of the paragraph that makes your audience want to continue -- is the most difficult part of the paragraph to write. Announcing what the essay is about without directly saying "My essay will do this ..." is done more easily.

Instructions

1. Create an outline for the introduction paragraph. The outline should contain information similar to an outline of the entire essay, including the main idea of the essay and two or three supporting ideas. Once you have created the outline, you'll have all the information you need to put into the introductory paragraph except the opening sentence and the closing sentence (which leads into the body of the essay).

2. Write an attractive first sentence that allows for the information in your outline to follow. For example, if you're writing an essay about William Shakespeare's use of gratuitous violence in his tragedies, you could use a reference to gratuitous violence in popular cinema to hook the audience:

Quentin Tarantino's critically-acclaimed film "Pulp Fiction" (1994) and the "Kill Bill" films use mindless violence to thrill the audience as their shuffled plots invite viewers to piece together the stories, which all but declare Tarantino's fanaticism for William Shakespeare's revenge tragedies that use similar storytelling methods.

3. Write the body of the introduction paragraph as a preview of the essay. Here you'll include information that emphasizes your stance as stated in your main idea.

Using the Quentin Tarantino example, you'll continue the paragraph:

Evidence of mindless violence and plot make-up patterned after "Hamlet" and "Titus Andronicus" appear in many of Tarantino's films, but perhaps it's most apparent in the aforementioned films, indicating that Tarantino has studied the components of Shakespeare's revenge tragedies extensively and modeled what he has found to suit his audience.

4. Close the deal and open the door for the essay. You want to end the introduction paragraph with a conclusion that provides an entrance into the first paragraph of the body of the essay. At this point, you have told your audience what your essay is about and given a hint of what brought you to your thesis. Now, you have to lead your audience into the meat of the essay.

Here's your finished sample introduction paragraph:

Quentin Tarantino's critically-acclaimed film "Pulp Fiction" (1994) and the "Kill Bill" films use mindless violence to thrill the audience as their shuffled plots invite viewers to piece together the stories, which all but declare Tarantino's fanaticism for William Shakespeare's revenge tragedies that use similar storytelling methods. Start A First Robotics Competition Team

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, or FIRST, is an organization founded by inventor Dean Kamen, who is renowned for inventions as varied as portable dialysis machines to the Segway Human Transporter. FIRST Robotics Competitions bring together teams of high school students and their coaches to go head to head in robotics competitions.

Instructions

1. Determine if you have enough students interested in participating in a FIRST Robotics Competition team. Teams usually have about 25 students but there is no maximum number of students who can participate in a team.

2. Find coaches. FIRST Robotics Teams tend to be large, so at least two coaches, and sometimes more, are recommended. Coaches can learn about what is involved in coaching a FIRST Robotics Team by downloading the coaches guide at the U.S. FIRST website.

3. Solicit sponsors. Starting a FIRST Robotics Team is expensive. As in $6,000 just to get off the ground. Aside from the registration fee and robotics kit, you need to pay registration entrance fees to participate in the competitions, and that can cost as much as another $10,000. You can help defray the costs by getting one or more local businesses to sponsor your team.

4. Register your FIRST Robotics Team, and buy your robotics parts kit via U.S. FIRST's TIMS registration management tool. If you need assistance to complete your registration, you can submit a question to U.S. FIRST directly from the TIMS registration page.

5. Submit any additional paperwork required by U.S. FIRST, such as a W-9, before the close of the registration period. The specific registration period dates vary from year to year, so check the U.S. FIRST website.

6. Plan your team meetings to mesh with the FIRST Robotics Competition schedule. Following the registration period, which runs from October through December, the robot building occurs in January and February, and competitions occur in February and throughout the spring.

7. Build your robot, attend competitions, and enjoy the sense of discovery and appreciation for engineering and technology team members develop by participating in the FIRST Robotics Competition process.

2. Next, to prepare to memorize vocabulary words, you will need to create a flash card, using 3 x 5 index cards, for each vocabulary word and definition. On the front of the index card write the word and on the back, write the definition. After making the index card, you will need to grab one 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper per every word you need to memorize.

3. You are now fully prepared to memorize vocabulary words to ace a test, so it is time to start committing the words to memory. First, you need to write down each vocabulary word and the definition ten times on an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper. Do your first word ten times, then the next word ten times, and continue until you make it through your entire list. By writing the words and definitions repetitively, at least ten times each, you are unknowingly committing the words to memory.

4. Next, to memorize vocabulary words, pull out the 8.5 x 11 sheet that you folded in half from Step 1. In this exercise, you will cover up the definitions on the right half so you cannot see them. Say the first word aloud and say the definition aloud. Now slide down your cover sheet to see if you got it correct. If you did not get it correct, cover it back up and try again. When you get the first word correct, now you must get the first two vocabulary words correct in a row. Say word one and the definition aloud, slide down the cover sheet to make sure it is correct, then say word two and the definition aloud. Slide down your cover sheet to make sure it is correct as well. Each time you get a vocabulary word definition incorrect, you have to go back to the start until you get to the point where you correctly state the entire list of words and definitions in a row. At this point, you will have mastered your vocabulary words.

5. As a final test to memorize vocabulary words, get a study partner and have them show you a word and then you provide them with the definition that should be on the back of the card. Again, you should be able to do this without a problem by now since you have mastered your vocabulary words. You need to get through your entire stack of flash cards without making an error. If you make an error, have your partner gather up all of the cards and start again. This may seem obsessive, but it will get you that A on your next test that you need. Get a good night's rest and best of luck on your test!

The Ohio School Board website notes there are no official emancipation court proceedings, but instead emancipation is a common law doctrine. 1. Getting married is one way to become an emancipated minor in Ohio. 2. Join the military, and in Ohio you are considered emancipated from your parents. Similar certifications provided by this association include substance abuse professional certifications, associate addictions professional certifications, recovery support specialist certifications and a certificate for board registered medication-assisted addiction treatment professionals. Students interested in any of these certifications must attend a IAODAPCA training session, which are offered in locations across the state.

NCC

The National Certification Commission (NCC) offers several substance abuse certifications. They include levels one and two national certified addiction counseling, master addiction counseling, substance abuse professional certification for the Department of Transportation, and a certificate in spiritual care giving to help addicted people and their families. These certificate programs are only open to licensed substance abuse counselors. Certification candidates must show examination proficiency in admitting procedures, treatment planning, counseling, case management and discharge. Teach New Vocabulary Words

Vocabulary words are important because a large vocabulary increases a student's ability to express himself and understand others using language, both written and spoken. The key to teaching vocabulary is to use a variety of different methods and constantly reinforce it through activities, games and other applications. According to the Cobb County, Georgia education system's website, students need to encounter a word at least 15 times to really understand it. You can create these encounters using a variety of methods and activities.

Instructions

1. Explain the vocabulary word's definition and meaning to the class as a whole. Write the word on the board, ask students what they think the meaning is, then explain the definition. Use pictures and examples of the word in a sentence.

2. Distribute worksheets that have the vocabulary word in the middle with four "spokes." Each spoke can have a different activity for the vocabulary word -- an antonym, a synonym, a picture of the word. Let the students fill them out independently in order to practice applying their new vocabulary word.

3. Quiz students with flash cards. One side of the card can have the word, while the other should have a short definition, synonym, antonym or picture. For example, write "debonair" on one side, and "sophisticated and charming" on the other.

4. Create your own word searches and crossword puzzles on a regular basis to reinforce old vocabulary words. Have students take them home to work on alone sometimes and do them together in small groups other times.

5. Drill students with analogies to have students practice applying vocabulary words in relation to one another. For example, say "truck is to big as moped is to ___," expecting the answer "small."

6. Mix these strategies up on a daily basis, always making sure students are routinely exposed to both old and new words. This will ensure that children get the repetitive exposure they need.

Western Governor's University offers a variety of scholarships to online students. The "Go Further" With WGU Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate or graduate-level re-entry students. The WGU Mathematics and Science Educators Scholarships is available to students seeking a career as a science or math teacher. Kaplan University Scholarships

Kaplan University makes several scholarships available to students seeking online degrees. In 2011, the Kaplan University Success Scholarship awards up to $200 per semester for a total not to exceed $3,000. To be eligible, an applicant must be a first-time undergraduate student with a cumulative college GPA of 2.75 or better. The Kaplan University Accelerated Scholars Award can be used to save 25 percent off of the tuition cost for a five or six credit class; to be eligible, a student must take at least 15 credits per semester and must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0.

University of Phoenix Scholarships

The University of Phoenix offers a variety of scholarships to its students. Ten full-tuition ALPFA Professional Leadership Scholarships are awarded to deserving online students each year. Six full-tuition FBINAA Scholarships are also awarded each year. Fifty AMVETS Scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing bachelor's and master's degrees online. SuperSibs! is a college scholarship geared for high school or college siblings of cancer patients. Since cancer affects the entire family and the siblings of the cancer patient, this scholarship recognizes that they deserve a scholarship to assist with their goals of a college education. This scholarship offers $5000 per year.

Asthma and Allergies

The Schering-Plough Corporation sponsors a scholarship called the Will to Win. This corporation provides two $5000 scholarships for each of the five categories of competition, which include athletics, student government, visual arts, performing arts and community service. The students must have a 3.5 GPA and have received an award in the field that they are applying in.

Convinced you are going to go broke paying for your college education? If you're a college sophomore or junior working toward a degree in science or mathematics, a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship could provide you with up to $7,500 annually for tuition, fees, books, room and board, if you qualify.

Instructions

1. Make certain you qualify. You must be either a full-time sophomore or junior pursuing an undergraduate degree at an accredited college or university; have a GPA of at least a "B"; be in the upper 25% of your class; and be either a U.S. citizen, a resident alien or a U.S. national.

2. Find out who the Goldwater Scholarship Faculty representative is on your campus and express your interest in being nominated for the scholarship. You can usually find this out from your institution's scholarship office or by contacting the Goldwater Foundation through their Web site (act.org/goldwater) or by calling them at (703) 756-6012.

3. Start on your application early. Faculty representatives typically receive nomination forms and related materials in late August and the completed application and materials must be received by the Goldwater Foundation by February 1 of the following year.

4. Talk with present and former teachers, teaching assistants and even employers about letters of recommendation, which must be completed according to the Foundation's standards and must be presented on official forms to be considered as part of your application.

5. Consider your essay of approximately 600 words. The essay should relate to current and future plans regarding your studies and prospective career.

6. Get together all peripheral materials that must be sent with the application. Nominees must provide official copies of all high school and college transcripts, including the most current semester, if available.

7. Consult your faculty representative about students who have previously received a Goldwater Scholarship. Talk with these previous award winners about their insight into the application process and see if they have any helpful tips.

8. Keep in mind that research experience, and demonstrating your interest in pursuing an advanced degree in mathematics, the natural sciences and some engineering fields, will help to make you a stronger candidate.
